rclrocco said: My hope for Version 4 when it arrives is that it features some kind of three generation display as you're entering data. If that happens, I think I would be a complete convert!! And, it is my normal practice to enter dates 'Dec 3, 2008 rather than all digits. A...

Merging Databases: Keeping Original IDs

Unless you know for sure that your original ID numbers in each database were not duplicated then it would be nigh on impossible to use your old ID numbers. For instance if you had ID #123 in your main database and one of the sub databases also had an ID #123 then keeping old IDs is not possible. If ...

Having a source for the whole record makes sense if you have one and only one source for a person, but as soon as you find other evidence, I find it confusing. That's why I only use the whole record source for the first occurrence of a person. ;-) So if I find a person for the first time on a Censu...

Your chart is useful as a stop gap till FH supports Unicode, but it still doesn't solve the problem with Ascii. Using Ascii means it still depends on which code page you are using as to which character you actually get. So character 128 in your table is c-cedilla, but in code pages 862 (hebrew), 737...

'For instance, someone on the RootsWeb mailing list pointed out one difficulty with having the Auto-Source adding the Source for ALL fields -- they had things like Gender with the source attached.' Its not only the non-English speaking countries. In these days of easy travelling its not uncommon to have quite a few immigrations and emmigrations in your tree so its quite likely for there to be relatives with names involving umlates (sp?) and so on. UK users will likely have european relatives, ...

Correction: Use the Ctrl key to select two separate records. Using Shift selects all consecutive records between the first selected record and the second. Ctrl allows the selection of individual records.

I'm assuming you're using the Property window's Events tab to add the event. Clicking on the << button brings up a window that only allows the selection of existing family records. One way round this is to create the adoptive family first, then create the adoption event. Alternatively, you need use ...

'The only problem is, it doesn't work if this is the first character in a notes field. The first character it seems must be a printing character.' I've reported this as a serious bug on 21Feb2008 as it can potentially remove user's data. It's also related to the fact that FH will delete parts of not...

The way I manage that is to keep any static files (files that are created outside of FH) in a separate folder. I know it means two separate uploads but I find it easier than remembering to copy in these files into the FH folder, then doing the upload.

I should have added that when it comes to exporting (something which FH lacks*) all programs allow the user to specify the type of export to some degree - Gedcom 5, 5.5.1 or some other format for exchange between identical programs. *YES I do know it's not necessary because the data is already Gedco...

Ian, The official spec (available from familysearch.org in Envoy format) is dated 2 Jan 1995, though I suspect that this is an error and should be 2 Jan 1996 because the document states that it follows the release of a version on 11 Dec 1995. There is no mention of an errata list which is dated the ...

Migrating from Reunion 4 (Not Mac)

If the Reunion is so old (prior to 1997!), could it be that the Gedcom it's exported is V4 and not 5.5? This might cause some problems as FH uses 5.5. You can check by opening the gedcom file in notepad and looking at the first few lines. You should see a couple of lines like these [pre]1 GEDC 2 VER...

Gedcom Census - 1911 (and others) - Suggestions

1) There is a physical description attribute (DSCR). 2) I would think keep it simple and just put the actual occupation in the occupation field. Extra information such as how and why should go in the notes. Something to think of when putting data into attributes/events is how programs uses them in g...

Simon, could I ask why you are sticking so ridgedly with Gedcom 5.5 and not allowing any 5.5.1 support at all. Is it because 5.5.1 is still a 'draft' - 9 years after it was published. I assume you know that the LDS have officially announced that they have stopped all work on Gedcom so the draft will...

Support for OpenOffice formats

Since FH doesn't do anything different for a document or a multimedia file then there is no need for the Insert->Document, Insert->Image, or Insert->Other Multimedia. The only difference is with images where a preview is displayed. Neither is there any need for a filter and so *.* could be used.

Customisation of merge process

It would be nice if there could be some more user control over the merging process. I'm thinking along the lines of being able to change the weights that FH assigns to it's matches, or changing the criteria (e.g. date range for an event to match). Also some changes to to the existing matches such as...

Emailing large diagrams

With such a large diagram I would suggest splitting the diagram up into smaller sections, possibly a seperate diagram for each child of the key ancestor. I doubt anyone of your family would want to see all 700 people. It's just too much to be able to handle mentally.
