Sending Tree to Someone
Thanks Tatewise, That was the version of FH I was thinking about. However upon checking the restrictions one of them is that it will only display the all relatives diagram for files with up to 100 individual records - I have about 640 individuals in the file that I want to send. I wouldn't have mind...

Sending Tree to Someone
I know this has been asked before but I can't now find the post(s) so apologies for raising it again! I want to send details of the relevant part of my tree to a cousin. I've created a new GED file with just those individuals that will be of interest to him, and sent a jpg diagram and report coverin...

Finding Family Historian
Or use Windows Explorer and navigate down to C:Program FilesFamily HistorianProgram and look for the file Fh.exe Right mouse click on it, select Create Shortcut, then copy and paste (or drag and drop) this shortcut into your Start Menu. (this is using XP, Win7 might be different but I'm sure others ...

Uploading GEDCOM to Ancestry
If you have a Firefox Add-on called (I think) IE View, then you can just right click on a link and select to open it in Internet Explorer. I do this when I select 'Upload a GEDCOM' under the Family Trees tab in Ancestry. Saves messing about going back to the start menu on your PC to find Internet Ex...

Entering sources/citations
I find it useful to think of the Source Citation as just a link (with a meaningful name) that points to a source record. The source record can contain information about where the data came from, and can also contain your transcript of some/all of that information, and notes about it. The source reco...

Copy one of the standard icons (in XP they are in C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily HistorianIcons), rename it then edit it with a graphics program. It can be done with something like MS Paint, which comes with Windows XP, maybe that or something similar with later ve...

I wish someone had told me . . . When I started
I always put in the equivalent of Ann /Dagwood (WIFE)/ in FH, then every so often export a 'sanitised' (eg. dates for those still living truncated to just the year - using Res Privata) ged file to Ancestry and Genes Reunited. Not sure what Ancestry or GR would make of this, but it raises an interest...

Ah, it was the setting of the number of generations that I'd missed (instead of adding all the people to the report) - silly me!
Thank you very much, will now go and engage brain [oops]

I've received reports from other peoples geneaology programs in a format something like: 1 1.1 1.1.1 1.1.2 1.2 1.2.1 1.2.2 etc I'm sure this has a name but I don't know what it is? I'd like to something similar with FH, is it possible without a lot of configuration? If not is there some alternative ...

Have a look at ABC Amber Outlook Converter http://www.processtext.com/abcoutlk.html I use the version for Outlook Express to save any old emails that I might want to keep, but not have to use OE to open them. It saves the email text into a Word document, with all attachments in a sub folder, and wit...

Stable door and horse I know(!) but I always keep a copy (DVD or backup HDD) of any program files (together with the registration key) that I've downloaded, especially ones I've paid for, even if the supplier says they are available on their site for a period of time.

Searching Census by address?
Unless I'm missing something this only allows navigating down to enumeration district, you then have to read through all the street names for each district to find which enumeration district includes the street you are interested in (unless you happen to know it somehow). Then having found the right...

Sounds like your census query would be really useful. Are you planning to upload it to the Query Store?

I wish someone had told me . . . When I started
And just to add - With regards to keeping a record of where you searched, particularly with on line records it is sometimes worth repeating unsuccessful searches because new records become available on an ongoing basis, so something that wasn't there even 6 months ago might be there today! Particula...

It's on the wish list in this forum (see Jane's earlier reply), and Calico Pie do take input from it. Can't do any harm to tell them direct as well I guess, though you should add your vote to it on here - see main menu.

+ Setting of a 'Baptism' flag in a similar way to census' ?
I currently have flags for birth cert, baptism entry, marriage cert and death cert in FH and set them manually when I enter details from these sources, (and have linked images of the source documents).

Mary, I've just tried what (I think) you have described and it seems to work ok for me in v4. Add additional text to 'Actual Text' box via Source Records List window: http://www.fhug.rjt.org.uk/images/uploads/1.jpg Open Source Panel (by double clicking on the name of the source in the Source Records...

Is there any way of using a dotted line?
That's what I have done - I've created a flag called Validate, and an associated icon (a big red ?), modified the diagram options to display that flag and then set the flag for all people I'm a bit dubious about. The added benefit of using a flag is that you can easily use a query to find all those ...

Thanks Gerry - I stand corrected. Although I noticed that when you do the restore and it then asks where you want to save the restored file, by default it saves the ged file to the drivefolder where the backups are, rather than the drive and xxxxx.fh_data folder where the working ged file is normall...

FH can backup your ged file 'automatically' each time you close FH down. I think it's set by default to do this, but if not you can set/unset the feature via Tools-Preferences and the the backup tab. You can specify where you want the backup file to be placed and how you want it named. If you leave ...

Hi Bill, Glad you got it sorted. The added plus is that now you know your way around FH (and it's folder structure) more than you did before. I've learned as much about things on the PC by getting them wrong first time than I have from reading all the books, and they stay in the old memory (mine tha...

Hi Bill, Re your reply above to my post, in the first screen capture have you tried completing the fields for Format (set it to jpeg from the drop down list) and Title to see if that makes any difference? Place name dupilcated in lower case
Not too difficult to check though, if you use the Tools, Work with data, Places function, then just click on one of the column headings to sort the list. Just 'pattern scanning' with the eye can usually spot those sorts of things. I sometimes forget how I've entered a place name and then end up with...
