FH4 Crashing when trying to attach photos
Hi, can you describe exactly what (and how) you are doing, might give us a clue as to what's going on? What version of Windows are you using? Have you set up your main file as an FH project? Might be worth creating a new GED file from scratch with just one or two people in it and then trying to atta...

Comparing and merging records
What I do if I want to send a bit of my tree to someone is display a diagram of as near that bit as I can, hide any extraneous people in the diagram, select all the people showing in the diagram (just use the mouse and drawer a box around all of them), and then add the selected people to a named lis...

Blocking selected photos in online Trees
Just thought I'd add to this - I always use Res Privata to make a filtered copy of my ged file before posting it to the likes of Genes Reunited or Ancestry. I removed the day/month part of the date for any births, deaths or marriages for any living people, as well a notes and multimedia. You could m...

Blocking selected photos in online Trees
Hi Graham, I noticed you used the term 'I will just have to remove the photos from the GEDCOM it seems before uploading an updated tree'. If this means that you normally embed your images in your gedcom file why not consider making these particular images 'linked to' rather than embedded. Then you c...

Best format for scanned documents?
Just to clarify. FH allows you to insert multimedia (eg scanned images) into your file, but this embeds the image into the GED file where FH keeps all your data. This is not recommended as it can result in huge GED files. FH also allows you to link to multimedia files (or in fact any type of file) t...

Best format for scanned documents?
I normally scan things like certificates in at 150dpi or even 300dpi, and a colour rather tha B&W as I find that gives a clearer image if I want to really zoom in on some text to decipher it. Also I use JPG format which is a more widely accepted format than many others. With the size of modern hard ...

Individuals - source record - mm record?
Carrying on with the theme of my tidying up my records... When adding census information I normally create a source record based on the name of the 'key' person eg. Census 1871 - Margaret Atkins (b1792) with the publication info containing the source reference eg Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece:...

Help with a query to sort out a problem
True, but that will mean trawling though a LOT of source records to find those with the incorrect entries and then deleting each one individually. I was hoping to find a cleverer way, but maybe there isn't one. I've managed to create a query that lists all of the source records that contain a file l...

Help with a query to sort out a problem
Was about to move some multimedia files around into a new structure to make them easier to find. Opened 'work with external files' to remind myself how this works and found that I had a whole load of entries with a X agaist them. Further investigation shows that I have quite a few source records wit...

Diagrams - where does FH keep config?
I asked this some long time ago, but didn't get the answer I wanted [cry] so am going to try again just in case someone knows something different. When you use Diagram Options to modify boxes and then add some record record flags, where is FH storing this information? I'd like to see if I can change...

Works for me on single people, just tried it. Just make sure the child count attribute is added for that person and set to 0 (zero). Edit - and if woman has two husbands, if you set the child count to 0 for one husband, and she has a child with the second husband, only the first husband is underlined.

OK, so I've added the 'child count' attribute (NB not 'count of children' as in Jane's picture - is this something different?) and set it to 0 (zero), but no line appearing on the descendants or all relatives diagram, and yes I have redrawn the diagram. I can use the diagram options, box features, t...

Where/who to link a photo to
I've recently acquired a photo of the cottage where my Gt Gt Grandparents lived for many years, and where many of their children were born. I'm struggling to decide where would be the best place(s) to link this to so that it doesn't just get lost in amongst all the other image files that I've got. I...

As Jane says - with bells on. The FH backup only backs up your GED file, not any other files that you may have created in, or FH has copied to, your project folder eg. images of census', scanned copies of certificates, documents received from other people, research notes that you have made etc. as s...

Census Date Check query
Hi Nick, Before seeing your last two messages I'd concocted a query which did find a census event with no place name (or source). I think it arose from an abortive attempt (a couple of years ago!) to merge a GED file that someone sent me. I've deleted the event (added a note to the individual as to ...

Census Date Check query
Hi Nick, Thanks for the suggestion. I'm somewhat of a novice on on FH queries, so not sure what your query is trying to show but the select row expression Condition: Add If Expression: %INDI.CENS[year=1891]% Operator: matches Value: (leave blank) doesn't return any individuals. However Condition: Ad...

Census Date Check query
Ah - managed to clear the 1901 entry, found that I had an old (manually entered) census event with no place recorded. I've now run the same query (listing all individuals having a census event for 1891, and showing the place name), but the place names all seem to be ok, no blanks or funny characters...

Having now tidied up all my census flag tags and descriptions, and resolved quite a few census flag check errors I'm now just left with two Census Date Check 'errors' that I don't quite understand, or be able to get rid of. http://www.fhug.rjt.org.uk/images/uploads/Census_Date_Check.jpg I've tried u...

If you have created custom icons for use with flags I think that you will also need to copy these to the other PC. They are held in: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianIcons at least this is where they are in XP, Win7 may be somewhere different but I'm sure th...
