Re: 1939 Register

Yes, I don't understand the thinking behind searching the FH Wish List for an AS feature. Even if an FH feature, it would not be in the Wish List if it already existed. The Read Before Posting advice mentions 3 things to check and you only checked the 1st. 1. Already on the Wish List 2. Covered on ...

Re: Trans-Atlantic Passenger Lists

A search on the Castle Garden site http://www.castlegarden.org/searcher.php for William Bradley from 1881 to 1882 produces 8 people of that name. However your William would have been about 40, and those in the list range in age from 11 to 30. (Castle Garden was the main US immigration centre until ...

Re: My Heritage - A Warning!

Peter -- I don't know if you use Google Calendar at all, but I've started to use the Task list to make a note to myself of when the auto-renew comes up on my subscriptions (and when the sub expires if it isn't set to auto-renew). I do appreciate that you can easily turn off auto-renew at Find My Pas...

Re: Standard "in" text for Places

BTW, for finding and using codes for old places, (at least in Scotland) have you ever used the NLS website ? It has a huge range of old maps, which use modern overlays, and enables you to pin-point long-gone streets, farms and villages. It's an amazing resource, and well worth a look. http://maps.n...

Re: Transfer of media by gedcom

Just sticking my nose in here because I purchased FTM2014 (after the announcement) to help with checking whether I have actually downloaded all of the (in Ancestry-speak) "citation media" in my online Ancestry trees, especially since Ancestry bars you from looking at the images if your subscription ...

To the previous answers I'd like to add a link to the British Library's Guide on tracing living people: http://www.bl.uk/britishlibrary/~/media/subjects%20images/government%20publications/pdfs/tracing-living-people.pdf Some of the resources within have already been mentioned, and some of the links m...

Re: Using Clooz with Family Historian (Legacy import)

I have upgraded Clooz, and I'm looking forward to trying out the new export to FH after the holiday period is over. One of the things I haven't really worked out yet is whether I want to send information from Clooz to FH, or carry on as I was, using Ancestral Sources. I often have information which ...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software

After poking about in Ancestry's support center, and doing some research, I decided to buy a boxed copy of FTM instead of purchasing a download via Ancestry's website. I found the Platinum edition which comes with an Ancestry subscription -- for not much more than the subscription would have been. S...

While FH users get a discount, it doesn't hurt to keep an eye out for other offers. Thomas MacEntee, the author of the Geneabloggers blog, and the person behind the Genealogy Do-Over, has a series of posts about Genealogy Bargains. Earlier this month, he announced an offer from MyHeritage: Are you r...

Re: Facebook

Jane -- Because of the announcement over FTM's EOL, I've been recommending Family Historian to FTM users when I can, especially on Facebook. Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software

I know I can import a Gedcom file easy enough, but it's the many census and various record images that are attached to people which I do not know how to handle. FTM + TreeSync exported GEDCOM usually include attached Media images that are NOT included with an Ancestry exported GEDCOM . But maybe yo...

Re: 3 different forenames 3 entries on Familky search

I agree with the comments already posted. These and all extracted records are derivative records. Errors can happen any time a record is copied and/or modified (i.e. when the transcription is converted to a computer database). See if the originals still exist, and try to get copies of the images. If...

Re: Ancestry to Retire Family Tree Maker Software

I just heard the story on Facebook and am talking up Family Historian for the people who are Christmas shopping. This is not a hoax - got confirmation from Crista Cowan. From the blog post: [W]e’ve taken a hard look at the declining desktop software market and the impact this has on being able to co...

Re: Place names - counties corporate

A linked question with tongue in cheek - for those of us who claim our UK place-names are "settlement, county, country" - what do we do with unitary authorities? Do we treat them as similar to counties corporate? Such as "Warrington, Lancashire, England" up to 1974; "Warrington, Cheshire, England" ...

Re: 1939 Register custom query help

I hope you realise that clicking the web search page column headings performs a sort, and clicking again performs a reverse sort. So click twice on the FindMyPast heading to sort the 1939 Register entries together at the top. Yes, that's exactly what I did. A very nice feature! To convert the Resid...

1939 Register custom query help

How can I make use of Family Historian to set up searches in the 1939 Census? Here's what I'd like to do. I already understand how to use the standard "Estimated Alive At" query. I can plug in the date that the enumeration was taken and get a search result. I see that I can save it to a file, so fro...

Thanks, Mike. While I have read some of the material at TNA's site, I had not seen that portal. Military records

Every Remembrance Day, Ancestry in its various incarnations offers free access to its Military record collections. I seem to be stuck in a loop of not finding anything, or I should say, not finding anything on Ancestry.co.uk. This is hardly surprising, given that most of the people who served that I...

Re: Map of Census Parishes

Apologies for the late reply, but I know for US Census records some maps are available at the US National Archives. Might TNA have similar documents for the census? If not, could there be useful data at Histpop.org -- the instructions, or statistics generated from the 1841 Census?
