Jon has also uploaded this test tree successfully, and I can view it.
I'm using Firefox browser, but will try with IE, and also from another computer. Maybe also try clearing cache and cookies as well.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk
HMMPFFFF [mad] Best laid plans etc....even my one person tree was bounced by Ancestry as an invalid gedcom file (thrice)! Jon, can you spot any significant differences between what's listed below and what you've successfully uploaded? Thanks, David. 0 HEAD 1 SOUR FAMILY_HISTORIAN 2 VERS 3.1 2 NAME F...

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk
Thanks Jon. I'll create a new 1 person file and if that works then try some experiments by adding things in. I'll post any findings back here in case it's of use to someone else. ([evil] Of course I could always get hold of a copy of Family Tree Maker, export from FH to FTM, and then upload the FTM ...

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk
Jon, I've checked that I have deleted named lists and flags, but Ancestry still protests! Here are the first few lines of my ged file: 0 HEAD 1 SOUR FAMILY_HISTORIAN 2 VERS 3.1 2 NAME Family Historian 2 CORP Calico Pie Limited 1 FILE D:_DataFamily HistoryAncestryDMancestors.ged 1 GEDC 2 VERS 5.5 2 F...

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk
Thanks Jane, I've done what you suggested, but Ancestry still reports an invalid gedcom file. I have used Res Privata to leave only year of b/m/d in the file, but the place of the event is still there. I have places recorded as place 1 = street address, place 2 = town, place 3 = county. In some case...

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk
I've been trying for a while to upload my tree to Ancestry, only to keep getting an error message saying that it's not a valid gedcom file. Ancestry are not much help, just keep saying it's my fault! I found a thread on here from about a year ago, but this never seemed to arrive at a conclusion. Is ...

keeping census information organized for dum
I use an Excel spreadsheet to capture the census information for a 'family group' so that I can see how individuals flow from one census to the next. I also capture images of related census pages, bmd indexes etc relevant to that spreadsheet and keeps these in subfolders below the spreadsheet. What'...

Ancestors amp; Descendants Diagram
It's not just the relationship descriptions that get 'out of sync' it is also the generation stripes and boundaries (at least on left to right and right to left orientation).

Search for a Street in Census?
I've had a few instances where I have wanted to search a census return based only knowing the street name and registration district (eg based on info from a marriage certificate, but perhaps due to transcription errors the people names have not been found). My main resource is Ancestry.co.uk and it'...

WW1 Death - registration?
My grandfather was killed in WW1 and I have the original letter advising of his place of burial. I also know the exact date of death. However I've been unable to find any entry in the GRO Death Index that matches his name and age (even approximately). Were the deaths of WW1 servicemen registered, wa...

Birth Cert - Mothers name?
Many thanks for your replies.
Presumably the 'late Pritchard' implies that her first husband died, rather than they divorcing?
David.

Birth Cert - Mothers name?
A birth cert that I've just received shows the 'Name, surname and maiden surname of mother' as 'Margaret Hinks late Pritchard formerly Pritchard'.
Could someone explain the late and formerly bits please, I've not come across this before.
Thanks, David.

Downloaded FH Software
Hi Jane. These offline demos are VERY useful, thank you. The 'Entering data from a Birth Certificate' link results in an error 404 message from the Freeola site, maybe a mistype or something in the link. All the others work fine. FHUG is one of the most helpful groups I've come across, I'd be lost w...

Paper!
I did a Google, searching UK sites only and found:
http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/pages/mo ... te&cid=880
Google returned lots more entries, so maybe worth looking further down the list.

To Barry1936.
Very useful tip about Ancestrys BMD index, thanks!
How about posting the other useful links that you've found on here, maybe others could then add to it. It could maybe form an article.

Completeness of 1861-91 Census
Barry. Thanks for that information, sounds like I should persevere with the searches, although I too have struggled to understand the logic (or lack of) behind Ancestrys search engine. I also seem to find quite a few census images that bear no relation to the names given on the index which pointed t...

Diagram showing all people
I find diagrams a very useful way of 'keeping the big picture in mind', and wondered if there is a way of producing a diagram showing all individuals in the database, to avoid having to try and think of an individual whose 'all relatives' diagram will show the biggest part of the tree? Can a standar...

Completeness of 1861-91 Census
I have found my wifes great grandparents and children in the 1901 census (St Lukes in London) but can find no likely matches in earlier census' for parents or children. From a family bible discovered this weekend the GG grandfather was born in a very very poor and notorious area of East London (near...
