custom query/ diagram to identify cousins
I still haven't really worked out how to correctly do custom reports, and now whenever I press help it says that Vista doesn't support the help function as something is too old to be supported! Therefore I hope someone here can tell me how to do this. What I'm trying to do is identify all first cous...

Thank you to both of you, I think both of these are interesting leads! Looks like a few more hours/ days down at TNA for me... The Foreign Office and their various branches have full staff lists and staff handbooks going way back which could prove very interesting, now if only I could find the TNA r...

Political Agent
I would like to pick your brains please! One of my relatives (who died in 1921) was a photographer but on his daughter's marriage certificate in 1922 she claims he was a political agent. I have no idea about where that came from and how to go about searching it (everywhere else he is just a photogra...

Finding A Death
But freeBMD isn't fully transcribed yet! If your Charles Bartum lived for a relatively normal lifespan (so died between say 1945-1969) then those aren't transcribed. Mostly, if I don't have any family hints then I haven't been able to find dates of death. A chance is to try to find the tombstone, so...

married at 15?
I also have a marriage at 15 in my tree, at first it confused me, esp being in 1927, but exceptions to the rule are part of someone's family tree! I'm sometimes just think that at my age (going on 30) I would've had several children and be well past the 7 year itch if I'd lived 100 years ago, going ...

I've obtained and taken photos of churches then and now and would love to be able to attach them automatically to a person if their relevant B/M/D corresponded!

Do you know the likely area where Pirdie was born? Have you found the parents in the 1901 census?

age 15 at marriage?
Hi there, I'm hoping someone can put me in the right direction. I'm sure I've seen a discussion on here before saying that it was actually only sometime in the last century that the law changed and that you can now only get married at 16. I have someone who I think was born 1912 and married in 1927,...

Thanks, that is very interesting to know he might not be British- makes me even more confused now! Think I will post this pic up on the Great War forum too and see what they make of it. Paula

I have found out now that the uniform signifies that he was part of the Royal Flying Corps, and though I didn't realise this, regiment numbers are stamped on the back of the bar of the medal (though mine is illegible!). Thanks for everyone's help. Paula

Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone can point me in the direction of somewhere where I can look at uniforms of different types of soldiers/ different regiments/ styles of uniform, etc, so that I can find out more about the people who are pictured here. http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/Walter_...

Establishing a birth
If the child was born in or after 1912 then you can search births registered on ancestry.co.uk where you input just the name of the father and then put the maiden name of the mother in the corresponding box below. Sometimes be imaginative with spellings or use * as necessary. I have found some unexp...

I think I am being particularly thick, but I can't find anywhere to search for a birth in Scotland in 1942. I've looked on Scotland People but that isn't late enough. Help, please! Thanks, Paula

I have put lots of information on my tree about people who married into my family, etc, and have sometimes found that in fact that second cousins lived next door to each other or other distant relatives via marriage ended up marrying each other. It all helps me build up an idea of the communities th...

Mother's name on child's birth certificate
Hi everyone, I have a little question for you. Not the child's name, but the mother's? I ha...

Some references are in the file when opened with Notepad. The birth description field is classed as uncategorised data, the marriage data is completely missing and the death description field (where I put the ref) is classed as the cause of death. Hi, I've had the worst sinking feeling this evening- after updating my records with the BMD references on ancestry and now downloading the whole lot to FH, I've found I can't find the field where I saved the references to. When I'm on ancestry I don't seem to be able to attach a birth, marriage or d...
