Inbreeding and mixed marriages on GR
GR say you no longer need to delete your old tree, but if you don't it can lead to the kind of errors you describe. I suggest you delete your tree from Genesreunited then upload your GEDCOM file again.

2nd part looks like B.E. Whittingham. Mother, then the address which looks as if it has been changed. 3 Back ... Herbert ... may be numbers 2(?) 37 Does such a street exist in the town in question? Did you buy it from the GRO or local Registrar, GRO copies are quite poor sometimes, local registrars ...

I have had fun finding places on Google Earth and saving them to My Places - villages are by name only, but in some places I can mark individual streets or churches. It is interesting to see just how far people travelled. The best thing about it is I can track them to France, Canada and Australia to...

The Genealogist.co.uk?
I think ancestry is far better. The genealogist has limited indexes for 1841 census returns and some later ones, but they are patchy. Before taking out a subscription make sure the areas you are interested in are covred adequately. Also beware of the all-inclusive subscription - it does not include e...

I have found on the census returns that some inmates of asylums are only recorded by their initials - not the full name. This could be why you have drawn a blank. If you go onto Ancestry and search the 1901 census by entering the place, year of birth and so on but just enter the initals you might fi...

Generic 'In Census' Queries???
If you look in the Downloads, there is one called Census - The Missing Years, I think it is wonderful. It shows names and dates of birth/death then you can see which census returns you have found them on. You can spot gaps and duplicates very quickly. I think the writer of this query is wonderful!

Don't worry - I found the answer by using search. It took me a while to get the hang of it but it is working now.

I also have a double, once at home with wife and family but also visiting his daughter and son-in-law a few streets away. He must have raced the enumerator and won!

Use of Place Names
I tend to write places as village, town, county. Where a county no longer exists e.g. Westmorland I still use that name. Where a county name has changed e.g. Cumbria, I tend to use Cumberland since that is the way it appears on Genuki and the name used for records. In the case of Pakistan I would be...

Edit Gedcom Census
Go into the record of the person you have saved the census source to, go to events, cut it from there and paste it into the events of the correct person. I have done this a few times, it puts the source link in too.

When I first started using FT and GEDCOM, I didn't realise the importance of putting the text in as well as linking to the census image. I want a report that will show me sources and the first line of Text from Source, so I can see which ones have no text in them. Can you point me in the right direc...

I do not use these data types since all of my family are plain English - dead boring! However, since they can be edited through 'Work with data' I was wondering if I could change the description and use them for something else e.g. Military service and keep a list of ranks, battallions etc. At prese...

Ancestry currently has Uk census 1861-1901 inclusive. 1851 is due very soon. There are the usual transcription errors, but with full membership you can see the images (and save them to your hard drive and use GEDCOM to link them to your census info in Family Historian). It also includes Pallot's mar...

I used the custom query and found that while birth sources are there, Record Source is usually missing. What have I done wrong and how do I put them in?

I have been using Custom ID on multimedia objects to define the type, for example photos are church, town or people (it helps me sort them out. 1841 Census and before
http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/newsearch.php This is a pay per view site and it is not complete yet, but certain parts of the county are well covered. However 1841 census can be misleading as parts of what are now Northumberland were then North Durham, e.g. Bedlingtonshire, Norhamshire and Islan...
