Suggestion for improvement - batching census
I use Gedcom Census on my 9Mb, 18000 person database and I find it frustrating having to wait nearly 40 seconds (1Gb RAM, 2Ghz Pentium, 160Gb HD) for GC to save the file after a census entry and re-load it before I can then work on the next task. Since I do a batch of censuses (censi?) at a time, th...

If your relative needs help to use FTM to produce a Gedcom, point them at this page where there are instructions on how to do it.

That's because there is a difference between standard diagrams. They are not all created equal! :-) The standard diagrams accessed via the toolbar buttons or in the first section of the View->Standard Diagrams menu are different from the rest. The former seem have their own settings in the registry ...

A tool to put narrative text in notes
Agreed. Gedcom is a nice standard but it's the lowest common denominator for sharing information between researchers. And since FH is one of the only few programs to follow the spec properly, it's not much good for all the other programs/systems that don't. Using the lowest common denominator approa...

Diagram to follow entry of new individuals
Firstly, yes I add with the property dialog window. I find adding by dragging off the selected person extremely awkward as it requires me to move my hand from the keyboard to the mouse and back again. I'm already doing that too much through FH's lack of good keyboard support. One thing that many UI ...

Diagram to follow entry of new individuals
When entering new individuals through the indvidiual property window it would be nice if the diagram repositioned itself so that the newly entered person is always visible. Especially useful when entering large families and the children disappear off the side of the screen. This feature would be nic...

Others have said how to enter the sources, but I would want to know why the sources data could not be transfered from Generations to FH. Is it possible to see a extract from the Gedcom file that Generations produced. It might then be possible to perform some textual trickery on it in Notepad or Word...

Place levels in FH
I've seen the extra commas method being used in other databases. I myself don't bother and just ensure that I keep a full place including country all the time. I consider an address to be a physical building or exact location. Anything which is a hamlet or larger gets put in the place field. I alway...

Is this an unusual cause of death?
I don't know about how common it was to record Acute Alcoholism as a cause of death, but I have come across it in my researches too. It probably encompases liver failure and all other problems caused by excessive drinking. The 7 days I think indicates how long she was ill for before she died.

Unrecognized date format from GEDCOM import
FH can understand the format - well it depends on which version the feature was put into, I'm using 3.1.2 The solution is to go to Tools->Preferences->File/Load Save. One of the options is the numeric date format to recognise. yyyy/mm/dd is one of them. When you load the file FH will then understand...

Copy and paste between two copies of FH
It would be nice to be able to copy and paste records (and fields) between two running copies of FH. Rather than go through all the hassle and complexity of using the split tree helper function (STHF) and then importing for a few records it would be simpler and quicker to select the records in quest...

Surname Spelling
If I come across two different surname spellings (happens with Axtell spelled as Axtel, Axcel etc.) I use the birth name as the primary surname which I gather is the common method. I also do this when the given names change over time (or when middle names are used as first names). I put the down oth...

Age on death / burial
I would have thought that an age at burial is a nonsensical fact. Age is a term used to indicate number of years a person is when alive, when dead age doesn't mean anything.
Either FH should omit references to age on the burial event or do as you say and stop the clock at death.

The context menu key is the key between the right Windows key and the right Ctrl key and acts like a right click on the mouse (without having to use the mouse!). Merging Ability to edit records during process
The merge facility is very good but there are times when you might want a bit of a field in one Gedcom and a bit of a field in another. Currently you have to discard one, retain the other and remember to go back to the record and make the change manually after the merge. For instance one record has ...

The problem is that there is a blank column in the table to inset the list of children. This has to be deleted or it's width modified. The solution is to load the .RTF file in a text editor like Notepad or Write and do a search and replace on a particular string of characters. This allows the width ...

Custom Queries with an And
I think (if I understand your question) what you need is an 'exclude unless' condition to include the flag. What the exclude is doing is throwing away all the records in the result set except those that have the flag set. Add if %INDI.NAME:SURNAME% matches 'smith' Exclude unless %INDI._FLGS.__1851Ce...

I know it's a competing program to FH, but PAF from the Latter Day Saints is free and can display a Gedcom file. It's diagraming is very basic so it depends on the recipient's knowledge of genealogy as to what use they get out of it.
