Re: Ancestry Tree tags vs. Family Historian
D'oh! I had forgotten about the Research Planner Plugin.
I've now looked at the article in the KB https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/wiki/doku. ... ch_planner and I'll use that as a guide for all my task-oriented tagging.

Re: GEDCOM 5.5.1 Standard Release Nov 2019
For information about Family Tree Maker, take a look at Keith Ruggle's series Family Tree Maker to GEDCOM to Other Apps Crosswalk (Updated 26 Oct 2019) on Genealogy Tools.com. Keith started the series when Ancestry dropped the Windows version of FTM but before it was picked up by its new developer. ...

This is the kind of thing I would flag on an Ancestry online tree with one of the MyTreeTags (TM). I'm pondering how to transfer my Ancestry Tags to Family Historian -- see this thread: 17357|Ancestry Tree tags vs. Family Historian Ancestry's current set of Relationship tags: Adopted Into this Famil...

Thanks to all!
I'll have to review all my tags and consider what's best as I transfer my data over.

Ancestry Tree tags vs. Family Historian
Lately I've been doing "quick and dirty" work online via Ancestry's online tree system, entering data into Family Historian later, once I've had a chance to properly analyze things. Ancestry introduced MyTreeTags (tm) where we can tag profiles with things like Military service, direct ancestor, etc....

Re: RootsWeb [FHU] Mailing List to end
I don't envy any of the mailing list admins. Admin: "Let's move to Facebook" Some users: "Ew no I won't go there" Admin: "Let's move to Google Groups" Some users: "Ew no I hate Google" Users: "Some of my groups are going to Groups.io" Users: "Are you sure? It's pricey and who are those people?" Etc....

Re: RootsWeb [FHU] Mailing List to end
In all the uproar about the Lists going away, it has been a comfort knowing that FH users at least won't have to scramble to find somewhere else to go -- we already have a wonderful robust forum. What we will be losing is an avenue for outreach. The mailing list was good for answering simple questio...

Re: Grandchild, parent unknown
For linking grandparents and grandchildren, I don't like to use a dummy parent. Sometimes I add unnamed children to a tree because of a child count in a census, or because of un-named survivors in an obituary (as a reminder that there may be more people to look for). Suppose now I that I have done s...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG
It is my understanding that the Master Source in other programs would consist of the high-level data such as the details for the 1930 US Federal Census (Microcopy publication T626, Fifteenth Census of the United States, 1930, n number of microfilm rolls) which is common to all the census entries, an...

Much as I hate to steer people away from using Family Historian, I'll toss out a couple of suggestions for other diagramming tools. Tony Proctor's SVG was designed for people drawing trees for blog posts. I haven't used it yet, so I don't know what features if any it has for displaying charts for pr...

The only program I am aware of (edit: I didn't know about using TNG until I read the previous post) that offers this kind of option is Ancestral Quest, which has a collaboration feature. I used Ancestral Quest as a solo user before I abandoned it in favor of Family Historian 3. No one else in my fam...

... in the case of step relationships I don't usually record these relationships as such in FH because it is clear from diagrams or the Focus window that a child is descended from only one of the couple ... At risk of diverting off on a tangent, I would record children as step-children (to one pare...

Re: Evidence Explained citations and Evidentia
A couple of thoughts. I bought Evidence! quite a while ago now, and I haven't done a side-by-side comparison with the material in EE. You may want the little Evidence! as well as EE to see the development of ESM's thinking on analyzing evidence. Just as we look at sources and pay attention to the da...

Re: Evidence Explained citations and Evidentia
If you've got EE itself, you may not need Evidence! -- there will be a lot of overlap with the first two chapters of EE. But I do think ESM's article "Working with Historical Evidence" is important because it shows her argument of why the older systems of evidence analysis like what you learned in t...

Yes, EE is expensive -- I compromise by getting every other edition as an e-book. I have Evidence! (the slim white book) and EE 3rd Edition in hardcover, and EE 2nd Edition and EE 3 rev in e-editions. That way I can read EE 3rd edition in relative comfort and then refer to EE 3rd revised to see what...

Re: Ancestry DNA tests
In most cases I can identify a common ancestor. Does this mean that I can be fairly sure that the line from me to the common ancestor is established? if you're talking about simply comparing any one 4th-cousin match and you, then the answer is probably NO. Ancestry has "Shared Ancestor Hints" too b...

Re: Using Clooz with Family Historian (Legacy import)
One of the things I haven't really worked out yet is whether I want to send information from Clooz to FH, or carry on as I was, using Ancestral Sources. And what was the conclusion? At the moment, I'm leaning strongly towards keeping each program separate, even if it means duplicate data entry. How...

Late to the party, but Ancestry does have a 'place authority' of known (to it) places, which can sometimes be wrong. If you find something woefully wrong, report it and (one hopes) it can be fixed. This is one of my peeves -- that websites will use a place authority and not say what the underlying s...

Re: Evidence Explained citations and Evidentia
I'd like to point out three things about Evidence Explained that get overlooked a lot of the time, in the heat of discussion. The first -- on page 10 of the 2012 edition (not the most recent, I know, but it's the one I have as an ebook and therefore easiest to copy from), Elizabeth Shown Mills says:...
