Grave headstones as a source
Both primary and secondary. It depends on what information you are extracting from the memorial inscription and your point of view. The DoB is secondary, and the DoD is likely to be primary, though it could be said that it is secondary and the cemetery record or death certificate is the primary. All...

Ancestral Sources
Depends on how much you've got to do and how urgently you want to do them by and how long it will be before AS is ready for general use (weeks more likely than months*). If you've never used GC, then even starting now would be useful in the sense of getting you used to the concepts about how/what to...

Remember last record on startup ?
One other way is to use the 'Last updated ....' standard queries. This works so long as you have actually been doing some changes to the records. If you've just been viewing then this doesn't work.

Finding a specific individual
There are a number of ways in which you can find people. The main thing is to organise them first. FH is limited on free searching. It helps to organise your data first and then use the facilities that FH does have. 1) Sort the records in the record window. Then you can find all the people in one fa...

Question about reports
Sorry Bilko, your response comes across very badly compared to RandyP's. RandyP's message is probably not the most polite and well presented question and it might be a bit abrupt but it is not discourteous to anyone as he has also included a smiley to be a bit self-effacing (sp?). Unless someone kno...

I assume that you are wanting more control over the date format when using =FormateDate() than currently available with the modifiers such as :LONG, :COMPACT, :ABBREV3 etc

Word Documents and FH Reports
Doesn't always work as the point about using word is usually because 'I also have Microsoft Word documents containing stories and images'. You then come against the problem that FH's notes don't support formatting or any other textual enhancements.

Customise sentence in report?
If you are thinking about using an expression/function to affect the format of the sentence when it's used in reports then it looks like you are out of luck. There are a couple of wish list items for it http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldisplay.php?wlwlref=357 http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldispl...

Could be a bug in FH. Send the details to Calico Pie at support@family-historian.co.uk
On a related note, there is a wish list item to stop the printing of blank pages - http://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldispl ... wlwlref=76

Output of notes in CSV files
No, that's a useless function. The whole point about notes is to keep free format text. You will never know ahead of time how many paragraphs are in each note. And if I put paragraphs into separate columns, I could end up with tens of extra columns for large notes. No, fixing the CSV export to allow...

FactValue and Residences
That works if you are sticking with just residences. If you are doing a query with facts in general, then you will be handling residences as well as other types of facts so it would be better for the output to be consistent across the different facts.

Don't forget the point about exporting is to be able to strip private and other data out that another researcher doesn't need. If the other researcher is yourself then exporting is not necessary!

FactValue and Residences
Good idea, but is the sentence format any use at all. If not any use at all, just adding extra complexity with another option doesn't solve much. To be honest, does anything depend that much on the sentence structure which is not solved by a simplified output of just the residence place which would ...

You might have repositories not linked to any individuals. See the 'Exclude all records which are not linked to the selected Individual records' checkbox in the 'Export Gedcom File' window.

Output of notes in CSV files
A request for FH to output a full note in CSV files, including newlines. Currently if a note contains paragraphs, only the first paragraph is output. Ellipses are output to indicate the missing bits of the note. It would be a nice thing if the full note could be output. CSV files can have newlines e...

FactValue and Residences
Just checking with people's views about =FactValue() in queries. For most attributes, it just returns the value, however for residences it makes up a sentence. Eg. Occupation returns just the occupation whilst Residence returns 'Resided in x,y,z date' where x,y,z is the place. To be useful in querie...

Changing the name of a customised tab - how to?
The names of the files will not give any clue as to tab names. The names of the files are related to the type of record, ie. INDI for individual, FAM for families, etc. To view your custom tab details you need to use Notepad to view/edit the contents of the file. Under XP, it's in the Accessories pr...

Multiple Birth Entries
I use both multiple birth entries and single entries depending on whether it's not clear which is the correct date or if there is a wide discrepancy between the dates. For example, 22Apr1864 or 25Apr1864 - either could be right and the difference is probably due to a transcription error in which cas...

Maximum ahnentafel value
Tim's right it sounds like FH is using a signed integer since that is the default type in C, rather than excplitily defining it as an unsigned integer. Any way it only gives an extra generation so either way it's a reasonable limitation to reach. I have gone back about 10 generations and that I thin...
