Serif have a free DTP package which is very good. It can be found at http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/pageplus and will certainly do what you want.
I use it to create my Family History Group's Newsletter. Many functions are the same as MS Publisher.

I have a custom event for 'convicted' where I use the sentence '{individual} was {label} {date} {place}. {note}' and I have set Label as 'convicted' (NB no capital letter). I also have a custom attribute (not event) for 'sentenced' where I use '{individual} was {label} to {value}. {note}' for the se...

Mangled Hyperlinks in Reports and Websites
This problem has been raised before over the last few years. (No time to look for the threads)
Here's hoping that it finally gets fixed in the next update now that Jane has referred it to Calico.

Marriages Discussion
Rather than automatic, an option would be preferable for me.If a death / burial record did not exist for that individual, I always record a date of death as being before 'Date of Marriage'.
It would be good if AS did this automatically

IE8 not displaying EMF file information
The diagrams are pictures or, more correctly, images. On your example link, the image doesn't show in Firefox or Safari either. It probably won't make any difference but naming the file without spaces (use the underscore _ instead) is generally regarded as good practice. My understanding has alway...

A book format
Printing the family tree in the form of a book with a narrative AND charts would surely be every family historian's ultimate aim Are you sure? I, for one, do not aim for that. I much prefer publishing on the Internet where people can contact me and we can share useful information with each other....

Addition of an image to a citation
Jane & Peter I too normally follow the many sources route and this is why trying to attach to a citation is new for me and I'm not being successful. In using the All tab, which I don't normally do, I'm probably doing something wrong. I've now found another way to achieve what I wanted (using a dumm...

Addition of an image to a citation
Jane for now just use the all tab and add the media item to the source citation that way. I've tried that but if I have two citations, each with its own image, only one image is shown in the report and then only when I tick the 'Show Source Pictures' on the Sources Tab in Report Options. The 'Show ...

Addition of an image to a citation
I have just recently found a use for having an image (not census) attached to a citation but I can't work out how to do it. From memory, in V3 there was a camera icon in the yellow source/citation pane but in V4 it has disappeared and there is only an icon showing an arrow pointing at 45 degrees wit...

Marking forums read
I don't think you have to use the mark as read button(s) at all; I certainly don't. I just read the posts and leave the site. The next time I visit (for me usually the next day although I occasionally come back the same day) there are only new posts showing.

Nick Thanks. Further searching found the appropriate section to edit. Excellent! For the moment, I have added the additional List Items of Employer, Worker and Own Account, each in Double Square Brackets. This edit has created an additional template for the same year. Is this correct? I was ex...

Nick I've been getting to know the programme by running a test Project. In the UK 1901 Census, when the field for 'Employer, Worker or Own account' is left blank, the resulting Occupation Note field contains 'Employer, Worker or Own account: ' while when a value is entered it shows 'Employer, Worke...

Maria Did you notice Gerry's comment 'You don't need to export to a gedcom file format' (i.e. do not use File > Import/Export > Export...)? Just load your .ged file directly into The Complete Genealogist. You'll find it located in your Projects folder in the sub-folder ending with '.fh_data' HTH

Vimira It is not actually an equals sign but two parallel lines. I don't know if this will help but if you increase the distance between the two boxes you will find out if the lines are actually there. You can do this by clicking on the Movement Contol Box button on the Diagram Menu (the last butto...

Neal Go to Work with Tools > Fact Sets... and tick the Show Hidden Box. That will display them but you will have to redefine all their details including the sentence and Advanced... > Auto Create Notes. I've just been through this exercise too after a hard drive failure. On the 'Page not found' page, select Downloads > Latest Free Upgrade (version 4 users only) and that takes you to the required download or better still on the top right-hand side of the page use the link 'V 4.0.2 Now Available' as this also gives you the details of what's in the upgrade.

How to link source citation to external website
I've always just pasted the site address in the note section of my citation. When web pages are generated, the address is then shown as a link to click on to go to the address (V4). It should be noted however that the link address generated will often be incorrect if it contains an ampersand (&). F...
