Re: Which pdf reader?
I have been collecting out-of-copyright directories and local histories from Google Books, The Internet Archive, and FamilySearch. Most of the time I choose PDFs to preserve the original page layouts. The new version of Foxit has added a very useful feature: Save the search results to PDF or CSV fil...

Aye jmurphy, An alternative is to enter the unknown named brothers spouse as "Christina Hughes //" . Christina being her given name, Hughes her married surname and // for where her maiden surname will be entered and her relationship to the head of the family is selected as "Daughter-in-Law" from th...

Re: Where is Ancestral Sources
Thanks Mike for those suggestions, as well. I have been reading through the Knowledge Base and watching the Ancestral Sources tutorials. I've been playing around with data too. One question I have is whether it is possible to create other facts and attributes for other details from the record. For ...

Re: 1901 census
I dislike making 'placeholder' individuals where the intermediates are not known, so I connect grandchildren to grandparents and other reported relations as associated persons. I can understand a distaste for 'placeholder' individuals - however, I do use them - my excuse is that I work off diagrams...

Re: Sources, Citations and Methods
Sorry for the late reply but I've just seen this thread for the first time and I didn't see this when it was first posted. You need a different mindset for FH as most of the genealogy programs on the market are US based so they have a sequence of create the source then create the citation and use a ...

Re: Female Married Name
My use of ?? is an unambiguous way of saying I don’t know, and use it often for things like occupation or name . Nee is a universal term used by everyone, not just genealogist, so using Nee ?? as a surname is unambiguous and its meaning clear, which is why I use it. :D Actually, it isn't unambiguou...

I agree with Tamura Jones. If you don't know something, leave the field blank. https://www.tamurajones.net/FNULNUMNUUNK.xhtml I created a custom field in Family Historian that I call "Who". In this field, I write information that allows me to distinguish individuals from each other. (For men, it mig...

Re: Which pdf reader?
Jan, Just an FYI... PDF-Xchange Editor does allow you to OCR PDF documents in the free version and also allows appending to existing PDF files. Also, once you have all the images in the PDF file you can use PDF-Xchange Editor to extract them all into a single or into separate .JPG images in one com...

In addition to Adobe Reader, I have used: Nitro PDF: https://www.gonitro.com/ Foxit Reader: https://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf-reader/ Sumatra PDF: https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/free-pdf-reader.html Since I print to PDF instead of paper most of the time, I like NitroPDF for its ease in appending p...

Re: Can online services support FH research?
To add to my earlier post -- Always, always, always download a copy of any record images (Ancestry calls them "citation media") to your own computer for use with Family Historian. The big subscription sites and sites like FamilySearch sometimes lose their rights to offer a data set, and if that happ...

Re: Findmypast hints
Be aware that both Ancestry and findmypast hint engines for the online tree system go dormant if you haven't looked at that particular person in a while. If you are working on the online trees, you can nudge the system into giving you new hints by editing the person you'd like to see new hints for. ...

Re: Additional information sheet
As jmurphy says, I would use an Excel spreadsheet. If you think about how you might want to consult your information you can make headers for columns so that you can sort the information in different ways. I do this for Parish record infrmation and GRO indexes for One Name studies. Anne The one cau...

... Best practice is probably to spell out the word "county" in full, e.g. Alameda, Alameda County, California (plus whatever you like for USA) but it can get very long, especially if you spell out United States. ... That is a good example of the problems we face in the UK with place names. There are several Reg Districts that included Slapton . 1837 - 1998 Kingsbridge Reg District see https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/kingsbridge.html 1998 - 2007 South Hams Reg District see https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/di...

A recent blog post at findmypast has prompted me to revisit searching by census address. https://blog.findmypast.com/1911-census-address-search-reintroduced-to-findmypast-2538067585.html The post starts off as follows: Our handy address search tool, which previously only featured on the 1901 and 191...

Re: Place names - counties corporate
I was just doing some cleanup for an old file, and discovered that I had both Slapton, Devon, England, and Slapton, Kingsbridge R.D., Devon, England (probably an artifact of the 1939 Register). "What would FHUG advise for best practices?" I thought, then discovered I had already written posts about ...

Re: Additional information sheet
From the information given at The Mitchell Library's page on Burial Lair and Cremation Registers , I would guess that lair numbers are similar to plot numbers in the USA. Knowing the ownership of the plot in the US can give clues about family members. A record of plot ownership might show all the di...

Re: Findmypast hints new option
I agree, Mike, but if enough people are attaching records from a particular record group, perhaps findmypast might add that to the subset of records for which hints are being generated? We'll see what happens. I understand that hint engines can only search so much, otherwise they are a big drain on ...

Re: Research Advice for a Newbie
Chris -- I'll give my standard advice for newcomers, but first, here's a preamble. What I call the genealogy 'industry' (i.e. the big subscription sites) are keen to lock users into their own ecosystems. Most allow you to create a tree online and attempt to make it easy for you to attach records fro...
