Re: Returning to FH with upgrade to v6
Thank you - that's really helpful. And yes I did buy the full version of 6, so it's good to know there is a free upgrade on offer when 7 comes along.

Returning to FH with upgrade to v6
I'm picking up my family history research after a couple of years (now retired, yippee!) and have upgraded from FH v4 to v6.2. I've read the What's New in Version 6 notes but is there an equivalent for version 5? If not are there any key features or changes that anyone can recommend I familiarise my...

Re: Can't open FH V4.1
Sorry for the belated response, but I have finally swapped my antivirus for Avast Free as recommended, and I can now get back into FH! Still had to tell Avast not to scan the FH file though, so it's still not completely happy. But at least I can get moving on family history again. Thanks very much f...

Re: Can't open FH V4.1
I finally managed to boot up in Safe Mode and FH program worked fine. I did run the AVG scan specifically on the FH program but it's not detecting anything. I've also added FH to the exceptions on the Firewall. but its not having any obvious effect. However if I open FH before the AV has had a chanc...

Re: Can't open FH V4.1
Thanks! I managed to find the advanced setting option to exclude the FH folder from scanning on AVG , but that hasn't enabled me to open FH - does excluding it just mean AVG won't "attack" FH on its next scheduled scan? I also Googled "Boot in Safe Mode" and tried the F8 key, but I didn't know how t...

Re: Can't open FH V4.1
Thanks, Jane I have tried temporarily disabling the Antivirus (it is the free version of AVG) and that didn't make a difference. I then tried to reboot the computer in safe mode, but I am not sure whether that actually worked (does it tell you you are in safe mode?). However I did manage to open FH ...

Re: Can't open FH V4.1
Thanks for coming back to me, and I apologise in advance if I'm not able to follow up quickly - I can only grab some time on the computer late in the evening. I'm on Windows XP and we've done nothing to the system or computer for months, except normal defrag and disk clean up. I've just done a compl...

Can't open FH V4.1
I've had a break from family history for a few months and went to open FH today from my shortcut, and nothing happened. I also tried going to Programs, found Family Historian and clicked Open. Again nothing. I've located the .ged files on the C drive in My Documents, but clicking Open with Family Hi...

PS. Small contribution on its way - AS and GC are both great add-ons to Family Historian and I wish you all the best with future developments.

Thanks, Nick - finally found it buried deep in the records. It prints out fine as a sources note when printing a report, but I do like to be able to glance over at the transcription when looking at facts in the properties window. So will have to stick with the complete transcription against each i...

With the Christmas break I have finally downloaded AS, which seems really good - I've always found Gedcom Census really useful and this looks even better. I'm a bit confused about source text though. I am one of those awkward people who have always used Method 2 so with Gedcom Census the source te...

Editing personal profile
I was trying to edit my Profile on FHUG and though the correct screen shows up and allows me to edit the fields, I am not seeing any 'Save' options - the only way out of the screen is to go back, leaving the changes unsaved. I am also getting an error message saying User doesn't exist (I do!) Am I ...

Multiple Names
Dear MrB I think many of us struggle with this problem. I have one woman on my tree whose birth record gives her as Ellen, she is Eva when baptised a couple of weeks later and the first census record shows her as Eliza, but there is little doubt these records are all for the same person. My advice ...

Merge individuals within ged.com
I can't find this elsewhere on the Wish list. It would be very useful to be able to compare and merge two individuals within one's tree, when you find out they are one and the same person. The only way I can find to do it is to split one (with his offspring) off to another tree, and then compare and...

This exchange has prompted me to add my vote - perhaps others will join in too. It would be a v useful addition.

Uploading trees to Genes Reunited
THANK YOU, JANE! Successfully found and edited the incorrect entry (which was from someone else's imported GEDCOM) and it then uploaded onto Genes Reunited. For anyone else trying this, even this successful upload showed an immediate error message, but when I exited the site and went back in, the tr...

Uploading trees to Genes Reunited
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I did finally get a response from the website support - though the first response I got was one just telling me to look at their help instructions on the site, so they didn't actually read my problem until I went back a second time. All they could tell me was that ther...

posting fh to web
Just wanted to say that I just tried the Gedmill software and it was very very easy to use and has created a simple, clear and attractive set of webpages and a good index. With my minimal html knowledge, I've also been able to customize my home page and add a couple of pictures to the individual's p...

Uploading trees to Genes Reunited
Has anyone else had problems uploading their FH tree onto Genes Reunited? I can't do it and get error messages (see below). They claim to have a support on email but despite four requests I have been ignored. I've been tempted to give up, but have found lots of good information through the site, s...

Dear Jane
Thank you so much for this 'idiot's guide'. This idiot found it very easy to follow, and I'm now feeling very smug at having completed a complex merge. Thanks as always for your prompt response.

I felt sure that this was covered in the help or elsewhere - but I can't find it! In order to split off a section of a tree I've been sent, in order to import it, I have created a named list for all the people I want to keep in the tree. I was then trying to delete from the larger tree everyone ex...

Just to follow up on the London geography. The Family Records Centre is in Clerkenwell( a short walk from either Angel or Farringdon underground stations, and a short bus ride from Kings Cross). This link takes you to address, opening hours etc. http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/visits/visits.ht...
