Re: Source Record Title confusion
To bring this back to BEJ's needs, it would be useful to know why they felt they had to introduce Short Title for Templated Sources. Then we can suggest what could be changed (if anything)/how much work would be involved. I think it's because BEJ started using Short Titles with generic sources but ...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
So yes, a templated source can have a Short Title just as a generic source can, but I'm suggesting that for many people, that's impractical and therefore "irrelevant" to the discussion. It may be impractical and (for some people) unnecessary but this whole discussion started because BEJ has added S...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
Perhaps strangely I thought you and I regarded the two titles in the same manner. The Short Title is an abbreviated, potentially reordered version of the main Title, used to navigate the lists. Yes, we do agree on that. I just don’t think of the abbreviated version of the Title as being the ‘name’ ...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
Well I have never found it confusing in the past, but I am confused by Adrian’s/Mike’s summary! I have never thought of the (generic) Short Title as “the name given to the source record in FH”. I have always thought of the full Title as the name of the record and the Short title as simply as an abbr...

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.12 (February 2023)
Like Teresa, I now sometimes see a blank where the tree should appear. It happens after using the tree when recording data from one census and then switching to a different census year but selecting the same person as the tree root. If a different person is selected the tree displays correctly.

The tree display is a great idea. It meets a need that I didn't know I had.

Re: Source Record Title confusion
Using Templated Sources .... the Record Title (IIRC) isn't included in reports. That's why I'd be interested to know what the OP is using Short Titles for. I wondered if it was for reports but, as you say, the templated source record Title isn't used in reports. At least, it's not used by default -...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
Whist many people don’t use Short Titles I think we’re agreed that IF they are used the benefit is that they provide a concise display and sorting aid in the Records window. But the OP apparently doesn’t want them to be used in the Records window (and the solution is to change the option in Tools>Pr...

OK fair enough, that's why I said "I'm not sure what you mean", because your statement, as written, is somewhat misleading to say the least!

Re: Superfluous citations (revisited)
However, the Report Sources section no longer includes Source Notes I'm not sure what you mean by that Mike. The Source Notes are not included by default, but in the Report Options, Sources tab, there are options to Append from Source Record (or Append from Citation) the Text from Source and/or Not...

Re: Media display in diagrams
You need to set the 'frame' link in FH. On the Media tab of the individual's Property box, select the image in question and then click the Edit button in the toolbar below the list of media items. Then in the Edit Media Item dialogue use the Link to Face option to draw the frame. Alternatively, sele...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
I configure Record Title to serve the same purposes (minimise column width, using a convention to enable quick searching). I guess it depends how and where you want to use the (long) Record Title. My short titles would be a bit too concise for my liking in reports so I prefer a slightly more descri...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
Are there any real advantages to doing so? I only use generic sources but I find the short title very useful. 1. It takes up less column width in the Records window (and in the 'Sources for' pane attached to the Property box) than the full title so it can all be seen without adjusting column positi...

Re: Source Record Title confusion
Attached is a screenshot of my sources showing three created from Source Templates. Each has both a Short Title and a Title. Sorry to jump in, but the display in the Records window is determined by Tools > Preferences > Records Window > Use Short title for Source record names if available . I think...

It's the file name which will be important. Make sure you give each copy of the file a different name before you try to link it to FH.

Re: Adding media changes in v7.0.17
Why would you make multiple identical copies of the same census media file ? I think David means that if a single census page contains two or more households of interest he keeps two or more copies of the image of that page and links each to a separate media record in FH, one for each household. (T...

Re: de facto etc parental relationships...
Interesting - I admit that I treat both formal and informal adoptions the same, with just a comment in the adoption event to say something along the lines of "At this stage in the UK, all adoptions were informal". Interesting - I made a decision some time ago that I would NOT treat formal and infor...

Re: Unknown Relations
I agree with Trevor on this -- if I don't know somebody's name, I'll leave it blank. That's what the OP has previously been doing, but his problem is that all the [unamed person] records are sorted at the top in the Records Window (in ascending order sort) and he wants a way to move them to the bot...

It's a very long time since I used V3 so I can't remember much about it I'm afraid. Are you saying that when you actually have a report open the report options are still inactive? Have you been able to access the report options in the past? Try searching for "Report Options" in the Help files in V3....

In Tools > Fact Types select the fact and click Edit. Then click the Advanced... button at the bottom of the Fact Definiton window. You can then choose your own format for the Summary Template in the Facts tab listing and/or the override Template for the Records Window Listings.

Re: Documents of Fact vs Event Facts
If someone were to write an article in a newspaper about me, it would certainly be an Event in my life! Yes, but what would have triggered them to write the article? There would have been some reason. Did you win a prize? Were you involved in a traffic accident? Have you just had a book published? ...

Re: Documents of Fact vs Event Facts
How do I undo the few hundred or so records that need to be altered. I know that all the citations attached to the Events are written and applied per FH specification, so I only need to change the events they are applied to. From what you have said it sounds as if you have used custom facts such as...
