Who should be included on a family Tree?
You are entitled to do anything you want. People don't have to be on your direct blood line to be included in your research. The only thing to take into account is living people. It depends on the scope of your project. For instance a One Name Study will include everyone with the same surname whilst...

FH already copes with circular references as notes can contain sources which can contain notes which can contain sources which can contain note...

Calculating dates
A nice website that allows you to calculate dates and time periods is http://www.timeanddate.com . The website has various calculators including ones that allow you to work out a birth or death from a specified date and age, find the length of time between two dates, and calenders so you can check i...

Yes you can but there might be a few issues since there have been some changes in how FH handles Gedcoms. Primarily they are same sex 'marriages', multiple text from source fields in source records, and multimedia filenames. For the same sex issue, when exporting the Gedcom from V4 your relative wil...

The only thing I can think of that could affect the diagram is your printer setting. Try changing that.

Don't forget that V4 uses the project folder and if you've used this feature your Gedcom file will have changed it's location.

Uploading Gedcom files to Ancestry etc
Well I was one who called for the Export functionality to be properly implemented rather than be a long complicated list of instructions which disappear the moment you acknowledge the dialog and therefore you have to write down the instruction if you aren't that familiar with the software. Classic G...

The license name should be the same name you used to order the software. For instance if you order direct from Calico Pie, the name is the name you enter into Kagi's web site.

Media links on census events
In my opinion, certificates and census forms are best attached to the source as that is what the image is of. My method is to create a lots of sources, e.g. rather than one source for 1851 census I will create a separate source for every family's census entry. A birth certificate is a source of info...

To see the focus view of a person selected in the record window the method is to either double click the person and then click the magnifying glass icon in the property box or alternatively select the 'Display in Focus Window' option in the View menu.

If you right click on a source in the source tab of the record window you'll see an option appear labelled 'Add Custom Id'. Brother's Keeper v.6 to FH v.4
I've come across 4 BK v6 files varying in size from 2K to 600K and had minimal problems with them. What I did have problems with was a) the email address in submitter records, b) BK not ensuring that dates follow the Gedcom style (US style dates were intermingled with Gedcom style dates), c) source ...

This is from memory, so if I'm wrong please feel free to contradict me. One thing to note about GR is that even if you use the 'hide living relatives' option living people will still be used in it's hot matching process. So you will get other members contacting you about living people, though when y...

Moving to V4 from V3 - Please read
If you get an exception report when upgrading from v3 to v4 then I have written a program which will fix the issue. You will need to run it on the v3 file before you upgrade it to v4. You can find the program in the Gedcom section of the Downloads area, or go direct with this link - http://www.fhug....

FHTextFix - v3 to v4 TEXT exception report fix
If you get an exception report when you upgrade your v3 FH Gedcom to v4 then you will probably find this little utility useful. In v3, you were allowed to add a number of actual TEXT fields in SOURce records. v4 is more strict in following the Gedcom spec and only allows 1 TEXT field. You might have...

Just a small point to clarify the terms of downloading and uploading.
Using the PC as the origin, downloading is the term used for putting data onto the PC and uploading the term for taking data off the PC and sending it elsewhere.

I've noticed that a couple of changes have been made to how FH handles Gedcoms. I would like these changes to be published so that users are aware of them. Currently users come across these issues and think they are a bug when they are not. Two such changes that I have seen are a) the handling of em...

In terms of testing, I'm surprised this one got through as it appears in the sample data when you use the defaults to generate the website for it. View the family of Peter Munro and Helen Addison (first entry on the index) and the bug appears.
