Update on Version 3

I currently work for a software house, and know how software releases can be delayed for reasons completely outside the control of the coders - mass production problems, distribution, etc. Even if the current delays are down to coding issues, then which would you rather have; a buggy version now wit...

with the same father

There is an option on the menu at top left of this page to 'Search the Wish List'. Then search for likely keywords. I've just searched for 'illegitimate' and 'father' and not come up with this exact request, but there is a related one regarding the relationship field. Once you view a request, there ...

with the same father

A friend of mine has just emailed me about exactly the same thing. So I would add my vote to the wishlist.

Splitting a tree

I used the Spilt Tree Helper for the first time over the weekend. I wanted to send a part of my tree to a newly found (distant) relative. I tried the 'descendants' query, but as Tombaston says that will also remove spouses. I changed the query to 'All relatives' and was left with the information req...

Cousin - but no parents known...

What I've done in this situation is to create 'pseudo' entries to form the missing bits of the tree. So I might have something like: [pre] (grandmother of Joe Bloggs)                 (mother of Joe Bloggs) (aunt of Joe Bloggs)                                   Joe Bloggs                           Ma...

Commercial travellers

Two of my ancestors (brothers) were both 'Commercial Travellers' according to their census entries. However I'm having trouble tracking them down: One of the brothers appears on the 1851 census, age < 1 year. He then doesn't appear again until the 1881 census where he appears living with his wife, a...

Recording military service

Thanks Jane & Nick. I wasn't aware it was the LDS who defined the GEDCOM standard, but now I know that, the list of attributes and events makes sense.

I had seen that V3 will make things easier, but wondered how others had dealt with it. Guess I'll just have to wait for the postman!

Cheers

Recording military service

I have tried creating custom events/attributes, but I can't seem to come up with suitable names for them, such that they make sense when included in reports. That's the bit I'm struggling with [frown] Seems strange that the GEDCOM standard doesn't have anything for military service, but does contain...

Recording military service

I'm struggling to find a good way of recording various aspects of my ancestors' military service. I've tried creating various custom attributes, but they have very strange wording when appearing in reports. The sort of information I need to capture is all the information from the WO97 records, plus ...

Use of Place Names

I use very similar rules to Tombaston. I record place names as they were recorded at the time. I only include the country if it is not England. I include the county based on the traditional county boundaries or the county at the time. The Royal Mail use addresses that are convenient to their distrib...

Sources

For certificates and other sources that refer to just one person (or two in the case of a marriage certificate) I have one source per document e.g. Birth Certificate, Fred Bloggs, 1492 For censuses (censii???) I have one source per parish e.g 1871 Census Return, Morden I then use the 'where within s...

Thanks Jane. I'm slowly getting the hang of these lists [smile]. I'm just starting to learn the power and usefullness of them.

ToDo list

I think the problem is that I don't fully understand how the lists work [frown]. I followed the HowTo (fab, by the way) but couldn't see how that helped me with what I wanted to do. It wasn't clear to me that I could add notes to list entries. Perhaps its time I went back and had another play with t...

Reducing space between generations in charts

I've been pondering the same thing as Ruth. The problem is that on the All Relatives diagram it uses 2 rows per generation. The options dialog won't allow you to enter a value of 1. This wastes a lot of space on the paper, meaning that for most of my diagrams I have to print on two sheets. I tried r...

ToDo list

I've read the previous posts on here regarding ToDo lists, and using the existing list feature. However from what I can tell this just allows you to add individuals to a list and then add a note saying what the TODO is. This seems very complicated and error-prone. What would be much better is to hav...

Birth name v Adopted name

A friend of mine had a similar problem, where a relative changed his name by deed poll at an early age. She got round this by entering both surnames in the name field, in the form 'Joe Bloggs (formerly Smith)'. This seems to work well for the reports etc. She then added a custom event for the change...

Accessing the Web Site

Hi Christine, It does sound like an association problem. Try this: Open 'My Computer', and then select Tools->Folder Options, and then select the File Types tab. This should bring up a window containing a list of all the file types your computer knows about. Scroll down the list until you find HTM. ...

How far do you go?

I can also recommend Ancestral Trails. I got mine from a 'bargain' bookshop (one that sells overstock from mainstream bookeshops). Even at the full RRP I would say its worth it. I've also attended a couple of courses given by Richard and Marjorie Moore, who are both heavily involved with the SoG. Th...

Pine Road, Holdenhurst, Hampshire

I don't think you can search for an address as such. What I did was leave the top part of the search form entirely blank except for the registration county. I then put the name of the road (also try variations of spelling and abbreviation) in the 'keywords' box. This seems to work for the 1891 (not ...

Looks like I need District 24 which isn't on the site yet [cry].

Guess I'll have to wait until I can get access to a microform copy, or until they add it to the site.

Thanks for your help anyway Jane.

I tried looking for just 'Pine' in Hampshire and Dorset and it came up with lots of hits, but only one in Holdenhurst and that was for 'Pine Villas'. I've tried looking for adjoining streets as well and can't find them. Just been doing a few other experiments, and I've come to the conclusion that th...

Hoping someone can help. One of my ancestors died in 1881 aged 1 in Pine Road Holdenhurst (Bournemouth area) Hampshire, but lived in Maple Road. Reference numbers on diagrams

I think I'm beginning to understand what's going on. I have on occassion imported my gedcom file into Family Tree Maker. I think at some point I must have exported back out to gedcom, and am now using that version. I think FTM has inserted them. Sorry for the confusion. Looks like a session of text ...
