Memory Stick with U3 : can one use demo FH on it?

Here's how they describe it: PortableApps.com provides a truly open platform that works with any hardware you like (USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive, etc). It's open source built around an open format that any hardware vendor or software developer can use. http://portableapps.com/about/wha...

What other software do you use for Family History?

One of the books I have in my library is Emily Croom's Unpuzzling Your Past http://www.unpuzzling.com/ and its companion workbook with handy forms which can be removed and photocopied. Other log forms are available from websites, other books, etc. What I don't understand is, these forms exist, and t...

what browser are you using? If you are using Firefox, go to 'Downloads' and clear out the list of files you have downloaded. For 1.5, a list which was too full (I think it was over 20 entries) would cause your downloads to stall. I don't know if they have fixed the issue with 2.0, because I got into...

I agree with Jane's suggestion to build a small sample file, in order to learn how to do data entry in FH. And I highly recommend Nick Walker's excellent add-on, Gedcom Census, for entering census data. If you dislike the feeling you are duplicating your previous work, then choose some other task su...

The new version looks much better on my setup -- thanks! One comment on 1841. A kind soul did a census lookup for me and sent a transcription. When I put in the ages for the members of this family, I get a warning that the age is unlikely because the age was supposed to be rounded down to the neares...

What do you do with all those cover Cd's

Well, this is embarrassing. I use the program GenSmarts http://www.gensmarts.com/ . It is a research assistant -- it scans your GEDCOM file and alerts you to missing records in your files, and suggests websites and other research facilities where you might find the missing data. I wrote a quick note...

What do you do with all those cover Cd's

At the moment, I only have a dozen discs, so I haven't cataloged them. They are stored in a file box along with the CDs for my genealogy software and other software CDs and DVDs. To date the only time they've had material on the area I am working on (Devon), it was the issue where the cover story wa...

Memory Stick with U3 : can one use demo FH on it?

Just wanted to post a few links for the users here who might not be familiar with U3 and other portable applications. The main U3 site: http://www.u3.com/ U3 fakes out your computer into thinking it is running an application off a CD-ROM. There's a program called the LaunchPad from which you run the...

Adoption by New Husband

The other question I would ask is, if there is a name change for a child adopted by the new husband, if there is no new certificate issued, where else might that information be recorded? In my own case, (ordinary adoption as an infant in the US) I have a 'birth registration' rather than a birth cert...

I haven't done any photo restoration yet, but in my to-read pile I have one of the 'Dummies' books dealing with Photo Restoration. The publisher's website has helpful 'articles' excerpted from the books. Those might give you an idea of what sorts of things are possible when retouching photos. http:/...

Gedcom Census error handling (bravo)

I am quite happy with the way things work now -- and I can see that it would be an insane amount of work to change the program to deal with that situation, which is rare. I posted about it because I was amused at myself, sitting there like a dolt thinking 'now what do I do?' when clearly, I could ha...

Gedcom Census error handling (bravo)

Hello, Nick -- Just wanted to mention that today I had what a programmer might call an 'unexpected conditon'. While entering a family's census record, there was a lodger in the household for which there was no information at all aside from his name and gender. Thus I had no age or birthplace informa...

finding families outside of census records

Just to clarify: I am in the US, researching locations that are not where I currently live, so much of my research is done online. I have access to the Ellis Island records, and the other US ports (via Ancestry.com). The questions I have now are a result of finding second entries -- where the person...

finding families outside of census records

My husband's family came to the US from Devon, and like many families, went back and forth between England and the US multiple times. Some of the trips are annoyingly timed so that they just missed the census -- on both sides of the Atlantic. On the US side I've been able to fill in some of the gaps...

What other software do you use for Family History?

I've looked at Bygones, but it doesn't seem to get along with my elderly computer.

Sometimes it starts.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Since I can't get it to start reliably, I haven't used it much.
