Diagram - ';Save as default'; box
This is something I would like to have as well. It would be nice to able to 'mess about' with a diagram without having to remember to keep unchecking the 'save as Default' box. I had meant to make a wish list request on this, so thanks Annie.

Line Spacing between Sources in Reports
Jane Thanks - further checking has established that I didn't have source notes turned on for every report and yes, the double spacing does disappear if I turn off source notes. So at least the FH behaviour is consistent. I suppose my question now is how do I achieve uniform spacing (either single or...

Line Spacing between Sources in Reports
Some of my reports look untidy because of differences in the spacing between the sources listed. Most are single spaced but there are occasional double spaces. After investigation I have established that the double spacing only occurs if I have added a note to a source. A blank line is then inserted...

I agree with Peter on this. I have been conscious for some time of the potential for losing data through the possibility, say, of a document you are perusing on the desk impacting the space bar and wiping the highlighted field. It might be standard Windows behaviour but I would prefer a diferent beh...

Ancestry also takes you to the image page containing the name you want - or rather it takes you to the page which might contain it, giving you the first and last names on the page. Of course if you don't know the date you have to look at each quarter but is a lot faster than fiddling with a microfic...

It will usually mean a branch of the family descended from a younger son - i.e. not the main descent line. A cadet branch could have become significant, acquiring land through marriage for example, so you might be lucky!

No duplicate records, but duplicates in Diagram
That is how FH does things at the moment. Where you have shared ancestors they get duplicated on trees. The current recommendation is to turn off one of the (unwanted) branches and add a text box to explain. However, we are promided that version 3 (due soon, I hope) will handle this much better.

Go to Preferences (from the Tools Menu). On the General Tab uncheck the box 'Display Surnames in Upper Case'. The names will then display as you entered them.

Diagrams with repeated families
Hello Philip, Thanks for your comments. I agree that those parts of a family tree with cross connections are the most interesting and it is a pity that they cannot be properly shown. Your other wish for a particular type of ancestor/descendent diagram to show the family along a particular link is al...

Diagrams with repeated families
I know this subject has come up before. When you get cousins marrying, the ancestor (and other diagrams) show repeated individuals and families. I have now got this; I find I am descended from one distant ancestor through four different routes. Also the number of generations up/down is not the same ...

Long Notes
Thanks Jane and Simon - the advantage of including the mini-biography in a note is that it gets printed within FH generated individual reports. With a linked object it would have to printed separately (unless there is a way of doing this that I don't know about). So I think the way to go is to split...

Long Notes
Is there a limit on the length of notes? I wanted to incorporate a mini biography as a note. Admittedly, this one wasn't that mini at nearly 6000 words. Using copy and paste, FH truncated it after about 90%. It didn't matter whether it was a Record Note or a Local Note, it got truncated at the same ...

Legal terms in wills
I have met these in my research and I have established:
Messuage = property but also includes any outbuildings, gardens etc.
Tenement = any property or land that is held by a tenant
Hereditaments = anything that can be inherited.
Hope that helps

If you open your Gedcom file with a text editor such as Notepad you should see about 5 or 6 lines down from the top of the file two lines which should like like: 1 GEDC 2 VERS 5.5 Also a couple of lines further on should be a line: 1 CHAR ANSI I assume this is the confirmation Genes Reunited are loo...

No, Jane is not taking the mick. She is ever helpful and patient. However the link in her reply does not appear to be working, so go to the FHUG Home Page and click on Query Store from the Main Menu on the left hand side of the screen.

Cant find a Birth Certificate.
I have a birth in 1856 which appears not to have been registered. The person was christened in Holborn in that year and the census from 1861 to 1901 are all consistent in giving her place of birth as Holborn and her age equating to a birth in 1856. We searched the indexes for years either side of th...

Hand-held Scanners
Thanks for the replies. Using a small digital camera is a good idea but I was seduced by the technology and purchased a Planon R700 scanning pen for about £95 when in New York last month. It is slightly longer and thicker than a normal pen and easily slips into your pocket. You lay it flat on the pa...
