New OS - having to reinstall
Update: Thanks to your advice, I've now been able to reinstall FH5 successfully, and also update to 5.0.7. In the end I didn't have to contact Calico Pie, since my upgrade exe files were still in the downloads folder. Everything now is hunky-dory except that the diagram design has defaulted to the f...

New OS - having to reinstall
Thank you for such a comprehensive reply! I shall look into each of these points. It's only the applications that need to be reinstalled, because all my documents and data (i.e. My Documents and subfolders) are still on the computer, including the folder 'Family Historian Projects' with files in it ...

New OS - having to reinstall
I've just had a new OS installed (Windows 7 instead of XP). I didn't realise this would mean that I'd have to reinstall all my programs from scratch, and it's taking me a long and arduous time. Regarding FH, it looks like I'd have to dig out my original CD for v4, assuming that that wasn't a downloa...

Tentative records
Custom attributes were too complicated for me to dive into, I'm afraid, but learning how to use flags was a doddle, and I've now set up a custom flag which changes the colour of a diagram box to lurid mauve and displays a big question mark in a circle next to it. That should be enough to remind me t...

Tentative records
Ah - flags! I hadn't read that part of the book, but now I see it. It seems just the thing, so thanks for guiding me to it. I like the idea of the custom attribute - if I can work out how to create one it'll be just the thing.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Tentative records
Is there a way of adding records which will show up in diagrams, etc. as 'tentative' - that is, records that you think are correct but want to keep an eye on, and not be tempted to base further research on until you know you're as correct as you can be? I'm using 4.1.3 by the way. I suppose this cou...

FH on 2 Computers
Thanks, Jane. In the end I managed it by starting a new project on the desktop, using the most recently-edited gedcom (from the laptop via the flash drive). The multimedia links were screwed up for some reason, but I used Bilko's suggestion to remap them. Your suggestions regarding synchronisation l...

FH on 2 Computers
Ah, I'm starting to get it now! It's a bit complicated though, considering how easy much of the program is compared to V3 - and what mistake did I make in exporting/importing gedcom for all my links to be changed in this way? How can I use the 2-computer method for working either on laptop or deskto...

Just seen your post, Bilko - thanks - I'll investigate. Gareth

Hi Gareth,
You need to use 'external file links' from the Tools menu. Best to read up on the help first to get the idea of how to achieve the change of drive. . .
Hope this helps

FH on 2 Computers
(Later) It seems all my multimedia links have disappeared in some export or other, despite my *not* checking the 'Exclude multimedia' box. Now that I have overriden the original project name in an import, I've probably lost the links irretrievably, which is a pain. At least the basic data (names, re...

FH on 2 Computers
Oh, no, I seem to have goofed. When I tried to import my gedcom into a 'new' project, I (probably foolishly) accepted the same name for the project as before). Now all the data seems to be there as regards names and notes, etc. but all my multimedia has disappeared - no links anywhere, and big cross...

FH on 2 Computers
Having been used to the V3 way of doing things, I've been a bit stymied by the 'import gedcom' part of V4. I imported a gedcom file as a new project on my laptop (it was quite a large file which I'd been working on for years on my desktop), and added data to it. I then saved that gedcom with the sa...

Custom text scheme changed in export
Thanks, Jane, for putting me on the right track.
Odd, though, that *some* of the translated words came through unscathed.

Custom text scheme changed in export
I installed v4 on my laptop (it's already on my PC), then did an export-import of the gedcom file. All seemed well until I noticed a slight difference in the diagram view - just one word in the custom scheme for Deaths had been changed! I have set up a custom scheme which displays the boxes in Wels...

Finding an individual's record from a note search
This is more complicated than I thought. The View>Record Links is usually greyed out if I try that with the Note Records results. I do notice that the online help seems to state that creating a local note (i.e. using the N-in-a-box with the + sign on it) creates a note for the current record only. I...

Finding an individual's record from a note search
Hmm, I may have been doing things wrong for a long time, then, because those techniques don't work for me. Is it because I've entered notes by going to the 'Notes' tab and clicking on the little box with an N in it, with a cross on its top left corner, and then entering text into the field that resu...

Finding an individual's record from a note search
Although I'm a long-time user, I still haven't cracked this, and I must be missing something really basic. When I remember a word or two of description of somebody in the database, but don't remember his or her name, I'd like to enter the search terms in the Find Record>Note Search dialog, then matc...

Will upgrading preserve my customizations?
I've been thinking for a long time whether I ought to upgrade to 4 (I've been with 3 all the way, and 2 before that), but would like to know whether all my 'customizations' will transfer successfully. I'm thinking in particular of my custom text scheme, in which the details on the diagram labels (e....

Changing incorrect parent
Is there a quick way of changing the link between parent and child? An ancestor of mine married twice, and some of the children from his first marriage have mistakenly been input as being issue from his second marriage, so I want to show the children as having the same father as now, but a different...

Narrative reports - changing language
First reaction - great, I can easily change the phrases outside the curly brackets. However, parameters like 'date' obviously include extra words (in the case of dates, it is 'on', which needs to be changed for my purposes), so I need to learn more about the codes used by FH. Further research needed...
