Missing death record
Another thought - did he change his name? If it was registered you might find it online at the London Gazette.

Missing death record
Hi vpfz,
Have you checked if he emigrated?
Have you checked for a military or naval service record? (at Kew - not online yet for the period before 1914, afaik)

Congratulations, Simon
My V4 upgrade arrived by post yesterday and I installed it over my upgraded V3 with absolutely no problems. With some trepidation I created a new project for my Gedcom file. However, I neednt have worried as it has faithfully reproduced my carefully thought out directory system holding in excess of...

It is now the blue triangle on the button bar of the Property Box - hovering the cursor over it shows 'Up'.

JonAxtell said: As to why the export and split tree are different, I blame it one on of FH's main failings - lack of orthogonality/consistency. Jon, If you think FH is so bad, why do you continue to use it? Whilst you may have a point, I think your frequent 'FH-bashing' is extremely negative and il...

And I would also like to add my thanks to Nick for his fantastic software and recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet downloaded it.

I think you have to keep things in perspective. How does the sub for Ancestry compare with other expenditure on youself and your leisure activities? If family history is your main hobby and if Ancestry is the right web site for the records you need then their charges are still reasonable. You also n...

Pre 1841 Census
There are quite a lot of them, although the information recorded varies from numbers only to something akin to the 1841 census.
Try Googling 'pre-1841 census' for a selection of what is available.

Jan, You have to be quite imaginative when searching the census records. It has even been know for names to be turned around so that John Smith becomes Smith John - ie Forename Smith, family name John. I don't know whether it is true but I believe the surname Ditto is quite common! Spelling can be v...

evaluating websites -- where to subscribe?
I am missing some 1851 Census records. I decided to check FindMyPast again to see if they might have a better index than Ancestry or had records that Ancestry might have missed out on. Nope, still incomplete. Jan, Large parts of the 1851 Census covering Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk and Dors...

'If visiting the National Archives, any _TNA_ owned records that have been digitised - e.g. English censuses, probate, non-conformist RG4 records etc are available on the PCs at Kew free of charge, (you just pay the standard copying fee for for any printouts you make).' You might want to check out this review: http://www.genealogyreviews.co.uk/fhmMay07_atlas.htm especially the comments: 'The other problem is that the UK counties used are given the post-1974 administrative authority names and boundaries, whereas most family historians probably use the historic count...

Ability to change event
I'm not sure this is a good idea. If you have customised events etc how will FH know where the data is supposed to go when you change the event? A residential attribute isn't really much like an occupation attribute, although they may have some common data. Are we trying to get FH to be too clever? ...

Another point in favour of Ancestry is the agreement with LMA to digitise all the parish records for London - they should start to come on-line this year.

Jane,
Thanks for the correction. It was a tip I gleaned from the internet some while ago. It makes the presentation of names consistent and works fine in FH. As everyone I know about so far has their forename before their surname then it works OK for me.

I stuck with Ancestry as it has all the census records I need, including UK and USA and lots else besides. Apparently, gedcom ignores anything after a closing '/' so I find the following works well for me. If I enter: Mary//[Spouse of John Smith] FH resolves this as: Mary // [Spouse of John Smith] All these entries are listed first alphabetically and so it is easy to find them when I need to add addition...

I've just downloaded the latest version but I still get an error message when I try to run the Excel macro. I wonder if the problem is that I am not saving the query result in the correct format. The instructions say save as a tab delimited text file. There doesn't seem to be an option to do this in...
