Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem

Mervyn, I suggest the Research Planner plugin -- both installing it and the Tool tabs (which installs some dynamically created files) which should cover all the bases -- and then Mike's plugin that needs icons. Colin, I suspect I'm stuck at home for 12 months (unless the relevant Birmingham hospital...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem

Worse than I thought because it's something that has to be fixed in code not sticking plaster documentation attempts that cannot handle dynamic downloads -- i.e there isn't a documentation solution for any dynamic downloads (which I suspect are going to be more viable under FH7). It is not rational ...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem

In that case it's worse than I thought, and we need an alternate download mechanism as well as a way of identifying the environment to know which download mechanism to use, as a long term solution. Especially for dynamic files, where human intervention is not possible. Is the socket library a viable...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem

Colin, I (think I) know which pages it's on -- the one you refer to, the page for my plugin (and also within the help file) and the Knowledge Base > Family Historian Program Data Folder page. What I'm trying to say is it must absolutely be on my plugin page (and in the plugin help file -- for issues...

Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem

These points refer to the 17638|Improve Website plugin error thread regarding file downloads. I'm not convinced about Research Planner, or about setting a precedent that other plugins that download stuff need to document the downloads needed in many places, particularly as it makes moving the downlo...

Thanks re Research Planner. Mike, do you want to look into the differences? I use iup for message boxes, and not the fh api function.

Re: Improve Website plugin error

My plugins (MultiFact and Research Planner) use my own standard boilerplate code, not derived from Mike's. Trying those (to determine if they share the same problems or not) might help zero in on the problem causes.

Re: Notify me upon replies option

Whatever we might do relies on users reading something -- either the welcome message, or the screen when they post, or the Please read before posting topic . At some point we have to make the assumption that users will read something, and not take responsibility for nannying them even further if the...

Re: Notify me upon replies option

Mike, Jane is up to her eyeballs with her day job, and other things -- so customising the theme is probably a no-no. Especially as it's not possible to ensure that any customisations she does suit everyone, because screen sizes are so variable. And she's only customising (if I remember rightly) one ...

Where are your media files stored -- within your project? In directories away from your project? And/or somewhere like OneDrive or DropBox? Did anything unusual happen on your PC between yesterday and today (a crsh, a software installation, anything else)? Most importantly, DO NOTHING until we can h...

Re: Old research notes

I don't see any need or value in deleting them -- it's not as if they slow FH down; and if they're marked private they don't show up when you share stuff.

Re: Old research notes

I keep them as it shows the routes to an answer -- if something contradictory turns up unexpectedly I don't have to remember why I chose (e.g.) George Brookes baptised 1835 in Clifton-cum-Glapton rather than George Brookes birth register 1837 in Long Eaton. If somebody asks me how I made a judgement...

Re: How to find/resolve 'Name conflict with an existing file'

Let's be clear -- the vast majority of plugins are written by Jane Taubman or Mike Tate; and almost all plugins are supported by their authors. (I know I put a lot of effort into supporting mine).

Re: Adding notes to Named List

It is not obvious, but the unlabelled white box below the Named List is a local Note for the selected Individual.
So you can type anything into that box that is relevant to the selected record in the Named List.
Those Notes are entirely local to each entry in the Named List.
So, what I said then...

Re: Adding notes to Named List

You can create a Shared Note (aka Note Record) linked to an individual and add that to a Named List, just as you add any other record). From within the Named List, you'd right click on the individual, choose properties to bring up the Property Box and add a Shared Note on the Notes tab. I don't do i...

Re: Notify me upon replies option

Emails are a particular problem -- or rather sending emails without active consent. I think that's why Jane discontinued the FHUG mailing list (not the groups.io one, but the one that used to be associated with this site).

Just a thought, but I wonder if it is legal to sign people up for emails without seeking their active consent first? From my reading pre-ticked boxes aren't valid any more.
