You can delete the custom IDs by creating a custom query listing all individuals, adding a column for Custom ID. (The expression is %INDI.REFN%). You should be able to use the 'View Report' option in conjunction with the 'Display Graphically' option to help you follow the line of connection.   The report sets out the connection between two people one step at a time.
