Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

I've been thinking about this and I'd be interested in seeing some of these threads where people ask a basic beginners question and then someone answers it in an unnecessarily 'techie' way. Have a look down the 'General Usage' forum and find the conversations where that happens. I've looked through...

BTW I am very happy to see you on here. I was very concerned I wouldn't. I didn't have to ask because I was following the forum to see if you popped back on.
Thanks. Almost 12 months to the day after my transplant, I'm thriving.

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

To be fair, Mark, Mxy could be searching the forums and finding answers that don't help them. You don't have to ask questions to be unhappy with the answers. So if the answers he finds don't help, why hasn't he asked his own questions? Lack of confidence that the answers he'll get will be any better?

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

I note that Mxy's previous posting before today was in the summer of 2021. You're not asking questions, so how can you complain about the answers...? Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?

I would like to work on genealogy, instead I find myself working on Family Historian. I can't find answers to questions in the knowledge base because, as another mentioned, I can't figure out the key words. I end up here and exactly as you say it is mostly techie. It seems I start with 3rd level su...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Note, the removal of the 'shadow topic' is a manual operation by the mods (we can automate it, but haven't). It's a toss-up between convenience for the people who've bookmarked it, versus clutter in the topics list and/or leading people to believe that topic X is acceptable when it belongs elsewhere.

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Helen, If I bookmark a thread and then it is moved to another forum or subform does the bookmark change to this new location? This is not a problem, I am just curious. Thanks, Bill I believe the topic retains the same topic number (the p=137090 part of the url for this post) but the forum number wi...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

Helen's explanation of moving threads answers my concern about saved URLs - but only for about a week. If I save a URL, it's with a view to long term usage. Wouldn't the indicator that it had been moved prompt you to modify your bookmark? If some of these ideas are implemented, particularly moving ...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

One issue that does concern me is help new or less regular readers to understand where their post is moved to - if moving is to become more frequent? When we move a topic we leave a 'shadow topic' behind - essentially the topic shows up for (say) a week in the list of topics in the old forum but if...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums

I have a bookmark in my browser to the URL for Unread Posts which I use at least once a day. However it brings up all the Sub Forums, some of which I have no interest in reading. The only way I have found to remove these is to open the topic and then refresh the list of unread posts by using the br...

Re: Question re: usage of Census, Residence and Occupation

Adrian; I believe you mentioned that you used all three tags; Census, Occupation and Residence. Could you elaborate on why you use both Census and Residence? Not Adrian, but my answer is: Because there are sources which do give me direct evidence of Residence that aren't census sources. UK domestic...

Re: Question re: usage of Census, Residence and Occupation

Typically, you would only create either a Census event or a Residence event for an individual from a Census record, plus an Occupation. I prefer Census because (a) you can't be sure that somebody's location on census night is their residence; and (b) most plugins, queries, etc. to interrogate census...

Re: RM7 -> FH7, lost some citation formatting, other citation questions

Fair point about the Data field.

By a note field, I mean a Local Note for the Source.

Yes, re Bibliography, if you do it at all.

It doesn't sound that complex a process, with the right functions defined, but don't do it fo rme -- wait for somebody who really needs it.

Re: RM7 -> FH7, lost some citation formatting, other citation questions

In my experience, the Short Footnote is not usually very significant or widely used. I find it very useful, Mike. But is that in the context of exporting to other products as being discussed here? If my recollection is correct, it was you who requested the Metafield Reformat option to export the Fo...
