Formatting of D by G Narrative Report
I just did some experimenting and did the following: Saved as .rtf, then saved as .txt and then saved as .doc. That's kind of the long hard way but the format looks better in the .doc. Then I saved it as a PDF file and it is exactly as you originated it in FH. Perhaps that is what you are looking f...

Thanks to Nick for expanding on, and answering some of my questions. I really appreciate it. I am far below the technical level of most who post here but have gained a lot from this user group. I'm sure there will be many more answers that I will find here as I 'convert' to FH 4. Yes, I KNOW that J...

More questions before I begin to utilize my now ONLY version of FH .4. Tim said: 'Would think the reason, apart from keeping registry simple, is because if you double click on a GEDCOM file will open up FH. How is it supoosed to know which version you want to open it with. As only one will be defaul...

Me again - sorry. Nick said 'I'm not sure what kind of benefit you think you'll get from having both versions installed.' The benefit to me is to be able to review, without putting them in my prime program, gedcoms that I download that may have some relevance to my line of research. I would not need...

Thank you Jane for your prompt answer to the 'no more than one version' of FH. I did just check the Family Historian website and now realize that it did say previous versions would be upgraded. My initial impetus and interest was, after having reviewed the new features on v4, I felt it would better...

[confused][mad] Long story here - bear with me. 1. I ordered on March 5th the FULL Version 4. 2. Read all the good, bad, unsure, questions, answers, compliments, etc. re v. 4 on these posts since my order. Except for comments on areas that I will probably not use - or know how to at this point - al...

Add a BIG cheer and round of applause from me also. Jane is always on top of the questions and problems. Her help saves us a lot of time - wish we could give it back in sleep hours for Jane - I'm sure she could use a few extra!

As one who has been/still am eagerly awaiting my copy of the full v4 - which hopefully will arrive here in the US by tomorrow, I have been tracking all the comments, suggestions and ? complaints on v4 usage. Now that I've seen the problems with downloading the upgrade and the problems with the free trial, I'm becoming a bit concerned - and, after my excitement of hopefully receiving my full version SOON. Can Jane again reassure us that the full version is error free; CDs tested and all of that? HELP![co...

I think the review that you mentioned had some valid points about FH being more technically sophisticated rather than being intuitive. [Jane, don't chastise me too severely.] However, the BETTER news is that, from what I know of other programs, FH has THE BEST capability for queries - that is you ca...

Thanks Jon for the reply. That works to change the date format. While I have owned FH for almost two years, I haven't used it as the primary software program for my genealogy research as I do not find the initial data entry to be as easy as Family Treemaker which I have used for several years. I d...

From my question regarding US date format for FH, Jane suggested: You should be able to enter dates in the format mm/dd/yyyy if you go to regional and language settings in the Control Panel and click the 'Customize Regional Options' and set the Short Date format to MM/dd/yyyy. Very importantly, you...

Just another couple of questions: Does anyone know if in v.4 there will be a way to input dates AND have them displayed in US format, i.e. month/day/year. Had this question re v.3.1 and the answer there is NO- it converts the month/day/year to day/month/year when pulling in a gedcom from another pr...

I have FH v. 3.1 and am eagerly awaiting v. 4. Does anyone know if [a] the queries that I have downloaded will be included in v. 4 or if not, whether they will automatically be pulled into v.4? My instinct is to get the full version 4. Sometimes over writes can do strange things to some files. Any...

Hi Jane,
Wow, that did the trick. Both of those queries delivered exactly what I wanted. And, now, thankfully I won't have to bungle along any more. It's great to have so much flexibility in search features.
Thanks again so much.

Hi Jane, Thanks for your reply. Actually, one of each would be nice. Here's an example of what I was looking for [searched the long way, obviously] Sherwood, Thomas Turney, Ann Sherwood, Stephen Turney, Rebecca Sherwood, Matthew Turney, Sarah The above is a set of brothers of one family marryi...

Surname 1 marries Surname 2
In my early Connecticut families, my prime line often married into the same surnames, i.e. Sherwoods m. Burrs. Later generations had other combinations. I would like a query that would give me these combinations. I've downloaded a number of custom queries [not smart enough to make my own] and test...

OK, so now I think I GET it. I ASSUMED that by choosing US and the mm/dd/yy format in the file/save area that dates would be DISPLAYED in that format. So, it takes me a while. Thanks to all for your help and patience. Still wish that were the case. My daughter stopped by and was able to get the d...

Perhaps there is something in how Family Treemaker, converts its files to a gedcom. It does say it uses 5.5 format. I also don't know how to view a gedcom with a text editor. I did see somewhere a person who had done the 'choose US' in FH and it apparently worked for him so that his dates came thro...

Date Format - U.S. Customary
I have used Family Treemaker for my 7 years of genealogy research - current version FT 16. All dates in that program are displayed in US customary format, i.e. Jan 1988, Jan 2, 1988, Abt. 1988, Before 1988, After 1988, etc. unless otherwise originally written in a different format. All of the full...

Thanks for the thought. I've checked all the Windows XP settings and they are ALL standard for the US - dollars, decimal points, time, long and short date formats, etc. It doesn't appear that has any impact at all. ALL the dates that come through the gedcom have the 8 Mar 1731 - 25 Apr 1802 format...

Date Format - U.S. Customary
Since I live in the US, my computer has always had the setting for here. Just checked - it's OK. My point is that the option on the preferences tab does NOT change the format from dd/mm/yy to mm/dd/yy - whether I select that before or after I import my gedcom. Having the International setting at E...

Date Format - U.S. Customary
I'm a bit frustrated since I am unable to get the date format mm/dd/yy to activate in my newly purchased, latest version of Family Historian. While the preferences clearly give the option of date format for the U.S. - and yes, I said 'apply' - it doesn't work. Is it my problem or is it a flaw in the...
