ChrisBowyer said: The difficult bit when looking back at a piece of the tree you did a year ago (which neither source citations nor flags really deal with) is not so much where did you get the specific data from, but how do you know they're all the same person, i.e. the relationships rather than th...

I am in the same boat -- and I was considering option (d): one source for the newspaper, with publication details in 'where within source' to show date and page number, etc.

I've now discovered that there is a portable app flavor of WinMerge, so perhaps I can install it on my USB stick and run it on the hard drive -- thus avoiding the logjam of not being able to install WinMerge on my drive because I don't have enough room because I need to run WinMerge. [grin] In the m...

Finding A Death
Have you checked trade directories, city directories, parish magazines, historical newspapers, etc. from the area in which he lived? My advice would be to search for other relatives in whose records he might be listed. I found one person's date of death in his married daughter's passport application...

Next step: clearing enough space to install a dupe checker.
I need a portable app.
I suppose I could just toss my entire Genealogy folder onto my external hard drive.
That would give me the room to zip up some of the non-genealogy gunk.

I agree. If you are sorting out census data, city directories, tax records, anything with a street address -- it would be a huge help to be able to keep track of street addresses and even buildings on a separate tab.
I'm pressing the note tab into service at the moment, but it is not ideal.

Tried to download WinMerge, but the download wouldn't start on CNet or ZDNet. I'll cruise by tucows next and see what I can find there.

I'm still on the lookout for a research log / task manager and came across ToDoList 5.5 by AbstractSpoon Software: http://www.abstractspoon.com/tdl_resources.html ToDoList is a rare form of task management tool, one that allows you to repeatedly sub-divide your tasks into more manageable pieces whil...

Re: Records for Ships Steward
Just wanted to mention that my copy of Your Family Tree issue 65 (June 2008 ) arrived in the mail today -- it includes a four-page article 'relatives at sea' which is a nice overview of what kind of resources can be found online -- including census records for 1901 and sometimes earlier.

A question for the programmers, hackers, and geeks among us: Has anyone used a program like WinMerge on GEDCOM files, or does a similar program exist which is designed to do the same? http://winmerge.org/ WinMerge is an Open Source (GPL) visual text file differencing and merging tool for Windows. It...

Auto-citation when editing fields, not just adding
Well, I am one of those 'neither fish nor fowl' users. I am not a coder myself -- I am a language and data-handling person -- but I understand enough about programming and computers that I do rate as a geek. I can certainly appreciate an elegant design when I see one. However, when I have my 'ordina...

Since mares are generally listed in race programs as 'name by [sire's name]', I was thinking of putting the 'by sire' information in the surname field as an aid to quick identification.
Custom events could be made for race results, I suppose.

When I was a child, I became fascinated with thoroughbred racing, and especially with the horses' pedigrees. (It's a shame -- or perhaps a blessing, who knows? -- that no one introduced me to the concept of doing genealogy at that time, or I would have jumped right in, making 'pedigrees' for everyon...

Don't worry about the numbers yet. Look at your own entry on the records window. Right-click on that entry and choose 'Properties' which will have a pane with your information on it. Push the button which says 'Parents' and look at your father's record. There should be two tabs, one with his marriag...

What does it look like when you go into the Records View side of Family Historian, rather than the diagram? You should be able to see if people are linked correctly, and un-link or re-link them as needed. If you've created a link you didn't mean to, undo it, and see if that helps clean up the mess o...

'Pirdie' is a surname. A Google search turns up links to Ancestry and other family history sites (including this thread).
I thought I had a source for 'Pirdie' as a first name, but I was mistaken -- I was mis-remembering George MacDonald's book The Princess and Curdie.

The American comedian Jeff Foxworthy http://www.jefffoxworthy.com/homepage.shtml has as part of his routine a series of one-line jokes that make up a test to see if you might be a 'redneck'. The formula goes like this: 'If your house doesn't have curtains, but your truck does, you might be a redneck...
