Not necesarily the 'official' way to do it but I would create a new spouse for the mother ('Unknown' and marriage status 'Unmarried Couple' or 'Unknown'), unlink the child from the first set of parents and the re-link to the new set.
I would be interested to know if there is a better way.

Keywords
Jane,
Thanks very much. I've given it a trial and now I will do it for real! Seems to do the job but requires a few manual tweaks. For example, where I have mixed media in one folder: such as all the photos and miscellaneous docs for one person. However, it saves an awful lot of work.

Jane,
Thanks for your offer. I have over 1000 multimedia records so I would very much appreciate a quick way to append keywords.

Is there a way to add Keywords to batches of multimedia rather than individually?

Brian, I think you will find that, by default, FH stores the name as you enter it; ie DeRomana, but displays it DEROMANA. You can check this in the Properties for the individual. To get the name displayed 'correctly' in diagrams you need to edit the Text Scheme. Display the diagram you want; click ...

Can you include relationship to root in a query?
Click on the Columns tab. In the Heading field type 'Relationship to Root' (without the quotes!) and in the Expression field type:
=Relationship(FileRoot(),,TEXT,1)
(Best to copy and paste to ensure you get the text correct)
Then click the Add button and Run the query.

Where do I enter cause of death now?
In the Focus window with the Properties for the individual showing click on the Facts Tab and either enter a new Fact - Death - of, if it already exists, click on the Fact and there is a place to enter the Cause.

Moving A Child
Sue,
I find it is easier to link the child to the new parents rather than the parents to the child: ie display the new parents in the Focus window and click on Add Child. The select 'Link Existing Record'
(Hope that makes sense!)

I would have thought it was your own name so that the software can be identified to you. However, you may want to try Family Historian support at:

Adding media
Peter,
It does look as if FH4 defaults to the last folder used, regardless of the project so I would also like a solution!

Could the problem be that the picture/video or whatever media you are using should be in the Media folder of the project .fh_data folder and not in the Public folder?

Nick,
Thanks for the clarification - I'm at the limit of my understanding of the Gedcom standard! Your point about using a custom fact is well made.

'Mailing list' / Contact details
Karen, I hope my explanation didn't cause any confusion. I don't think there is an Address attribute as such - it is part of the Residence Attribute, as in the Reference: INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.ADR1 So when you create the new Tab (which you can call anything you like: Address; Residence; Contacts etc) t...

I should point out that there is a 'gotcha' with creating an Address tab as I described earlier. If you use INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.ADR1 it will show the first Residence Fact (Attribute) which may not be the same as the current address. In order to get round this you need to create a dummy Residence Fact ...

Karen,
That one is too technical for me! If it will help, the Property Box I used is at the level of one individual but you could try creating the extra address tab at the Family level. Go to the Families Tab in Family Records and see if it works there.

I have created a new Tab on the Property Box and used: INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.ADR1 INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.ADR2 INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.CITY INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.STAE INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.POST INDI.RESI[1].ADDR.CTRY and you could add any other fields that you like! You do have to fill in the fields individually unless the...

Just a quick note to thank Jane for the new How Tos for Version 4. Very useful and an excellent way to present concepts that can be difficult to put into print.
