Tree - sticking A4 sheets together
As a Christmas pressie for Mum in Law I want to make up an A4 ring binder with a fold out tree, followed by a narrative report of all the people on it. The tree, with her ancestors and descendants fits quite nicely on 2h x 6w A4 sheets. What I need is to be able to stick these together (without over...

The terms ';Sealed'; and ';Endowedquo
Could someone please explain the meaning of the terms 'sealed' and 'endowed' in the context of this listing from a ancestry report: 'Edward xxxxx was born in 1609 in Westcote, Wiltshire, Eng. He died on 28 Mar 1665 in Burbage, Wiltshire, Eng. He was baptized on 29 Apr 1993 in the Ogden Utah temple. ...

Ancestry's other databases
I apologise in advance to those of you that know all about this, but I didn't until a day or so ago, so I'm posting this for any 'newbies' who might find it useful. On Ancestry, as well as the databases (BMD, census, Pallot etc) that are shown on the home page, there are hundreds (if not more) other...

Big problems!!
Tony, See above - I just opened the zip file with WinZip and then dragged the ged file out to a temporary folder. Double clicking on it then opened it in FH. It looked ok, but I didn't check it it detail. I wasn't aware of a problem with FH ZIP files - any background on this? David. (using XP and FH...

Hi Tracy, I've just tried opening a year old backup file, and it works fine. I take it that you've extracted the ged file from the ZIP backup and put it in some temporary location? Then just double clicking on it should just open it in FH. Try making a copy of the GED file, with a different name (ke...

If you look at the this forum for AVG http://freeforum.avg.com/ you will find that AVG8 has introduced all sorts of problems (functional and performance) and a LOT of people are moving to alternatives, as support and updates for the very good AVG7.5 are supposedly ending on 31 Aug 2008 (ie tomorrow)...

Gt Grandfather at Covent Garden Market in 1890s
Many thanks Jane, that does look interesting, and will keep me busy for a while reading through it.
I've not come across A2A before, and just googled for it. That looks a useful resource and worth investigating further, so thank you for that as well.
Best Wishes, David.

Gt Grandfather at Covent Garden Market in 1890s
Family anecdote has it that my Gt Grandfather, a John Clarke, was appointed general manager of Covent Garden Market in the 1890s. I've totally lost track of him after his marriage in 1884 in London, although there is some evidence of his family in Cardiff in the early 1890s. Maybe they moved away, t...

How are you planning to display the slide show? Pinnacle is really aimed at creating videos or slide shows for display on a TV, and with a TV screen you won't get good enough resolution to display more than 3 or 4 generations of a family tree. If you give us a bit more information on what you are tr...

Florence - a man's name?
Here are images of the names from the census returns (1841, 1851): http://www.fhug.rjt.org.uk/images/uploads/1841_Florence.jpg http://www.fhug.rjt.org.uk/images/uploads/1851_Florence.jpg Not sure what the annotation to the left of the second one means. Both look like Florence to me. In both case the...

Florence - a man's name?
I have two census entries (see below) for an ancestor, in which the name appears (both to me and Ancestry indexes) as Florence Donoghue but age is shown in the male column, and in her daughter's marriage certificate Florence is shown in Fathers Name box. They were born in Ireland. Has anyone come ac...

If you're new to FH it's well worth running through the tutorial, that will cover the basics including creating sources. From the FH main menu click in Help, Getting Started and then read the section on that page called The Quick Start Tutorial. The way I create a new source is (usually) as follows:...

Census - finding enumeration district
In a city like London, what's the quickest/easiest way to find the census enumeration district (or Piece/Folio reference) if I just have a street address and registration district (say from a marriage certificate)? From a marriage cert in 1882 I'm trying to find who lived at the given address in the...

Not just text editors, some html files can also be opened in MS Word and display correctly. I often copy and paste internet pages of interest into Word, then save it as an html file.

An alternative is to use flags to denote having BMD certificates, as well as maybe census entries. I also have a 'tentative' flag I set when I record details of an individual but still have some doubt about them, and need to remember to investigate further. I does mean that you have to remember to s...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
I Agree with Anne and Nick, I always start with Ancestry's FreeBMD, then if not found Ancestry's GRO Index, then FreeBMD, then IGI via Family Search. Interesting to see Anne's note about 4 weddings (ie 8 people) per page on earlier entries. Some (at least some of of the periods I'm interested in, e...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
A related question - some of the FreeBMD index images are handwritten but some are typed, so I assume that transcription errors could have happened at this stage. Are the original handwritten index pages still available anywhere (pref online) or were they destroyed after the typed ones had been prod...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
Thanks Jane, that's what I'd assumed at first, but the I've seen pages with more than 4 people, pages with odd numbers of people, pages with more men than women and vice versa. I've also had a couple of orders for marriage certs bounced on the basis of a reference check, with the comment 'not marrie...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
When looking for a marriage in the Ancestry.co.uk FreeBMD Index and I have found an entry that might be relevant, click on the View Record link, and then on the (click to see others on page) link, should I expect to see the spouse listed on that same page, or are their circumstances where the spouse...

The Niece Relationship
Is the niece (or nephew) relationship defined only via the blood line, or can it exist via marriage as well? I have a death cert for a John Smith who I think maybe my gt grandfather, but I need to try and confirm this. The death was witnessed by an L Hare, niece and I know that there was at least on...
