Has anyone had any experience of trying V4 under any varieties of Linux ?

Mutilple GEDCOMS vs single GEDCOM
Thanks Jane,
You have put my mind at rest, I will just add them to main GEDCOM. Only up to about 2000 records, so hopefully ok
Cheers,
Geoff.

Mutilple GEDCOMS vs single GEDCOM
Thanks for that Jane. I guess things just get slower with larger files and there is the risk that if something goes wrong you could lose everything back to the last backup.
Do you know if it is technically possible to link to persons in an external GEDCOM file using FH4 ?
Cheers,
G.

Mutilple GEDCOMS vs single GEDCOM
I've a funny feeling I saw a thread on this quite a while ago, but can't find it now. Apologies if going back over old ground. What are the feelings of the group on single or multiple GEDCOMS ? It strikes me it might be nice to be able to (say in the case of cousins of a line in which you are intere...

Reusing Source Record Ids
I have just noticed this posting. It would be disasterous to reuse seemingly redundant recordIDs. If for some reason you had referred to a person by their ID somewhere you would find that they would suddenly become someone else rather than alerting you to the fact that the record was deleted.

Create a website - bugs in V4 ?
Hi John, Spot on mate. Why didn't I notice the version difference ? Looks like the FTP upload got interrupted and the last few files never made it to the webserver, hence older versions were served along with the newer ones. Thanks very much for that John - I uploaded it all again and now we're fine...

Create a website - bugs in V4 ?
Hi Jane, thanks for your response. Neither is flagged at all. Wilfred and Frances are marked as divorced but I can't imagine that should change anything. The odd thing is that Ursula appears on her mother's page, but not her father's and the mother's surname does not appear on the husband's page. I ...

Create a website - bugs in V4 ?
I have noticed two possible bugs in V4's website generator. I have created and published a website of my FH data. If you look here: http://www.uplyme.com/genealogy/ind995.html you will see the page for Wilfred WHITING. The surname of his spouse is not shown and he does not have a daughter called Urs...

Filling boxes with no border
I prefer to produce diagrams without boxes around data as I find it looks less clunky, so in 'Diagram Options/Boxes//Edit Features' I have set Box Shape to . However, I would like to change the background colour of certain items to indicate flagged conditions that require attention. The flag mechani...

Thanks John,
It's Windows 2k, so NTFS here. Wasn't FAT limited to just 8.3 filenames ?
I was wondering what would happen if I tried FH4 under WINE on Linux. It might well overcome the problem as Linux doesn't have silly filename restrictions like Windows does.

Thanks Bilko, I think the problem is when FH joins the two part paths together to request the file, it goes well over the 255 limit. I have used some abbreviations, but on some of the 1841 files, the ED, page number whatever was cut and pasted from the Ancestry 'source' which gets a bit convoluted. ...

Thanks Simon,
The project name is only 15 chars. I must have been quite close to the limit in V3 and now I seem to have gone over the top.

I have run into a similar problem in V4. Using the excellent Gedcom Census, I have saved hundreds of census images in a structured tree, each having quite a long file name containing useful information about the year, place, Class, folio etc etc. For the 1841 copies these filenames can be quite long...

Finding citations
Spot on - didn't think to look up there.
Thanks Helen for your quick response.
It would be good if that were accessible as a right-click option in the records/sources list.
I wonder if it will be in V4
Cheers,
Geoff.

Finding citations
In the Records window you can click the 'Sources' tab and see the details of a source. Usefully, one of the details is the number of citations for a source, but how do I then find out which records those citations are from please ?

Geoff Browne.

Yes, of course that would be even better, though I understood development on GC is halted ?

Cope better when Gedcom Census updates GEDCOM file
When Gedcom Census posts an amended GEDCOM file as a result of 'Save', FH correctly notices and asks you if you wish to reload the new data, however when it is reloaded, your current view is blanked and you lose context. I find this irksome to say the least, as I usually have the two side by side on...

Setting paths to folders for backups, diags etc
Whenever you save a diagram or do a backup, or in fact save anything, you are prompted with the folder you most recently used in the session. I suggest that a preferences item be provided, where paths may be specified for separate folders where things get saved to disc, ie a backups folder, a diagra...
