See this post for the reason for the message and a possible, though awkward, way round it. http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=v3usage&op=display&num=3529 Just to add to my previous posting - if you have viewed an image and want to change its type you will need to close FH an...

Gedcom and line length
The standard line length in Gedcom is 255 characters of which some are used for the tag level and tag ID and line terminators leaving typically around 240 characters for actual data. Since FH sticks the standard very strictly I doubt that it will be changed to support different line lengths. I would...

Running V4 on a Netbook
Since the problem is to do with diagrams I would suspect that the graphics capabilities of your netbook is the cause of your problem. The other thing that affects the diagrams in FH is which printer drivers are installed. I think that FH cannot display diagrams if no printer is installed though I th...

Edit Multimedia Key words
As is usually the case where FH fails in providing a feature, and editing and managing keywords should have the same functionality as editing and managing place names, you can always edit the Gedcom file directly. Use PSPad, NotePad+, or even Microsoft Word (at a push) and search for the keyword in ...

File format not recognised
To check if your file is corrupted, open it in Notepad and check the first few lines. To do this go to your Gedcom file using Explorer and right click on the name. From the pop-up menu select Open With and then select Choose Program... In the list that is shown under Other Programs you should find N...

oldtimer47 said: Related to this - is there a risk of making the Gedcom file harder to understand by using custom facts ? Not really. Gedcom files aren't designed to be normally read by a human. The format was designed to be human readable to allow small files to be created manually as access to ge...

If the property window has been accidentally placed off screen, then to get it back after clicking on the float button do the following 1) Press ALT-Space (Press and hold the ALT key and then whilst holding it down press the SPACE key) 2) A little menu should appear with options such as 'Move', 'Siz...

Regex for one would be very useful, but just a basic AND/OR structure would be just as useful. Currently typing a search phrase means that all records containing the phrase's words would be found, even if they are not consecutive nor all exist in the record. Records also containing superset words ar...

A question (*not* a request)
Items for the wish list don't need a vetting before being included. However discussions to clarify the item and suggest alternatives and/or work arounds do happen. Some items on the list are nearly impossible to implement or are very esoteric or specific to a single user. That hasn't stopped previou...

_NOTEs in multimedia records
If FH makes such a great song and dance about being 100% Gedcom 5.5 compatible that if it does not support BLOBs in multimedia records then it is breaking the trade description act as it's compatibility is only 99% at best. I think that 100% Gedcom compatibility should be recognised as a non starter...

Can I join in with all this agreeing? [wink] Chris has hit the nail on the head with regards FH's usability. Synching of Media folder
Sarah, I think the problem with FH's find file dialog not working is because it doesn't keep track of it's own current directory. So when you try and find your Media/xxx.jpg file Windows has a problem because FH has not set the directory to start from. Therefore Windows uses the last directory used ...

Sarah, you're not out-voted. I too agree that having all types of records flagable and listable and keywordable would be a nice thing to have. I have already put in a request for a similar feature, though mine wa a request to allow all types of records to be flagged. See #371 'Allow Flags on all rec...

How to link source citation to external website
I would consider the GRO to be the main 'source' of the information, whilst Ancestry, FindMyPast, et al are transcribers. And like any transcriber, the act of transcription can produce errors which is why Ancestry and FMP can show different data for the same source.

Private Notes - a question and a cautionary tale
I agree. I consider this lack of full support for private notes to be a major bug. It should be one of the things fixed in the new minor version which should be issued within weeks if not months and not years. I know I do go on about the lack of consistency in FH, but I'm afraid this just shows why ...

Does FH just show a cross against the thumbnails which you are losing? I seem to remember something about FH caching (basically building a temporary list in memory) the photos. I don't see the fact that the method I suggested has a disadvantage with loads of source records. The number of source records is beside the point.
