Re: Have I lost everything?
Hi Russ, Hard disks are great although still magnetic media. I live in an area where lighting strikes on the overhead power cables will kill disks beyond repair. For important data consider writing to a CD/DVD. These I have found the most reliable. I have had USB sticks die frequently. I have experi...

Printing with silhouettes for living or private individuals
I would like to produce a print file (pdf) with any living or private (using flags) file displayed as silhouettes . This is to collaborate with two other researchers without giving away other peoples data. I have read about producing a web site (one day get there) although wondered if the print opti...

Re: Have I lost everything?
Hi Russell, I recently recovered a lost/corrupt file (my sons 6 months work and now he backs up) using "EaseUS data recovery" program. This was for a word doc so may be completely different. There were many versions of the file that could not be recovered but did not work and then I did something li...

Re: Short Certificate of Birth-James Dennis Graham
Hi Brian, I had the same problem attaching large files and initially resorted to a graphics editor, Irfanview (free), to reduce file sizes and relatively easy to use but still time consuming. I run Windows 10 OS and downloaded the free "snippet" tool. This is easy to use, quick and creates an image ...

Re: All relatives chart
I have tried setting the root further down although loose other parts of the tree. I now have more than one instance of a Brooks-Dowsett in another household. Starting a next session of editing from a chart this is good although if I start with a new "all decedents tree" for each session then the in...

Re: Can online services support FH research?
I have been using online resources more and thought I would share recent search experiences. I have been trying to track down two Alfred Brooks Dowsett (from Toppesfield/Heybridge/Maldon Essex). From a google "wild" (see what comes back) search I identified a Margaret Brooks Dowsett. Using genealogi...

Re: All relatives chart
I followed the advice I think. Included Timothy BD in AS and then added Albert Rutter as unrelated. I then added Rutter household keeping the relation to head of House hold in AS; each time I had to re-select Albert Rutter (not an issue). Made respective notes in TBD entry and inserted into tree and...

Re: All relatives chart
May be I am missing a trick here. I have added a marriage using AS that included a new individual as the male spouse of a daughter. In the tree the male spouse is displayed in the "all relatives diagram". Snippet below:- charles and gladys.JPG Also added using AS was the father of the added male spo...

I am using AS to add a marriage and the <auto text> is not including the "county" in "1922, Marriage solemnized at High St, Maldon, Essex in the Parish of All Saints in the County of ".

Re: recording a boarder in later census
Brent, I also have an example of a boarder marrying the daughter, after 1891, of the head of the household he was boarding at in 1891.
Do you add the complete household? How do you record the relationship to the head where the person is boarding (add as a child and then set relationship as boarder)?

recording a boarder in later census
I have a Timothy Brooks Dowsett in the 1891 & 1901 census who then appears as a boarder in the 1911 census under a different head of household, address etc. Timothy's age, place of birth matches and hyphenated surname unique from my research to date. So I am sure it is the same Timothy. 1891 (explic...

Re: Researching Brooks Dowsett
Thanks Keith, very much appreciated. Looks like Francis did not last long and where Rosanna went in the records I will follow up..one day. Charles (my great grandfather) married Hannah Eliza Wright who was from a fishing family from Heybridge/Maldon, Essex. Charles moved into fishing as a Hawker and...

Re: Can online services support FH research?
Thank you for your replies. I have not tried findmypast or ancestry to date although probably will give it ago. Not getting good results from genealogist regarding Essex Parish records; could be me. I may try a subscription with the ERO as most of my stuff is Essex although later stuff more further ...

Researching Brooks Dowsett
I have a hyphenated surname to research, mostly! Typically the Brooks in Brooks-Dowsett is the individuals middle name but not always. Also there are the expected variances of spelling in both parts of the name and also no Brooks in the name. Working through micro fiche at the ERO would appear to be...

Re: Can online services support FH research?
I think yes they can although there would appear to be inconsistencies/discepencies; before proceeding let me put this in context. My original research was 20+ years ago through talking to older relatives and then going through records at the Essex Record Office (ERO). The ERO have had online search...

"Penny has dropped" with the difference between charts and diagrams. My customization to WBD working diagrams have been applied to the sample project and guess it would apply vice-versus. As attached:-

Re: Page fault and laptop reboot
Hi Mike, The placing of BD under sample project was my "hand crafted" (copy & paste) restore afer upgrading to FH 6 from previous use in 2012 FH V4 and the gap between. My bad! After restoring to the desktop when opening FH I had a number of projects to open including a BD2 not under the sample proj...

Re: Page fault and laptop reboot
I decided to restore from FH backup zip file and settings plugin backup on my desk top. Now back to where I was so that is good. Data, customs settings and chart all restored. Noticed a couple of things:- 1. Maximum box size that had been increased was not restored; no big problem. 2. When adding in...

Page fault and laptop reboot
I was linking to faces on a chart with a shared media file when I had a "shared page" error and laptop had to reboot. On restarting FH the project is listed but I get the error message below. Looking for a snapshot FH does not show any. Using Windows Explorer there are files and one for today. fault...

adding siblings not shown on chart
I am adding siblings using the focus view window and they are not being being displayed in the chart. This may be normal although when I modify a record/change text scheme in chart that changes automatically when next field selected. This is great. After adding in focus view if I then pick a chart v...

Re: backup and restore
Cool that worked after ticking box and selecting new. So now when I exit I will do a save, save diagram and run the plugin, which is fine. Potentially a new requirement there e.g. "save everything". I am getting into this now and into my 20 C data with some interesting results on the diagram; that i...
