Re: Installing current FH data onto new computer running Windows 10
Hi Mike, don't give me credit where it's not due :-) My son comes over every now and again and backs up my computer to the external hard drive, I'm sorry to say I don't know what method he uses but think it may be that he copies my project folder to the hardrive. I will ask him for future reference....

Re: Installing current FH data onto new computer running Windows 10
Hi again, Mike, I have now read through the info twice and understand some of it. I have now downloaded the upgrade to V5 to 5.0.11 as instructed on the info. I have an external hard drive which I use to back up but may treat myself to a new one for downloading my family tree info! I don't believe I...

Re: Installing current FH data onto new computer running Windows 10
Thank you Mike. One more question, should I download the project onto an external hard disk from the old computer before uploading to the new? Actually one more question (sorry) if I am successful, or should I say when, would you advise updating from version 5 to 7 or no need? I hate not understandi...

Re: Installing current FH data onto new computer running Windows 10
With reference to the lost registration key many moons ago, I remember now I had saved it onto my hard drive in Documents and had to go in my loft (luckily I hadn't thrown the computer away!) and set everything up to retrieve it!

Re: Installing current FH data onto new computer running Windows 10
Hi all, I had forgotten that I needed to revisit this forum to read replies, thank you! Thanks also for those responses. In answer to the questions asked I do still have the cd and the installation key, well there are numbers and letters written on boxes and the cover of the cd so am guessing that i...

Installing current FH data onto new computer running Windows 10
Hi, I have been running FH version 5 for many years (only a basic user to be honest!) but now need to buy a new computer which will be running Windows 10/11 instead of Windows 7. I have been reading/researching the best way to do this but keep getting more and more confused. I am so worried about lo...

Re: Problem with Historian 5
I am an avid reader, Mike, and never start on anything until I've read the 'rules'! Unfortunately, I am a much better learner, as I said, if I see something being done rather than having to understand many pages of instruction. I can see that is the only way for me to progress with this program thou...

Re: Problem with Historian 5
Mike you are a true star and computer 'teacher'. I have just spent a fair time at the computer deleting many 'no spouses' etc. and my family tree is now looking much more normal! I will try to keep it this way! Many, many thanks.

Re: Problem with Historian 5
Thanks Mike, I did see a number of the no spouse in the records and wondered how this had happened - I will try to sort this out using your suggestions. Fingers crossed this puts it right and I don't lose something I'd rather not! Back to the reading board for me! Your help is much appreciated.

Re: Problem with Historian 5
Hi Mike, I think I have managed to copy some of the data from my computer but no idea if this will give you an insight into what I mean! My Aunt and Uncle are far apart on here with their children listed under each of them, is this right? Can you tell me why there are so many blank boxes of a differ...

Re: Problem with Historian 5
So sorry Mike, I have absolutely no idea how to find my way around FH! I clicked on 'All relatives diagram', thought it looked great then noticed that whole families were duplicated. Husband and wives were in boxes side by side and then as I moved across the screen they were separated. Their childre...

Problem with Historian 5
Hi, I have been inputting family information into this program for a while now but only today found the button at the top of the page to look at a 'picture' of my family tree before my eyes. All I can say is I am totally dumb-founded because so much of the information I have put in is repeated somet...

Re: exporting family tree to another persons computer
Thanks for your reply but the relative I wish to send the family tree to only has a tablet and someone has installed a GEDCOM reader on it to enable download. I don't know if he wishes to change or add info or whether he just wishes to see what I have amassed over the years. Is it possible then for ...

Christmas lights at top of page...
I love the fairy lights at the top of the page but I don't like them breaking and the loud noise that they make - each time something breaks I jump a mile and that's with the volume put down!

Re: lost registration key
Many thanks Xantex, this will help if I go looking again although it doesn't ring any bells at the moment! I'm going to try to set up my old computer (now in loft of course!) and see if I didn't delete the program before dismantling as I have been told how to get the licence number from properties o...

Re: lost registration key
Thanks for taking the time to help me Mike. It doesn't sound good though, does it? :( I really can't remember what the registration key came on but it is not in the booklet or printed on the box - how much more sensible would that have been? I am always so careful with anything that may be needed ag...

lost registration key
I recently purchased and installed a boxed/cd copy of Family Historian 5. Last week I bought a new computer and yesterday tried to install said program. I can't as it is asking for my registration key which I cannot find. It is not printed on the CD cover nor on the booklet that came with the progra...

Thank you both for your tips on how to get the best out of Family Historian - I do have the book and have read it through (much easier to learn trying it out though and I have had a tentative go at the sample project). I'm sure you will be seeing more of me though......[wink]

I'm in! Thanks for your advice but in the end I asked my son (27) and he pressed a few buttons and Bob's your Uncle! I may say that I pressed the same buttons but it didn't work and I don't know why - but I am now raring to go.[smile][smile]

How to import from GSP .gft file
Thank you both for your suggestions on how I may solve my problem. I'm out all day but will try again tonight. Bill, I can access all my family tree info it's just trying to export it here! The information booklet which came with the CD etc (many years ago) just tells me to 'select the export as GED...
