Re: Download managers
Okay, Mike, I thought I was following you okay, and then I hit the wall. sqlite-manager has been installed and appears on the Tools menu. I invoked it and it launched okay. I selected places.sqlite and clicked Go. I went to Tables and seleted moz_annos which is the second in the list on the right af...

Re: Using Ancestry's Family Tree and Family Historian
I use the Ancestry Tree system as a sort of organized version of the Shoebox. My trees are private, so if I make mistakes, I won't lead other users astray, but my settings on Ancestry allow communication with other users, so if someone asks, I write back and help them with the information they want....

Re: Default font and legibility
Just to let you know I have spoken to Calico Pie and have got permission to say that the next version of Family Historian will have full Unicode support. Jane -- this is great news. I recommend FH all the time because of the flexibility one has with queries and plugins, and many people instantly re...

Re: Download managers
I just downloaded HistoryViewer and gave it a try. It's possible that I didn't let it sit and 'think' long enough, but it appears to work for all of the Firefox functions *except* the Download History. I can't remember exactly when Mozilla changed the location of the download history, but I suspect ...

Re: Download managers
Well, yes, Mike, that would fix the problem until I downloaded something else and forgot to change the folder, not unlike forgetting to turn off Auto-Source-Citation in Family Historian. Ideally I'd like a log of all the filenames downloaded and where they came from. I'd like something that w...

Download managers
I want to be able to capture the download history of the files I am collecting from different sites like Find My Past. I use Firefox. If I "show all downloads" I can look at the history and it shows me the filenames and the site they came from, plus a timestamp. It used to be that one could scrape t...

Re: Census - adding new individuals (2nd question)
I add a dummy child for cases where a census gives me "mother of 10 children, 7 living" and I don't know all 10 children. But I prefer NOT to add dummy children to the cases where I have grandparents/grandchildren in census records. I add the grandchild and link him or her to the grandparent who is ...

Re: queries about time and place
Assuming that I have regularized all the place names, what I'd like to do is generate a list of names, or at least the surnames, of all the people who have an event in Somerset. (Actually, a surname-only search just turned up over 6000 hits so I'd better make a list of individuals.) I can choose eac...

queries about time and place
When I am searching for new records, I have two approaches. Very often I'm reviewing what I've collected about a particular person, and I'll be on the lookout for anything I can find about a particular person. Sometimes I'll use a global search at a given provider, but once I have a lot of material,...

Re: Help with a Latin translation any one?
It may be easier to decipher the handwriting, as well as translate, if you have a checklist of terms which are likely to be in the document. Many sites offer Genealogical Word Lists for ease in translation. One such list:

Re: historical travel and transportation research
A 20-mile walk is not so bad in itself. As a teenager, I did a 26-mile walk for charity. The difficulty is the state of the road, especially when transporting goods to market. I saw an article recently about the free range that children were allowed when playing. It has narrowed dramatically in the ...

Re: Admitted Evidence in Event of Trial
I thought about going for the Ancestry promo, but decided not to because (unlike Brightsolid) they don't make it easy to unsubscribe. It's a pity we can't just pick and choose all the good features and make one really good website. When I am using BNA, I miss features that I have on Genealogy Bank, ...

Re: Admitted Evidence in Event of Trial
Ah, I haven't had a World sub on Ancestry for a while now, so I'm limping along on a month here and there on Find My Past when they throw a promo code. And every now and again when Ancestry.co.uk offers free access for a weekend, I'll go grab whatever I can from the record sets that are offered. P.S...

Re: Admitted Evidence in Event of Trial
What records are you looking at? I don't know if it would help you answer this question, but have you checked the British Newspaper Archive for accounts of the trial? This month's Lost Cousins newsletter has a promo code to get a month's access for one pound. For the 2great-uncle who was transported...

Cordwainer = Shoe Maker. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordwainer There are times I love a site where you don't have to show your workings ;) And you could make a question -- even self-answered -- out of this for another site -- just saying :ugeek: Oh, I'll mine this for several questions, not to wo...

Re: historical travel and transportation research
I have census records which place members of my husband's family in Slapton, Brixham, South Pool, and Asprington in Devon; and Portsmouth and Portsea Island in Hampshire. Civil registrations are mostly in Kingsbridge, Totnes, and Stoke Damerel Registration districts. The only baptism and burial reco...

Back in January, on her blog No Story Too Small , American blogger Amy Johnson Crow posted a New Year's challenge to other bloggers to write about one ancestor each week. Re: find unsourced events
Sorry, that was a senior moment on my part  The information may not be useful to the person who asked the question, but someone may come along later who wants to know about Windows utilities, so no real harm done. One could make a case that the question is not well-formed because it contains ...

Re: find unsourced events
My question was badly worded. It was inspired by a question on Genealogy & Family History Stack Exchange , where one of the users asked: Is there a way to generate a list of events in a GEDCOM file without a source, maybe sorted by person or surname? Since that was his entire question, I was tempted...

Re: Changing repositories
Elizabeth Shown Mills in "Evidence Explained" says on page 58 "a web site is not a repository" She begins to by saying "Most websites are the equivalent of a book." and cites websites created by individuals. This description works well if you are considering sites such as US GenWeb sites or Rootswe...

I use Firefox as my browser, and have used two different extensions -- Download Helper

and
Flash Video Downloader
http://www.flashvideodownloader.org/
There are others, but these are the two I've tried so far.

Re: Changing repositories
Elizabeth Shown Mills' advice is to cite what you actually use. If what I am using is a digital image that is served to me by Ancestry, then Ancestry.com (or sometimes Ancestry.co.uk) is the repository. The website is the means by which I examine the digital image. If you are citing Ancestry's datab...
