How do you organise your files?

when people speak of 'directories', do they mean another folder.
Yes, sorry. Directories are now called folders under Windows.

How do you organise your files?

I have a directory called 'images'. In there I have a directory called 'Census returns', and in there a directory for each census year. All of the census pages I have images of then go in there. As for images of certificates, and photographs, I have a directory in the 'Images' directory for each per...

WW1 Death - registration?

Also remember that deaths overseas are listed separately. My uncle died in a downed aircraft just off the Yorkshire coast in WWII. Because he died at sea he is listed as having died overseas.

However, as Margaret says, the military certificates give very little information.

How were censuses carried out?

Thanks Jane, a very interesting article. Seems amazing that the information we now have available is as accurate as it is [tongue]

How were censuses carried out?

Something I've been wondering for a while... How were the censuses carried out in olden-tymes(TM). Nowadays its a reasonable assumption that most households contain someone literate enough to complete a census form. But for say the 1841 census I'm guessing that literacy was not that common in the wo...

Verbal Sources

Dave said: Following on from this do you record verbal sources for events that you know from your own experience. Yes, I have a source entitled 'Personal recollection of Graham Anstey'. I use this whenever I enter anything from 'memory', and include the entry date as well. I may know those facts ar...

Verbal Sources

I follow the same principle as Jane, but word it slightly differently. I create a source called something like 'Personal recollection of John Hindle Law'. I've also used this where I've been sent notes of a conversation including a hand-scribbled tree. Whatever you do, make sure you record the date ...

Meaning of ';al.';

Thanks Martin, yes it could be alias. In which case what is the author trying to say? If they were females he was referring to then I would assume he was referring to married and maiden names, but here he's referring to males.

Meaning of ';al.';

I'm currently reading a book on the history of the Laws in Lancashire, and the author makes several mentions of people with two surnames separated by 'al.' e.g 'Butterworths al Jenkyn crop up there for the next sixty years. John Lord al. Jenkyn lived to be over 90...' He could be quoting verbatim fr...

I used http://www.1837online.com which is a pay-to-view service. If you haven't used this site before, the overseas records are separate and once you've done your search you pay to view each of the resulting index pages. If you find the right index page (the one containing the person you are looking...

Lost relative - fisherman

Have you checked the overseas death records? I had trouble finding the death record for my uncle whose plane crashed in the sea off the Yorkshire coast in 1940. It seems that if the person died in international waters, then they are recorded as having died overseas. Hopoe this helps, and good luck. ...

Narrative Reports

I suspect you'll have to do this manually. What the report is doing is taking each event and attribute, and turning it into a sentence. Because there is no concept of linked events/attributes, then it wouldn't know which ones to combine into a single sentence. I gather V3 gives you more flexibility ...

Trailer record?

Hi Kirsty, I would strongly recommend that you run a check on your disk. Assuming you are running Windows2000 or Windows XP, do the following: * Open 'My Computer' and right-click on the C drive, and select 'Properties' * Select the 'Tools' tab. * Select the 'Check Now' button. On the dialog that fo...

Birth Certificates

Like Jane, I record a birth certificate as the source for the mother's name at the time I prove the link (i.e the first time). I don't bother for subsequent offspring unless there's a reason to, such as where a child was born illegitimate and registered with one surname, but was always known by the ...

Scottish census

My guess would be that scotlandspeople.gov.uk will be the ones to publish them, as they already have 1861 - 1901 available. There's no clues on the site as to when (or if) 1851 might become available, though.

Adding Baptisms dates

Not entirely sure what you're asking. There is a Baptism event in the same way as there is a Birth event. This allows you to add the relevant details. To add an event go to the Event tab on the property sheet for the person, and then press the left hand button (a + next to a bullet point). Apologies...

Thanks for that Malcolm. I think the problem is fixed (for me at least) now, but its interesting to know the cause, and a workaround, should I have problems again.

Completeness of 1861-91 Census

It also doesn't help when your ancestors were variously know by either their first or second (or in one case third!) forename [mad] If they moved around the country, or countries, then sometimes what the enumerator writes down can be very different from what you would expect. Some of my ancestors co...

Technical Question re-Photographs

I don't use FrontPage, but my guess is that the zooming is a feature of FrontPage. HTML doesn't support the concept of zooming. Some browsers have the option to re-scale images to fit the screen, but you can't rely on this. On the site I did for a friend, we decided to have the image just big enough...

familysearch.org problem?

I did a bit of digging around last night, and it would appear that they have been having problems. Apparently at one point a few days ago, it could only be accessed from the west coast of America. There have been reports of it being up and then disappearing again. There's no official reason given, s...

Cannot Load Saved File

Hi Jen, I would strongly recommend linking them rather than embedding them. Image files are big and will quickly make your file unmanageable (as you've found) [frown]. By keeping them separately you can back them up separately, and if something should happen to your GEDCOM file, at least you've stil...

If the children have their own family in the next generation, then their details will be shown there (a '+' will be shown before their ordinal number in their parents generation). Also, if there are a lot of details for them, then FH seems to also push them onto the next generation. If neither of th...

I use a slight variation to Nick's method. I use a Census event containing just the year and no other information. I'm using it just as a flag that I have that person located in that particular census. I then use Residence attibutes to record where they were, including the entire household in the no...

Has version 3 been delayed?

I posted a follow-up comment to Simon's announcement before reading this thread. Ho-hum [oops] Creating a time-bombed version has its own problems and overheads so I can understand why they wouldn't want to go down that route. I find it mildly amusing that a group of people who by definition are loo...
