There's an article about using Windows Hosting Script for creating keyboard macros at http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/features/030316fe.htm Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but it dates from the right era [grin]

WW1 Conscription
Hello Miffy Interesting question - I'd never really thought about it until I read your message! There's some info about this on the National Archives web site at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/DisplayCatalogueDetails.asp?CATID=12197&CATLN=3&FullDetails=True&j=1. It looks like there wa...

keeping census information organized for dum
I separate my census images by country, followed by year and then family surname. On top of that I use a combination of the head of household's name, his/hear year of birth and the census source number. I've included a screen dump to clarify: [img]http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/Image12.png ...

Source Pane
Select Preferences from the Tools menu. Then select the Property Dialog tab, where you can then define the default size of the property dialog. Opting for Full keeps the source pane open all the time.

Army regiment name
Many thanks for the link Jane, it's not one that I came across when searching. It does look to be the right regiment/battalion.

Army regiment name
A relative has kindly scanned a letter, dated 31 October 1868, granting my great great grandfather a discharge from the army. The letter includes a regiment number, which I believe I've transcribed correctly as 2/XIIIth Light Infantry (see image below). http://www.fhug.org.uk/images/uploads/ArmyUnit...

What other software do you use for Family History?
As well as Family Historian I use: Gedcom Census Parish Locator Res Privata Excel (for research logging, although not ideal) Paint Shop Pro (for all photos and images) 1st Page 2000 (for HTML) Xenu's Link Sleuth (for link checking) I've just purchased Family Atlas for mapping my data. Thank You

Unfortunately Family Atlas can't be purchased as a download, you have to order it on CD. I've just ordered a copy online - you can find the appropriate web site by Googling for Family Atlas.

Jane said: Jane's Ancestors exported using Family Altas. One of the best bits is the time slider so you can show events in different date windows so see how the family spreadout or came together over time. Jane, many thanks for posting an example from Family Atlas. I've just ordered a copy, can't w...

Mapping genealogical data
Thanks for the recommendation Jane, those are two of the applications I've been considering. I particularly like the idea of being able to select time spans, making Family Atlas look the more promising of the two. Thanks also Arishmell for pointing out the 'My Maps' option on Google Maps - I didn't ...

Mapping genealogical data
I'd like to create maps showing where my ancestors were born, where they lived, migration roots etc. There are several software packages available but none provide demo versions so it's difficult to decide which to buy. Is there a particular package anyone would recommend? Many thanks. Lindsey ID:...

Gedcom Census and ScotlandsPeople Census Images
Nick Sorry, my reply was really to confirm/add further information about the ScotlandsPeople images rather than saying it was a problem. I don't regard not being able to see these images directly in Gedcom Census as an issue. In answer to your question, clicking the link opens the images in my defau...

Gedcom Census and ScotlandsPeople Census Images
I've downloaded quite a few census images from ScotlandsPeople and find I can't view them in Gedcom Census; I get the message 'Sorry but this type of image format cannot be previewed in Gedcom Census. Click here to open this in the default viewer for this file type'. However, I can view these images...

display living online, or not?
Because some people are strongly against having their details available online and also because of the possibility of identity theft, I've adopted a policy of not publishing any information about living persons. It saves a lot of aggravation in the long run.

Find and Replace edit
David Probably the easiest way is to edit your GEDCOM file using a text editor. You can then use the editor's Search/Find and Replace option. Remember to make a a copy of your GEDCOM file first just in case something goes wrong with the Search and Replace. If your a Windows user and your file isn't ...

How do you organise your files?
Nick, thanks for your response, I hadn't appreciated Gedcom Census could do all that; I shall be reviewing my filing system. In my defence, I'm new to Family Historian and Gedcom Census. BTW despite only realising part of its benefits I'm finding Gedcom Census an excellent application for speeding u...

How do you organise your files?
Maybe a bit late in contributing to this thread, but it may prove useful to someone so here goes. I use a combination of directories and filenames to organise my files. I have three directories named BmdIndex, Certificates and Census. The Census directory contains sub-directories for each census yea...

Census citations: How to enter Census Place
Thanks Chris, I hadn't considered that there may not be an order of magnitude with the different 'places' on the census forms. I've gone with your and Jane's suggestion of village/town/city, county, country and then add the other information such as ecclesiastical district as a note against the sour...

Jane
Thank you for your method. I think that's a good way of noting location because, as you say, it uses consistent locations; makes it much easier to see where family members lived regionally.

Census citations: How to enter Census Place
Hello I've just started using Gedcom Census and wondering how best to enter the Census Place. For example, an census entry I have for 1851 is noted as being in: (1) Parish of Hackney (2) Parliamentary Borough of Tower Hamlets (3) Ecclesiastical District of Dalston One option I've considered is to en...
