Re: Create Individual Shortcut
In the discussion on A simple to do list I made the following comment. I have since been told that it is probably more appropriate to pursue this in the plugin forum After reading David's post it occurred to me that there's already something that could integrate with UK's Kalender: Jane's plug-in Cr...

Re: A simple to-do list
Updated Knowledgebase content for the major work-arounds Yes, this is what I'm planning to tackle myself first -- the two major approaches: Shared Notes/Named Lists, and then Custom Attributes plus the Research Planner plugin which builds on the Custom Attributes approach. In the process, I'll iden...

Re: A simple to-do list
Mervyn I think that you are right that we do not want to just recreate the "100 best ToDo List application" listings that can be found through any search. People who just want a to do list might be better internet searching. However there may be no harm in pointing out that there are some "agreed sa...

I'm watching quietly and taking notes! And may ask for contributions to the updated Knowledgebase article on the topic when I can dig a couple of days free from the mountain of other stuff. Re: A simple to-do list
After reading David's post it occurred to me that there's already something that could integrate with UK's Kalender: Jane's plug-in Create Individual Shortcut , which creates a small .cmd file. After trying this out, I can confirm that it appears to work: linking a reminder to the .cmd file as eith...

Re: A simple to-do list
A bit more digging and I have found Jane T's plug-in Find-Research-Notes! It's not in the plug-in store but is on Jane's blog . It does much of my previous musing (3 posts above) about being able to add a note with a custom tag anywhere and then being able to find it - using the standard FH "find" f...

Re: Entering wife's maiden name and citation in Ancestral Sources
By genealogy convention in FH & AS people are usually identified by their birth name including married women. How you implement the above when you "meet" a woman for the first time as a married woman and may not know here maiden name requires some form of personal convention. I use the convention t...

Re: A simple to-do list
Helen I think I generally agree with your analysis. For a solution to (1) - your ' Simple To-Do List ', a stand alone application or the calendaring function of many email clients may already do what many people want, some of which I have mentioned: ToDo.txt - which being text based integrates into ...

Re: A simple to-do list
David, thank you for your list, but everyone could come up with a variety of similar lists. Unfortunately, they don't really help us specify to FH what we want implemented. That needs a list of features that allow all manner of such lists to managed. You need to re-focus and think of what features ...

list desired features in precedence order, rather than try to define essential and optional features. I am not sure we will get consensus on this - possibly falling back on trying to design the solution rather than think about the range of user requirements. My pennyworth of the range of things tha...

Re: Matching data from different censuses
My instinct is to not put multiple individuals on a single row, but split them across multiple rows as this permits more useful sorting and filtering (e.g by individual, by year, by address, by Head of Household). It also allows you to add BMD records for the individual who "owns" the row. So your h...

Re: A simple to-do list
Can I complicate things? Do we want this as a feature of FH or do we want a "to do list" which can integrate with FH (like AS?) either as a new application (like AS) or by integrating an existing application? For instance I have been looking at the wiki software Zim and its add-in task-list The tool...

Re: underscore character or hyphen?
One of the problems with Underscores is that if they get incorporated in_a_link, the underlining of the link can obscure the underscore making it look like a space.
I find a tilde (~) is a useful separator or substitute character (for instance in filenames where you cannot use /,\,|,: etc.!)

Re: Matching data from different censuses
Mike/Mike Is this an FH question of more one of "family reconstruction"? FH is great for recording, but I do find it sometimes difficult for analysis and synthesis. A spreadsheet is often flexible enough to allow you to use it for family reconstruction, but it is then a pity that you cannot quickly ...

Re: Whole record versus name citations and my Baptism dilemma
Hi Further, if I assume the family were living in the baptism town, should I also assume that, by inference, mother Elizabeth would also be resident at the town, even though she is not listed at all. That would mean linking the mother's residence fact to a source that does not even show her name. I...

Re: Wills Property Box Tab
Garry Firstly, roles and terminology in wills and the granting probate. I have found that in most of the wills I have, the trustee and executor are one and the same. However, not all wills appoint a trustee. Terminology also appears to be adding to the discussion. In some cases, terms are being inte...

Re: Wills Property Box Tab
I guess a lot depends on where you are coming from in terms of tightening up personal practice (particularly after beginning to get to grips with "FHwitnesses"). The key question is how much effort you are prepare to put into reworking Family Trees to make them consistent with your own current conve...

Re: Wills Property Box Tab
With regard to Wills, I think users need to decide what conventions they are going to follow. (Mike may move this to a more appropriate part of the forum!) People can make multiple wills and it is often interesting to follow thorough the changes and see how family dynamics (or members have changed)....

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.
If you access via FreeBMD it is possible to look at the images of the birth indices. In cases like these there are often manuscript explanations (usually a footnote mark, followed by a note at the foot of the page)
