Perhaps if we were all willing to pay a little more, Simon Orde would have more of an incentive to devote more time to respond to our criticisms. I don't have money to throw away but I do think the present price is ridiculously low for a piece of software that does so much for us, whatever its prese...

What operating system are you using, goodwin2? I'm still on Win98, with Firefox 2 browser and I can't see a dropdown either. My page does look like Chris' screenshot but below 'Last Vote' all I've got is a black stripe with a 'Return to List' link underneath it. No part of the black stripe is clicka...

Many thanks, PeterR. Most of my family photos are in LZW-TIFF format and when I first started with FH3 (which didn't support LZW) I had to convert a lot of them. As yet I haven't taken the plunge with V4 but when I do, it's good to know that I won't have that problem any more. Thanks again for takin...

Can anyone please tell me whether V4 now supports LZW-compressed Tiffs?

Hull is the clue here. Your relative would have worked for Reckitts, who made the famous 'Dolly Blue' that was extensively used in laundry at that time. There were various types of 'blue' but, being a domestic product, Dolly Blue was by far the most well known. See: http://www.oldandinteresting.com/...

Date and Ages? (largish image files)
I am quite prepared to accept that the older William in the second photo is the same man as the William in the first. The older man's nose seems to have been broken at some time and its somewhat pendulous appearance is not necessarily inconsistent with that of the younger man's. Old men's ears often...

Date and Ages? (largish image files)
I would guess between 1900 and 1915. Mum and Dad are probably early to mid-30s, Grandma is early- to mid-50s and the boy is about 3. It does seem that people in those days looked older than their modern counterparts of the same age. Dressing boy toddlers in what we might regard as girls' clothes see...

And the same to you, Jane - together with a huge thank you, on behalf of everyone, for all that you do for us.

Bryn - Now I'm not sure whether you want to send the relative your data in a form that can be read into genealogy program like FH, Brothers Keeper, Generations, etc., or whether you want to send it merely in a form that your relative can access on a computer using some other software (otherwise, yo...

Bryn - When you say 'a copy of my tree', do you mean the diagram (picture) of your family tree or do you mean the database that holds all the information? If it's the database (and if I'm not stating the obvious), just use any burning software to create a CD of the Gedcom file that you use FH to mai...

Margins on printed output
I have searched the website quite hard for information on adjusting the margins when printing the result set from a query but have come up with very little. There was something vaguely related way back in 2004 but I presume that is out of date. There was one inquiry and a reply from Jane in May 2007...

GedCom Census - scroll wheel support
This is one for Nick; apologies if it has come up before but I couldn't find it. How easy would it be to implement mouse scroll-wheel support in the 'All individuals' list in the main window? I'd be interested to know if anyone else would find this helpful. Perhaps the larger the list the less usefu...

Have you considered the possibility that the uniform in the second picture might not be a military one? Postal service or public transport, for example. The style of the collar and tie, in particular, doesn't look very military to me.

Click OK and the whole lot disappears. Have shut down and restarted but the same thing happens. Help, Chris, please.

Date Generated for Diagrams
Many thanks to Jane and Jon. I didn't want to start an argument but it does go to show how valuable FHUG is to we mere mortals. Long may it continue. For those who may use this facility, be aware that the maximum number of characters that the HEAD.NOTE2 data reference will display on the diagram i...

Date Generated for Diagrams
Thanks very much Jane. Where would we all be without you?! One further query, if I may: in the example you gave in your previous post you separated the three items with a line space, which you then show as converting in the diagram to plain text, again with a line space between the three items. Whe...

This is a useful little facility but so far I have failed to find where it picks up the HEAD.NOTE2 text from. Without my entering that text somewhere, all I get in the text box in the diagram is 'From HEAD.NOTE2' (i.e. just the percent symbols are missing). I have found the file's header record (abo...

I have just one PDF file in my multimedia collection, so I tried to replicate the problem described by gladtobegrey. My father was a butcher, which was a reserved occupation - at least it was at the start of the war. I should imagine that any occupation connected with feeding the country was also reserved. As the war progressed, however, my father's occupation became gradually less reserved, as it were. At first...

Probate
Every time I enter a probate date I get the message 'Entered date is later than the individual's date of burial. Is this intended?' Well, yes it is, for the reason given below. Also, the text wording for a probate event is 'He had his estate probated on (date)'. To me, probate has always meant t...
