The Guardian Guide to Family History
Another excellent thing about Family Historian is the wish list, there is no guarantee that items on it will make it into the program, but by looking at the number of votes it is easy to see what changes most of us want. So many people make a fuss about things in the various forums, agitating for th...

Look at 'Attaching multimedia to a place' on wishlist. If it is what you want vote for it.

I have created a source type 'Location'
e.g. Loc: Lowick,Northumberland. I put information from Gazetteers into the Text part and use the Note at the bottom to enter my own information. I can attach photos and maps to the source.

If the register has been deposited in the Local Record Office you could go there and look at it or a microfilm copy of it.

If they are in the same household I would probably create one entry. If they were next door or on the same page I would create two entries, but put a note in the text box to say they were next door or in the same street as the other family. If they are on the same page you are linking to the same im...

The Guardian Guide to Family History
I have used various programs over the last few years, but this is the best I have come across. Best things: mailing list, this user group, the way it keeps to the GEDCOM standard which makes it easy to swap data with other people. I love the way it is so easy to incorporate photos and copies of cert...

GC Backup
As a user of FH I am far more concerned with my Family History data being saved than I am about someone's idea of 'good programming'. I think my research is of far more importance than someone's idea of how many backups should be made. It is easy to remove old backups it would be impossible to recre...

Sources for multi-media objects
If you check 'Work with Multimedia Objects' you will see that the note is part of the header of each object along with title and date, if you double click on an item from the Multimedia pane it shows you the photo with its title, date and note. The note clearly belongs with the photo.

In Tools, Work with Multimedia, you can select each object and as well as the title you can add a date and note. Why not use that to record the source.

Early Census Release Petition
I agree, it should remain closed for 100 years. Likewise I think graves and headstones should remain in place for at least 100 years - unless they are unsafe. This is a sore point as my great-grandmother (died 1965) has not only had her headstone removed but someone else is buried in her spot. Irene B

I have been using the Custom ID field, but as Jane says you have to type them in over and over. I have types as follows: baptism, birth, marriage, death where I have scanned in the certificate, I also have 'church photo' as well as photo (for people)and 'photo place', census (for saved images). I so...

How to interpret this cause of death
If they didn't have time to register the twins' births would they have been able to register the deaths? You had up to 6 weeks to register a birth.
Alternatively they could have been recorded as 'female' plus surname

Census CDs
I prefer Ancestry to the Genealogist, I find it easier to use and you can easily save the images, then of course you use Nick's excellent gedcom census program and I cut and paste the list of names (from the view details page)into that and link the saved image to it. Also there is the free trial whi...

Before you buy the CDs try a 14 day free trial on Ancestry as it has census 1841 to 1901 for England - also indexed (but sometimes a bit dodgy)

When did paper certificates start?
The oldest certificates I have were passed down by my grandmother. They are on very thin paper - I think it is called onion skin and there is what looks like a postage stamp in the bottom right corner. I would think paper certificates were handed out right from the beginning otherwise people would n...

When you re-ordered the data did you let it re-order the families too? If you mean they are out of order in the records window e.g. you have several people with the same name and you want to sort them by date, first click on 'Dates' at the top of the column to put them in date order, then click on '...

Use of Certificate Binders
I divide them into birth, marriage, death and baptisms (my grandmothers threw nothing away!), then I use the source numbers from FH. I bought some Post-it index tabs and write the number on those rather than directly on to the certificate.

This is free for the month of November. As well as Ellis Island records it includes Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco arrivals plus some Canadian records. When you do a search you can see 'immigration' under census, BMD etc

I think this has been covered before, and I know that I find ancestry.co,uk the best for England & Wales & C.I. as it includes all census 1841-1901 as well as BMD index. It has lots of other bits and pieces and I believe you can get a 2 week free trial. Irene B look for threads about ancestry it mig...
