Family Tree Maker conversion
We use MailBigFile.com in my office for sending stuff that's too big to email sensibly. They offer a free but entirely usable service - you upload to MailBigFile and your intended recipient gets an email from them with a download link in it. (We use the professional version in the office - costs all...

How do you organise sources on your PC
Quite right Lee, surname then given names would sort my census images better. As I explained, my system evolved rather than being worked out properly in advance and I really can't be bothered with redoing it (and renaming the corresponding multimedia and source records)! For certificate images and G...

How do you organise sources on your PC
I'm impressed at the thoroughness of Mike's naming convention. Mine evolved rather than being properly worked out from the beginning. I've deliberately kept mine (relatively) simple to cut down on the amount of typing when I hit the save button on image files. For censuses, I adopt a very basic form...

How do you organise sources on your PC
I have a single folder called sources under the FH media folder. My file naming convention then distinguishes what's what. For example, my maternal grandfather's birth certificate image is bir-1884-08-20-james-duncan-forbes.tif The FH multimedia record has exactly the same name and the short form of...

Nicknames, etc
I just fudge the issue by putting the nickname in brackets after the given names. For instance my paternal grandmother is named as Margaret Gillespie (Peggy) Espie and one of my wife's relatives rather splendidly as Albert George (Whiskers) Cambers.
Not perfect, but it works for me.

Ancestral Sources - Baptisms
In Church of Scotland Old Parish Registers, you sometimes find witnesses listed. The same mechanism that handles godparents would also work here, it's just the text to describe them that would need to be different. (The Church of Scotland doesn't really do godparents, although most ministers welcome...

Ancestral Sources - Baptisms
Legitimacy could be useful. A Catholic Parish Register I have referred to recently actually has a column for legitimacy (recorded as 'legal' or left blank). Would the name of the minister carrying out the baptism be useful too? (The Catholic PR I referred to above has a column for this too.) In addi...
