Re: Query and Plugin Result Sets
Mike should reopen the wish list, amended to reflect what has already been done and what is outstanding (possibly woith an amended title).

Re: Query and Plugin Result Sets
Oh! Perhaps you meant just the three people who have contributed to this thread. Well clearly not, otherwise we would not be posting here for a Wish List entry! Four of you actually, if we're being pedantic. And because I'm clearly not being clear enough for you, Mike: Why doesn't one of you raise ...

Re: Wish list item 520 (name types)
The Wish List request isn't closed; items are moved from New Wish List Requests to Closed Wish List Requests when they have either been created on the Wish List or deemed unnecessary/lacking support/a duplicate.

Where do I ask my question?
We have introduced a number of subject-specific forums to make it easier for people to find content they want to see (and avoid content they don't want to see). If your question relates to one of the sub-forum subjects, please ask it in the corresponding sub-forum, otherwise ask in the main General ...

Forum Changes
The sharp-eyed among you will have noticed that I have implemented the subject-specific sub-forums and forum changes that we've been discussing. Please can we let this bed in for several months to see how well it works before we embark on further changes.

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
Likewise you don’t need to know much (anything?) about Gedcom to learn how to use FH. Many users just want to know how to do something in FH. But some, particularly those migrating from other software whose ‘cars’ behave differently, want to learn what lies underneath. If the user is happy with an ...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
The trouble with the separate sub-forum for "Philosophical musings" is that's not how they generally originate... Someone asks about citations, say, someone else then mentions Elizabeth Shown Mills and then we're into the philosophy of citations and what did the GEDCOM committee really mean when......

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
Interesting reading Helen’s comment, which came in as I was composing mine. Do we have two different forums? Helping general users with the mechanics of FH, and a much more loosely defined discussion forum? There is room for both, but it is the mixing up of the two that seems to create tensions and...

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
I think there needs to be a decision as to whether this forum is just for asking questions and getting responses or whether people are allowed to have discussions about things which are perhaps more technical in nature and perhaps do ramble on and will only be of interest to a minority of the users...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Must admit I had been tempted to respond to Helen's post about the revised forum groupings to say that a separate "Gedcom" forum really needs to be included - some of the recent discussions which have degenerated into disagreements about the meaning of certain words in the Gedcom specs really are o...

Re: Edit of Marriage record
Do we know exactly what the source in question is?
Is it the original church register, a copy from the local Register Office or a copy from the GRO? Knowing at which point in the chain the text was added would be interesting.
Answering my own question, it looks to be the original Parish Register.

Re: Proposed Changes to the Forums
If I'm reading the room right: There is broad support for the objective of helping users who don't want to see so many 'technical'/'specialist' posts (however an individual defines those classes of post). There's broad support for the proposed sub-forums within the General Usage forum. There's broad...

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
I don't think this discussion (which will never result in agreement) is helping the OP at all. Start a new topic and move the Gedcom discussion there?

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
Lorna; Much as I hate quoting Evidence Explained , to me, it makes one reasonable point about the subject of citation; "we cite what we see". Yes, but that's in the context of not citing an original parish register (say) when what we've actually seen is a derivative (be it image, or transcription)....

Re: What is an objective definition of "Splitting"?
If this is the case, then it would appear that "splitting", in its purest sense, would document a page in the citation-portion and the containing document in the source portion. That would imply that "Splitters" would provide the page reference, attach the page image and enter the page text into th...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
I accept responsibility for the posting you mentioned which should have been moved and I can do that now. So we seem to be agreeing that the new forum structure won't make much difference unless we enforce stricter rules for moving postings to their ideal forum. Stating the obvious, surely, Mike?

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Helen; I note that you've used FH for quite a few years I still have version 2 around somewhere, and anyone who remembers my old ID can probably find posts going back before my current incarnation -- however, like Jean001, I lurked for long time because I am constitutionally averse to customisation...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Gary, For newcomers to FH and genealogy at the same time, its not an impossible task to come up with a simple example workflow although there would still be questions about souce driven data entry versus fact driven. We could probably avoid the lumper versus splitter debate by defaulting to the Esse...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
Someone mentioned a zoom group to address the need. https://fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=21810&start=25#p137067 The Zoom group is a great idea, for somebody who learns that way, but doesn't obviate the need for us look at what we can do to make FHUG more friendly for newcomers/non techies...

Re: Is it time to split the General Forum?
I've been thinking about this and I'd be interested in seeing some of these threads where people ask a basic beginners question and then someone answers it in an unnecessarily 'techie' way. Have a look down the 'General Usage' forum and find the conversations where that happens. I've looked through...
