V4 Charts - missing expansion buttons

You should be able to turn them on and off using the 'Expansion Buttons' on the Button bar.

Grave headstones as a source

Jon, Sorry, but I don't think that a source can change from Primary to Secondary (or vice versa) just because later information is more accurate. It is the character of the source (ie how close to the person) that determines the status (ie primary, secondary etc). On several occasions inaccurate inf...

Grave headstones as a source

No record is 100% reliable but I would regard a gravestone as primary evidence, along with BMD Certificates, Baptism and Burial entries in Parish Registers, official records such at the London Gazette and Census records etc. Secondary evidence includes transcripts and indexes, such as the BVI, FreeB...

Finding a specific individual

I don't know if this is any help but if you click on the Ancestors or Descendants tabs in the Focus window you can then select anyone listed by clicking on the little magnifying glass beside their name and they then become the main person in the Focus window.

recommended diagrham / reports for initial contact

Hi Fergus, First of all V4 has its own pdf printer driver so you don't need to install a separate one just to produce FH reports etc in pdf format. Second, the first report I send is usually an outline Descendant or Ancestor Report in pdf format. This is a fairly compact report that has all the basi...

FactValue and Residences

Would it not be possible to allow the output to depend on a value so that the user could specify what was required?

=FactValue(%FACT%,0) might output a default value and =FactValue(%FACT%,1) might output a sentence; etc.

Merge christening and baptism?

One way is to edit the GEDCOM file to change all the CHRI to BAPT. (At least I think Gedcom uses CHRI for Christening.) I don't think you can do this within FH4 unless there is a way using a Query. You should be able to use Notepad to do the editing if you don't have a text editor. But don't use Wor...

Group photos

I want to add names to large group photos and understand some software allows you to hover the mouse over the person and read the name.
Picasa v3 can do this. You can get it free from Google.

Printing a Multimedia Item

Jane, Thanks for the tip - I hadn't thought about .tif images which, of course, can be multi page. I really don't want to produce separate images for each page of multi-page documents, some of which (such as directories and court reports) run to 20 pages or more. But FH only seems to display and pri...

Printing a Multimedia Item

Thanks, Jane, but that doesn't help if I want to print the non-graphic media file as part of a FH report. For example, I have some trial reports in pdf format that give useful ancestral information not otherwise available (eg place of birth, age, marital status etc). It would be great if these could...

That only seems to work for graphics files (jpg/tif etc). Is it possible to print a .pdf, .doc or other sort of file from within FH?

';Work in progress/Query'; flag

I don't think you can add a flag to a family.

You could, however, used named lists - something like 'Work in Progress - Family' or 'Work in Progress - Individual'. Then just add a local note to the family or individual record recording what work need to be done.

Sorry if I haven't understood you request but you don't need a program to download Ancestry images. With the image displayed click on the Save button and you should get the following: http://www.fhug.rjt.org.uk/images/uploads/Clipboard0111.jpg Select Save this image and click Continue to choose the ...

It might be a memory problem. If I double-click on one of the images listed under 'Records on this page' on the side bar I get an out of memory message.

Sounds as if you might have a problem with your Gedcom file. Try loading it into FH and then do a File>Validate.

Did you try the second method - chose one family then Edit>Merge/Compare records?

You can select the second family with CTRL Left Click or select one, go to Edit>Merge/Compare and then select the second family.

I don't advise just deleting one family. You may end up with un-intended orphans!

If you always backup the file at the end of each session (as I do!) do you need to start a new file each month or is there a special reason for doing it that way? If you don't have backup enabled go to Tools>Preferences and select the Backup tab. Make sure that 'Prompt for Backup on Exit' is checked...

Marriage date with no spouse not saved

For me (V4.0.2) it only arises if there is already a child but only one parent. The Marriage Date and Place boxes display but anything typed in them is lost. Quite logical really - if you are married you must be married to someone so I would expect to enter their name before entering the marriage da...

Custom Reports (combined Query/Report)

I'd vote for that. I wonder if there is scope here for someone to write a separate program - a sort of Gedcom Census (if Nick doesn't mind me using the name of his excellent programme)  only for writing Reports. The program could be developed alongside FH and not hinder the development of the main p...

Nick Walker said: ... So rather than having a flag called '1881 UK Census' applied to each individual it would be a list called '1881 UK Census' with each individual a part of that list. I have some photos of old gravestones but the writing is very difficult to make out.

Can anyone advise, please, if it is possible to enhance the images with software and how to go about it?
