Re: Reinstalling FH
Jane's intervention ("going above and beyond what FHUG does") should offer a solution to your immediate problem. (Most of us I suspect have suffered similar problems because you can never remember what happened years ago when you installed the software!) I address this problem through a feature of m...

Re: Census entry if away from home
I think I am "stretching" towards thinking: Residence is an habitual "fact" - I am a UK resident, I could call my home "my residence", (a bit "grand" for a modest dwelling) Death notices often say "he died 'at his residence'" This is a key bit of information for family historians and distinct from a...

Re: Census entry if away from home
FYI: GEDCOM Standard 5.5 definition says: RESI {RESIDENCE}:= The act of dwelling at an address for a period of time. GEDCOM Draft 5.5.1 definition says: RESI {RESIDENCE}:= An address or place of residence that a family or individual resided. So it is down to interpretation as to how long establishe...

Re: Census entry if away from home
The other thing to remember is that there is an assumption behind, "away from home". Do we actually know he/she was "away from home" and that they were not actually "at home" for some reason - fostered or informally adopted out, major family breakdown, child actually living with their genetic father...

Re: Census entry if away from home
... You may think the family is unrelated to the child, but it may turn out later that there is some relationship, otherwise why is he residing there? It is often worth recording details of the household where "strays" are found at a census. My GGF was a stray in an 1800's census, but it made sense...

Anyone know anyone in the likes of ISOGG? It's not just Universities who produce courses for Future Learn (and similar). Perhaps they might find the platform a useful education tool?

Re: FH on Mac or Unix
This highlights how things like Wine/Cross-over are temporary work-arounds until a native source can be found. They are temporary because we cannot guarantee that they will work with New versions of the OS on which we run them New versions of the software we want to run on them My OS (Linux - Ubuntu...

I first got an offer last April but, being elderly, one never knows for sure how things will be that far ahead. I know the feeling - but it is interesting to note that 25% discounts were available last week; possibly that was always planned or possibly ticket sales have been disappointing? I have n...

Re: Can I produce a copy of a Descendent family tree?
Once you have your tree as described above you can "trim" it by Using the little circle that you see on the line dropping down from the marriage link to the children - clicking on this will hide the children You can also right click on an individual and select "hide" which removes them from the diag...

I have um'ed and ah'ed about going but: London is a hell of a trek from English/Scottish Borders ExCeL is a struggle to get to either by Underground/Docklands Railway with Rucksack(!) or by car (London does not like Cars) It's a multi-day event so either expensive semi-local accommodation or another...

Re: Occupation/Voluntary roles
I am happy to have multiple occupations recorded say at a specific census; so I will record "Blacksmith" as an occupation fact and "Bailiff for County Court" as a separate occupation fact. As long as I am consistent with the spelling of "Blacksmith" / "Black Smith" etc. this allows me to do more use...

although there was Dorothy Walters who married 4 times between 1807 and 1828 and outlived all 4 husbands and all 4 of her children. My Great Great Great Grandmother married twice (legally: married, widowed, married) to identically named men - who appear to be unrelated! Talk about repeat purchases!

Re: Born out of wedlock
FYI: GEDCOM does not assume that if there were children there was a marriage. All it defines is a Family record with optional links to a Husband , a Wife , and unlimited Children . It is valid to have single parent or no parent families, and no Marriage Event is implied. That is why "couples" is an...

Isn't a "cougar/toyboy" relationship status somewhat sexist and unidirectional Mary Ann to Charles  i.e. He is her "toyboy". Re: Born out of wedlock
I strongly suspect I need a "cougar/toyboy" relationship status... Joking aside, is the "family" (relationship) entity the problem rather than any need to guess at some form of judgemental status? This is I think structural to GEDCOM - probably a legacy of its origins. We know and can record ...

Re: Born out of wedlock
The unmarried couple have no Marriage Event and thus no Marriage Event Date so the only order is that determined by the Spouse tabs, unless a custom Family Event such as Liaison (or Fling ) is entered with a Date . FH does not classify such relationships as marriages as evidenced by the Narrative R...

Re: Born out of wedlock
One complication is that the James & Jean 'fling' can only be entered on the Spouse tab before or after the James & Margaret marriage and not during. That may affect the way the details in Reports are produced. Doesn't that come back to what is the meaning of the Marriage.Date field? Is it the "Sta...
