Re: Unable to load object
Re the thumbnail cache file, just as an example, I have about 3600 image files (plus a 100 or so document files - I don't know if these are cached in any way) in my media folder and the cache size is is about 266Mb. I do sometimes delete this cache file and allow FH to rebuild it, which results in a...

Re: Understanding FH Queries
The queries in the FHUG Knowledge Base can be found at http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=fhugdownloads:index If I need to produce a new query I always look through the standard queries and KB ones to see if there is anything similar (even vaguely, eg. an individual query vs a family query) to ...

Re: Editing
Once you have entered information in Ancestral Sources and saved it into Family Historian, you have to make any subsequent changes in FH, you can't reload it into AS, even to add information to that data item (eg census, birth etc).
AS is designed only for initial data entry.

Re: Facts - Fast Add Menu
If you haven't already found it, a quick way to use Google to search the FHUG website is to use the url site:www.fhug.org.uk "search subject" replacing search subject with whatever you're searching for (keep the "" marks). Or use site:www.fhug.org.uk/wiki "search subject" if you just want to search ...

Check Installed Plugins - some missing
The plugin The Check Installed Plugins Against the Store v2.8 reports that these plugins are missing from the store: "1.3.1" " " "Check for Possible Duplicated Media" "Jane Taubman + Mike Tate" "1.6" " " "List All Citations for All Sources" "Jane Taubman & Mike Tate" "1.6" " " "List All Citations fo...

In the records window, at the top, you can just enter a record id into the Record Id Go To: box and that record will be selected, just double click to open it.

Re: Key dates not displayed
You enter the age in the box at the bottom, to the right of the date field. That field is for use when you have a fact with associated evidence (a source maybe) that has an age recorded in it. Easiest example to understand is a death index entry, which may show an age at death. If the age is inconsi...

Re: Free Findmypast and Family Historian Webinar
The web is full of reports from people reporting problems due to Trusteer Rapport, from 2009 right up to the present day. I don't understand why banks (in particular) continue to recommend it, and don't seem to have put any pressure on the supplier to get it fixed, but then maybe IBM thinks it knows...

Re: i want the program to open up on the person i am currently working on and not always the root person.
During the day, while I'm using the PC on and off, I usually put it into sleep mode, so that it starts up quickly with everything I was working on still open. However, when finished at the end of the day, I always shut down the machine, as this give Windows a chance to run around doing it's housekee...

Re: i want the program to open up on the person i am currently working on and not always the root person.
I don't believe that you can do this, but a quick way of achieving it is to have the Individual Records window open and the on the Updated column hold down the Alt key and click on that column title. That will sort the displayed records to show the most recently updated one at the top. Under Tools.....

Re: Preferred Format for Places
@Gowermick In the other thread on sorting place names you commented: "David's scheme though, is not the usually recommended way of using places, as he includes Addresses in his Places data. Used the usual way, 3 columns would suffice for Places." The only reason that I've adopted this approach is so...

Re: Sort Place Names on two or more fields
Mike, that's what I thought at first, although this doesn't seem to follow that:
I've checked the actual entries, there are no extra/missing spaces in there that could throw the sort order out.

Re: Sort Place Names on two or more fields
Although I didn't know this before, I agree with Brent , whether by design or accident, it also works for me. I also notice that it works right across the columns, unless you have a blank entry on one row (say 4th last) , then rows to the right become unsorted until a non blank if found in 4th last,...

Fast start-up in Windows 10 is known to cause problems sometimes, see here (amongst many others if you google for "fast start-up"): http://www.howtogeek.com/243901/the-pros-and-cons-of-windows-10s-fast-startup-mode/ The general recommendation seems to be to turn it off unless you are desperate to h...

Moving to "New PC"
Sometime soon I'm going to rebuild my W10 system from scratch, to get rid of all the rubbish left after the W7 to W10 update. All my FH Project files are on a separate HDD (D:). I'll use the Backup and Restore the Family Historian Settings plugin for the FH stuff, but presumably I need to make a lis...

Re: Incorrect Relationship to Root
Surely this is a bug in FH, albeit not a serious one and while it can be circumvented as described by Mike, the impact of it could pop up in all sorts of places. If sex is undefined then FH should not make assumptions about it, although I don't know how the relationship calculator would deal with it.

Re: Export GEDCOM file plugin
Not sure about Windows 10 as an OS as having to restart most times when trying to instal, or even make a new folder. If your Windows is that flaky I'm not sure I'd want to do any serious (family history or other) work on it, you might lose something important. I was pleasantly surprised how well my...

Re: after input of AS plug in
If you have the records window sorted on the Updated column (and use the Alt key when sorting to get the most recently modified records at the top), then FH remembers that sort order when you close and reopen it (following some AS data entry), so the most recently changed individuals will be at the ...

I found the article a little bit one sided, but that seems true of most of the online articles I've seen (on the positive or negative side). You need to read a lot of such stuff to get a more balaced view, and a lot of it is down to personal taste anyway. Maybe I can't turn Cortana off (I bet it won...

A "stick" is a whole lot better than nothing, and given that quite big capacity sticks are not a lot of money, I'd back things up every day - well actually I do, but to four different places, including the cloud! And I don't overwrite previous backups, well at least not for a year. Some stuff I have...

Re: Back Ups
You say that backups appear in "My Documents", presumably on your C: drive (which is where "My Documents" gets created by default). So if your C: drive crashes or gets corrupted you lose all your backups! You should read the FHUG glossary:backup_and_recovery|> Backup and Recovery in particular the s...
