If the current moderators are unable to maintain the list along with all their other selfless commitments to FH, don't we either need a different process or more delegation...?
Difficult to delegate without volunteers to be delegated to :(

I notice this still isn't marked as completed in the wish list - is there some aspect of the request I've missed that is still outstanding?

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

I was wondering about recasting it not as a comparison but as a set of considerations when deciding whether to split or lump an individual source/source type.

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

This has been a discussion in taxonomy for many years. Wikipedia say: Lumpers and splitters are opposing factions in any discipline that has to place individual examples into rigorously defined categories. The lumper–splitter problem occurs when there is the desire to create classifications and ass...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

I think one problem with the existing KB article on Method1/Splitting and Method 2/Lumping is that, as it says, the examples “are based on using ƒh6 or ƒh7 with Generic Sources, but the principles apply to all versions of ƒh and all kinds of Sources.” What it doesn’t say is that before V7, when all...

I think this makes sense, but perhaps the first time these are explained/used in the article add a comment such as "referred to as 'Method 1' by some Family Historian users"
OK.

Sounds fine to me except I'm slightly concerned by the reference to "data" here. I wrote the output Citation = Data from the Source-recor...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

OK - sticking my head into the lion's jaw (and / or lioness's? ;) ) Thanks, Adrian. That's a good basis for updating Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for New Users) (with a bit of wordsmithing to get the tone to match); Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 can then be modified to refer readers ...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

A common language must be created so the reader does not misunderstand the documentation. And all terms must be used consistently (based on definition) in the documentation. Something not always done in the software! If we use language that differs from that used in the FH documentation, we'll only...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

The description of genealogy document Sources & Citations versus FH/GEDCOM data storage Sources & Citations is blurred. Which is the nub of the problem -- the same words are used for different things, distinguished only by context. FH itself uses 'Sources' and 'Citations' for the storage entities, ...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

A source is the “Source_Record” (a GEDCOM term) plus the “Source_Citation” (a GEDCOM term) but referred to by FH as a “citation”. In the context of this article, which is talking about how to organise information about sources within FH, I would say: Source = the thing that was consulted (book, rec...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

Adrian, does it help to consider that the citation structure in GEDCOM includes a pointer to the source record? So

Citation (the tab) = Source Record + Citation-specific Details

is about right.

Ok, so again I've stepped into an area that I should not have! My bad. I'll limit my interaction to my own questions regarding FH. Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

On a more general point, we're in danger of rerunning the discussion about 'splitters versus lumpers' and how to decide which you are, and that is based on a fallacious assumption that the two are totally distinct, whereas in fact everyone is a mixture of both; they make the decision on a per-source...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

Just quickly correcting a misconception: In GEDCOM the "Source_Citation" structure (for use when "Source_Records" are used) which I assume is the same as the FH term "Source-Citation-Details" has the following field definitions: Where_In_Source, Entry_Recording_Date, Test_From_Source, Multimedia, Ce...

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

In the academic world, as quoted (uncited :) ) by KFN, A “citation” is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find the location details of that source on the reference or Works Cited page. Eve...

Have you tried adjusting your mouse pointers?

It was called Marina. 14 people were using it out of several thousand registered users (so quite possibly less than 14 active users), and it doubled the admin workload involved in making changes to the forums layout etc. So no, it won't be making a comeback.

Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

I didn't just propose a blanket replacement of Citation by Citation-Specific-Detail - that would have been quite wrong. I'm not convinced any of the references in that table to Citation should be replaced by Citation-Specific-Detail; the table is talking about 'storage objects' (to coin a phrase to...

How clever can the ORA auto type script be at invoking FH commands and buttons? There is the View > Go To > Back command which is the same as the white Go Back arrow in the Property Box. Re: Citing Sources: Method 1 and Method 2 - comparison table tweaks

FYI: The term Citation-Specific was added in FH V7.0 but only applies to Templated Sources . If you add a Citation to an existing Fact for a New Generic Source, you'll see that Citation Specific Details is used for Generic Sources as well. So whatever wording is used in the KB it must be consistent...
