death notices

Thanks for your reply.

A quick lookup of the town names in the notices which have a location longer than the house name or street address reveals that they are from Scotland (two from Lanarkshire, one from Dunbartonshire).

Re: Records for Ships Steward

Seen on Dick Eastman's blog: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/05/familysearch-an.html Family Search has announced a three-year project with Find My Past to digitize and make available online some British Historical Records.  These have been licensed by TNA.   The three-year projec...

death notices

I just got issue 64 -- May 2008 -- of the magazine Your Family Tree (which appears here in the North American market as Your Family History for some reason not clear to me.) They have an article on Death Certificates, which includes other ways to find death information so one can order the certifica...

You're quite right, Jane.

That's what I've done with the Census images and it has worked out well. The only difficulty is making the time to sit down and do it properly -- and creating a sensible set of folders.

You all know what happens. You see something, like the free download for a sample issue of a magazine, or a record you want to save for later study. You save it to your hard drive. Somewhere. A couple of months later, you see it again. And you save another copy. Somewhere else. Pretty soon, you end ...

Since trial versions of GenSmarts are available, I encourage everyone to try it out before making a purchase. I did not use GenSmarts much before switching over to Family Historian, so I didn't pick up on the differences in behavior between using GEDCOM vs. an Ancestral Quest file. As for using quer...

The program does scan GEDCOM files and make suggestions based on what it has found. Perhaps Aaron means that it doesn't automatically strike the suggestions from the list based on the source data in a GEDCOM file. If I see suggestions for things I've found already, I mark them as 'found' -- that sho...

Things I'd like to see

I want to second the comment that satyricon said about Ancestry 'stickies' -- for two census records in my husband's family, people have 'corrected' things which were not wrong! In one family, a daughter was left off the main page and appears on a supplemental page for the entire county. There are m...

Re: Records for Ships Steward

Just wanted to mention that I have discovered a ship's steward with the same name as someone I am researching. This person has the same combination of first middle and last names. Fortunately he is working in the 1920s where the Crew lists have more information than those from earlier years, so I ca...

I got the Bad Census Index Blues

That's a good question! I'll look for that, but I'm hampered by being all the way across the country from the town I'm researching, so at the moment I'm only working with what might be online. I did have a look at the (modern-day) property tax records this morning, and discovered that the apartment ...

Just for fun, I decided to search the address I had in 1900 to see what is there. That address is also undeliverable, and now appears to be a parking lot. The commercial building next door was built in 1935. Checking out the 1930 address next. Now this is interesting. The building at the 1930 addres...

Things I'd like to see

If you had your way, what would you change at the genealogical venues you frequent? My current peeve is Ancestry's search engine. If I could buy the company, I would change the whole way the search results are presented to the user. There would be explicit statements for each data set about what fie...

Perhaps this will be useful to someone else as a 'case study', so I'll post a bit more about the problem. The building was a multi-family structure. 1) a check at the USPS web site shows that the address is currently non-deliverable. This sometimes happens when an address is incomplete (e.g. for an ...

Yes, that's a very useful link!

Unfortunately I don't have addresses for any of the relatives on the UK side, after they went back to England. So I'll have to wait until the general release of the 1911 Census to look for my husband's folks.

Did I mention that the street is a boundary between two EDs? The first ED had the street in it, but the sheets I checked had odd numbers. So I decided to try the ED next door, in case the even numbers were there. I found the right street and found some even numbers, but not the range of even numbers...

If you are browsing census images when you should be in bed, and you are falling asleep at the keyboard, the pages don't seem to take any time at all to load. Nick, I know they may not have been recorded -- but until I look, how will I that's the case, vs. some insanely bad transcription / OCR? I have records that place a certain family at a particular address in 1919 and 1925. You'd think that maybe they'd be at that address in the 1920 Census, right? But no -- I can't find them. I tried searching on the husband's first name only. I tried searching on the wife's first name only. It's a se...

Car Registration numbers

If you have car clubs in your area for collectible cars of the same vintage, check with them.  They may trace ownership of their vehicles through the 'lifetime' of the car, and be familiar with what records exist for an area.

Tracing an ancestor

Look for any information you can get at, not just information pertaining to deaths. Searching for siblings, children, and associates may lead you to other information. For example, the obituaries of other family members may list him as a survivor and say where he is living. I found the death date of...
