Printing a list of individuals
Jennifer, Just had another idea. You could use one of the built-in Queries - All Individuals. This is read-only but you can save it as a custom query and then play around with the fields until you get what you want. You can save the result as .csv (which can be loaded into any spreadsheet) or .txt (...

Printing a list of individuals
Jennifer, You could create a List which includes everyone and then use: Reports>Miscellaneous Reports>List Report - selecting the List you want. By default the report seems to appear in alphabetical order by Surname and then First Name. It also shows birth/death dates. There doesn't seem to be much ...

Val, It is usually possible to determine the birth date (or at least the birth year) from later information such as the Census, Marriages and death or burial records. Even if the information isn't explicit then words such as 'infant', or 'of full age' etc in later records give a clue or perhaps a da...

How To View All People In A Tree
Peter, Try View>Standard Diagrams>Everyone. In FH you can insert a date such as Q4 1850 in a date field and it will accept it. Alternatively use the Date Entry Assistant by clicking on the button with three small dots on the right hand side of the date field. This will allow you to do the same. Gerry

finding 'lost' websites via Google
A postscript - the archived web site will give you the Batch Numbers for each parish but clicking on the link won't work with the archived version of the site. However, when you have found the Batch Number you want, go to: http://www.familysearch.org.uk and using the Advanced Search, select the Int...

Yes, I was just about to show someone how to use Hugh Wallis's web pages when I discovered the site was down. However, you can still get to it via:
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
by putting in the old link:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/
Works a treat!

Having just slagged off Legacy, I have to admit that I am using GRAMPS on my new Acer Aspire which uses the Linpus version of Linux. It can import .ged files but uses its own file format. It has some nice features but some of them crash the computer. Oh well, it is freeware. If you want to check it ...

Exporting FH file to Legacy
FH uses a .ged file format. I expect Legacy will be able to import that with no intermediate conversion.
(Though why you would want to use Legacy instead of FH beats me!)

I have AVG 8 - the paid for version - and am very content with it. It did slow things down until I discovered that it was doing a full scan every day. I changed that to once a week and so 6 days out of 7 everything works fine. It certainly beats Norton - which I used to recommend (!) - but which lat...

Scottish source citations HELP!
As you are using Scottish Records I would use the citations on Scotlands People. Most of the records on Ancestry are 'second-hand' in the sense that Ancestry bought the right to use them but don't own them.

Dead End help please or opinions......
FreeBMD reports 100% coverage of deaths for 1897 so he must be there somewhere. Sometimes names are added in manuscript to the bottom of the page and can be missed. Also, if the death was near the end of a quarter it might be in the following quarter.
Good luck,
Gerry

Chris,
I will add my vote but I think more recent versions of the Gedcom standard (than 5.5) do allow for Civil Partnership/Same-Sex Unions etc.

As I couldn't find anthying in the Wish List covering the various versions of Gedcom, I have added one to allow the option to use more recent versions than 5.5, with a option to save the file in version 5.5 for compatability.

Jane,
Very many thanks for the time you have spent answering my query. The version you have produced is getting close to what I want and I can work on it to fit in some of the large families I am dealing with.
Regards,
Gerry

Jane & Nick, Thanks. Jan,
Thanks - I didn't know such maps were available at TNA.
Alan Godfrey Maps have quite a good range but don't yet cover the area I am interested in.

Hi Jane, I'm using the 'Record Details - Families' report because it gives me the layout I want on a single sheet. The only thing it shows that I don't want is sources. I was editing the .fhr file because the Options button doesn't give me access to switch off the details I don't want. The Family Gr...

I am trying to create a Custom Report based on 'Record Detail - Families'. I have managed to save it as a custom report but I don't need any Sources to be shown as all I want is a summary sheet. Enumerators do help........Sometimes
Chris,
I was actually trying to produce a map of the Ennumeration Districts for Gillingham, Kent using the descriptions at the start of each District. In 1881 there are more than 23 ennumeration districts for Gillingham but trying to fit them all together is no mean task!

On the question of maps, does anyone know if there are maps of the ennumeration districts? I tried to draw up one from the description of the various ennumeration districts in an urban area but found it was quite difficult due to renaming of streets, new streets, old streets being demolished etc. Re...

International character sets available?
In Windows XP you could try the Character Map in Accessories>System Tools, although it is a little bit cumbersome to use. However, it also gives the shortcut keys for certain characters and the ALT+[4 digit Unicode number] for each character. This works well if you are going to use the same characte...
