Hear Hear!!
Probably not the first person to think of this, but could AS become a V5+ plug-in .... ?? Of course, I'm creating Nick a maintenance headache, with the need to retain a stand-alone version as well, for compatibility with V1-4.

Quotation marks around dates
John: unfortunately not. The dates inside quotation marks are known as a 'Date Phrase' and are held as character strings which FH doesn't attempt to interpret as a formatted date (cf your more recent dates, entered as dates) unless you provide an interpretation manually. This form is used to record...

AS2 - Census menu icon
I know, really picky ... but - the Census menu icon has the word 'Census' next to it, whereas the other icons (currently Baptism is the only other 'live' one) don't. Would look better if they were all the same? For preference, I'd lose the text fro the 'Census' icon. The tooltip/alt text tells you w...

It's worth taking a look at Notepad++, too. It also has powerful search/replace functions, including Regular Expressions.

I wish someone had told me . . . When I started
Brian1950's numbers 1,2,3 and 7 say it all for me! I was at least fortunate to start my research only after FH had just been launched. I would also add 'make sure that relatives know the genealogical value of anything they have tucked away at home'. I really, really, really wish my late Aunt had no...

Enhancing Photos
You will also find that Photoshop may give you more control over levels, contrast etc. if you take photos in 'raw' format, rather than the camera default, which is invariably jpeg. You can save a raw file as a jpeg or other format once you have the processed image you require. The downside is that...

Inconsistent use of Project/File in File menu?
OK, I know these are trivial, but anyway ... When AS is initially run up, 'Current File is default' is greyed out. If I then open a Project, the text becomes bold, but remains as 'Current FILE is default'. But at this stage AS already knows it has a Project .... If I then tick 'Current file is def...

DoB calculation from Census Age
AS (like GC before it) can calculate and create BIRT events based on the stated age in the census. For UK censuses (Leave aside UK 1841 for the moment) age is given either in whole months (up to 11) or otherwise in whole years. So someone aged 9yrs in the 1851 census (taken on 30th March 1851) could...

list all people from one village
Strictly speaking that query does more than the OP wants, as it finds all individuals with any one of several major life events (Birth, Baptism, Marriage, Death, Burial) occurring in the entered place. For individuals who originate (i.e. are born in) a particular Place, all that's really needed is t...

Improve Flag-sharing dialogue
Having played with the dialogue a bit further I'd also like to see the ability to define new shared flags in this dialogue. That would be very useful, for example, when setting up a new FH environment; one could then predefine all the standard shared flags in one dialogue even before any FH data had...

Improve Flag-sharing dialogue
The ability to share flags between projects/gedcoms is great (something I was doing manually until very very recently ... i.e. tonight!). But it would make the sharing of flags simpler if FH provided a dialogue that permitted multiple flags to be set to 'shared' in one go, rather than having to go i...

Having not managed to find time to do much FH since V4 came out, I had missed the fact that this change had been included, so thanks for pointing it out, Robin. And Simon for including it! Having now played briefly with the new feature, existing flags are shared simply by selecting them (one at a t...

Flags
AS looks fantastic. Great work. The comments on Flag TAG length raises the question whethe there is also a specific limit on the length of the flag name? The reason I'm asking is that I have pre-defined my flags, including my Census flags, by editing the flags.fha file in FH settings (having backed ...

GC6.0.6 and ACTIVflipchartviewer?
I ran up GC this morning for the first time in some while, to be greeted by a message that says it's trying to configure an application called ACTIVflipchart viewer. Is this a component of GC?; I can find no mention of it in the help. In case it might be, I downloaded the GC6.0.6 installation packag...

Gedcom census flags
If you did it exactly i the order you describe, then I suspect Gedcom Census will have set up an association between the flag and the census date, but not actually applied the flag to the census record previously entered. Check in Gedcom Census (Tools>Census Flags) that you have the 'Automatically r...

Data - Entry Date grammar
When adding Data to a Source link, if a full date is entered into the 'Entry Date' field, the resulting text is 'Data entered in 26 January 2009', which is obviously clumsy (not to say wrong!). It's OK where, for example quarter dates, months & years etc, are entered, but most people, I suspect, ent...

The Property dialog cannot be resized in V3 and earlier. In V4 The main Property Box (for data entry) has been reworked so that it too is now easier than ever to use. Users can configure its appearance, customize it, move it, resize it, or dock it to the side of the application window. See http:...
