Re: Reasearch Notes - How do I use them?
I noticed that only Shared Notes appear in the Notes tab of the Records Window . Does this mean it might be best practise to use only Shared Notes? May I correct some misunderstandings? ... All local Notes do appear in the Notes tab. [of the Individual Property Box] (my italics / [insertion] in bot...

Re: Names and Name Changes over time
I was only pointing out that conceptually what I had in mind was possible given the previous use of the _ASID tag. Since it is "under the hood" it does not really matter what it is called until there is an official GEDCOM implementation. I was highlighting it because someone may raise an objection t...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Name Selection with Patronymics One of the Issues that seems to arise when discussing Patronymics and similar (e.g. Spanish "compound partial-patronymic/partial-matronymic names) is what "belongs between the slashes" which has an impact on FH sorting, but also on Selecting using the Filter boxes fo...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Actually, the correct correct tag is: NATIONAL_OR_TRIBAL_ORIGIN:= {Size=1:120} The person's division of national origin or other folk, house, kindred, lineage, or tribal interest. Examples: Irish, Swede, Egyptian Coptic, Sioux Dakota Rosebud, Apache Chiricawa, Navajo Bitter Water, Eastern Cherokee ...

Re: Names and Name Changes over time
That seems like a pragmatic way forward, but I can't actually find an existing wish list for Dated Names (may be a limitation of my use of search). I have therefore raised a wish list request for: 1) Implementation of %INDI.NAME[1]._DATE% in a similar manner to %INDI.TITL[1].DATE% 2) Ability to asso...

Dating and Usage of Names and Alternate Names
Where individuals are known by different names at different times, there is a need to be able to record effectivity dates of the alternative names. Additionally it would be useful to be able to associate specific alternative names with specific facts. (This arose from the thread Names and Name Chang...

Re: Query to get just one line back
This devil is going to continue to "advocate" on two grounds: 1) When Ahnentafel numbers were developed (16th century?) adoptions and non-paternity events were not unknown but they were private and often unacknowledged and people's "claimed pedigrees" would often/usually not acknowledge them. The "d...

Re: Query to get just one line back
In that case, the current Ahnentafel number generation algorithm, based purely on the parent hierarchy, has no way of recognising and excluding these non-direct line relationships. Possibly playing devil's advocate: Can anyone quote an authority for Ahnentafel Numbers that says the "Ancestor Table"...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
If GEDCOM included a “clan” relationship identity (like my names db) I would use that to keep them connected as a “family” over the years and generations of individuals which starts in the mid 1700’s thru today. Well it has: CASTE_NAME:= {Size=1:90} A name assigned to a particular group that this p...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Before the modern period (see above), prepositions such as de, de’, degli, dei and de li were not usually part of the surname, so Lorenzo de’ Medici is indexed as Medici, Lorenzo de’. Philosophically, I find that I have a problem with this sort of statement, which is "How do they know?" Did Lorenzo...

What do you call those charts where the bottom families have their children arranged in a vertical list?
This would at the cost of vertical scrolling reduce horizontal scrolling

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Indexing in GEDCOM is a known issue (from a database standpoint) because the things we would normally index by, (SURN, GIVN) are optional tags. In many cases we are left with just the NAME tag and other than surname (documented in NAME with a set of “/“ marks), we may not have good access to indexa...

Re: Any way to reduce horizontal scrolling on descendant chart?
It may be worth looking at Saved Diagrams - which do save a layout. If you are prepared to break the alignment of generations, you can use a "box and bar" move (the icon top right with four arrows at 90º to each other) to drag the "prolific parents" off-spring line down to a bit of clear space and a...

Re: Resolving multiple duplicate media.
Welcome to FHUG Can I just clarify, are you talking about duplicate media files (i.e. jpegs etc.) or duplicate media records in FH. The latter are like index cards for the actual files. (Duplicate files will be recognisable by filename(1).jpeg, filename(2).jpeg etc.) If a media record is not linked ...

Re: Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Italian Patronymics I think the term “name” can only refer to a given name as in this case and other cases in history. A prime example is “ Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci”, where his only “name” is Leonardo and the rest just helps to identify the individual within the community. So rather than sayi...

Re: Data reference for witness
A challenge can be that not every person has a patronymic (and then no name will be returned if I understand right) - and many people do have two given names plus patronymic plus farm name. A suggestion for development could be to establish a qualifier "surname1", defined as the first of surnames. ...

Patronymics (& Matronymics/metronymics)
Re Norwegian Patronymics I was not aware of the "middle" qualifier. [(The MIDDLE qualifier returns all except the 1st given name and /surname/ part from NAME so multiple given names would break the use of MIDDLE as a patronymic extractor)] I will check out if that can help me some way. A challenge ...

I was a TMG user earlier. The solution in that product was as I see it quit good. For every fact you could choose which name variant you wanted to connect it to. This name variant would then be used in the narratives. If no name variant was chosen the primary name would be used. That solved "all" m...

I just wanted to point out that despite the shortcomings of the FS Global Tree, the FS website is a valuable source for digital records. Do I also detect some antagonism towards Family Search because of its Mormon origins? Is that logical or more emotional? I'm not a Mormon, nor even close. Re: FamilySearch Id
I would have to say that my experiences with the reliability of data in the FSFT is that I would under no circumstance want it anywhere near my own family tree - so many errors!. This has nothing to do with my being a FH user, just plain common sense. I too am wary of crowdsourcing one's genealogy....

Re: Given names and Surnames
John, I assume you are referring to Given and Surname , or similar unwanted sub-fields. Create a Query to list all such sub-fields. You can then select the appropriate Result Set column of cells and delete them. If you are coming at this from a non "First-names/Last-name/" environment (e.g. Vincent...
