getting organized / reviewing / starting over
Referring to the Knowledgebase article to which Jane refers I have a slight variation on this: Under Census I have subfolders with the surname each of my (and my wifes) grandparents. Within these I keep the census images titled Census 1901 - Fred Smith (b1878).jpg (for example). I also use this file...

Tatewise - re my previous post I've just followed up on the link you posted and taken a look at your website http://www.users.freenetname.co.uk/~miketate/ancestry/ind28.html and you have achieved just what I'm aiming for in terms of popping up full sized images. I'd really appreciate a bit more inf...

Charts and Web site
Thanks Tatewise , yes that's a much easier way of getting a picture link into the table of contents. It doesn't load into a new tab or window, but I can force that by right clicking on the link and select to open in new tab (or in my case I have the middle mouse button configured to do this). Curri...

Following on from my previous reply, a couple of other thoughts. Like you I wasn't very familiar with html but I found this site quite helpful: http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp You might also like to try GEDMill, a program that will take your FH produced ged file and create a website. It's ...

I've just done the chart bit of this (albeit to a CD, but it's basically the same). Not terribly elegant, but it works. I created a diagram in FH and saved it as both jpg and single page pdf (my diagram was small enough to fit). I then used FH wizard to create the CD (or website in your case), selec...

Publishing to CD or website
Thanks for the replies. I've had a look through the Members Web Sites, and there are certainly some quite swish ones there, with the sort of tree diagram I had in mind, but way beyond my capability at the moment. I think I'll look further at the FH CD option and see what I can do with that. Any thou...

I've only just started exploring this area, as I want to send a friend the results of some research I've done into her family tree. I have done some searching in here (forums and KB) but only found detailed questions/answers. I'm looking for something at more the big picture level at the moment to s...

Thank you both.

Attach other file types?
I sometimes like to attach other file types (eg .txt) to a census source. Up until now I've added this in FH after I've entered the census details (and added an image) in AS. It would be quite handy to be able to add a link to this attachment while entering all the other details in AS. Would it be d...

Does anyone have any views of Dropbox compared with Synctoy.
Just wondered as I'm thinking of using Dropbox, which seems to be the favourite around here.

Also have a look at the Res Privata utility program - just search for Privata in the FHUG Knowledgebase to see a description, and there's also a link for downloading it. I usually use it as the last step before publishing my tree (eg on Ancestry).

Help with spreadsheet please.
I use a spreadsheet for basically creating a sort of timeline of a family, based on census returns, with hyperlinks in the spreadsheet to downloaded census images (and also BMD index entries if it helps tie the timeline together) so that I can access that inforation quickly. I find that this helps m...

I'm always a little wary of using these synchronisation things (be it a program just running on PCs on a local network or an internet based service) as a substitute for proper backups. If a file on one PC is erroneously deleted (or corrupted in some way) the synchronisation can result in this error ...

Me and the Mrs are on hols abroad next week, but I really can't be bothered trying to work that one out in terms of filling the forms in. So I filled mine in online last week, intending to save it so that so that it would get submitted automatically on the closing date (the online system says it wil...

Of course in a 100 years time there will probably be 'super intelligent' software around where, at the click of a button, it will just go away and do all the research automatically and just dump a full tree, with all source info, straigt onto you desktop, or whatever device we'll all be using by the...

Nick,
I assume that by default it will add a baptim fact, but will it be possible to change this (either as the default or an option on each entry) to christening etc?

Another question re adoption
I've added a person where I know both birth parents and adoptive parents, and the person was renamed upon adoption. After a couple of false starts and some playing around I've ended up with the following: http://www.fhug.rjt.org.uk/images/uploads/DM1.jpg I have the adoptive parents appearing both un...

Adoption and Name Change
If you have a child who is adopted and given a completely new name (fornames and surname) as a result of that adoption how would you deal with that in FH? I've added both sets of 'parents' and an adoption fact, with a note about name change. At the moment I've just assigned a second name to the pers...

Thanks again Tatewise. I'll have to chat with my cousin to see how serious he is about looking at the family history, and if he's willing to learn the basics of using FH (and how much time I'll have to spend teaching him!). Do you know if the read only FH v3.0.1 can safely be installed alongside v4 ...
