Place names inverted

Thanks so much, Jane. Problem solved. What a relief! I really didn't want to have to reinput thousands of places!

Place names inverted

In place names (married in, for example) the text is upside down.  This is a recent development.  It happens with all gedcom files, so it isn't the ged file. If I outline the text with the mouse it is the right way up, but when I click somewhere else it reverts.  If I delete the place and reinsert, ...

Demo/Free Trial of Family Historian

When I was deciding what genealogy software to buy I looked at Demo/Trial versions. I'm not completely sure, but I think at the time there was either a demo or a free trial of Family Historian available. (I bought Family Historian.) As far as I can see the demo/free trial is no longer available. Is ...

Putting filename into a query or report

Is there any way to insert the name of the file into a query or report, for example as a 'Special Code' in a subtitle? It would be nice to have this, so that if one was working with several files with the same query, the name of the file printed in the output.  At present I have to write the name of...

Probable/possible spouse

The query 'Probable Spouse' refers to 'Jane's excellent tutorial'. I have tried, but failed, to locate this tutorial. Could anyone tell me where it is, and, just as important, tell me how I might have found it!

Thanks

Web page trees

Will it be possible to save tree diagrams directly as html pages in FH3? I haven't so far wanted to make html pages of trees, so have not investigated the free programs. If it will be possible in FH3, I'll wait, rather than learn a new program.

Printing out column pane in a query

Is there any way to print out, for example, a column pane of a query? This is useful is one wants to create a new query with many of the entries in other queries. If it's only a minor change from one query it's easy (base it on the old query), but if the entries are from several queries, things are ...

Others 'stealing' my data

And in any case, what is really important is to make your computer secure: firewall, antivirus, keep your virus data and patches up-to-date, don't run operating systems that are not being maintained (which means if it's Windows for choice stick to Windows 2000 or, preferably, XP).  From June 30 2006...

Counting male and female children

Thanks, Jane.  I have been doing it, as you suggest, in an Excel spreadsheet, but it's a tedious business!  We get used to FH being able to anything  we throw at it that it that it comes as a bit of a shock to find that there are some things it can't do.  Any chance of this going on the wish list?  ...

Counting male and female children

Is there a way to count male and female children separately in a query. I have tried modifying the standard 'Count children (per family)' query, but can't get anything to work.

Thanks

Text schemes on two computers

Thanks.  Yes, that's how I transferred the queries, etc.  There was a text Scheme file, and I transferred it, but it didn't produce the same result.  When I typed in the settings manually, it did.  Odd. Don't think I want to start editing the Registry every time I want to do this!  Not a major probl...

Text schemes on two computers

I have Family Historian and my ged files on two computers: a desktop I use at home and a laptop I take to Record Offices. I can copy the custom queries, reports, etc., from the desktop to the laptop (as well as the latest versions of the ged files), to ensure that I have the most up-to-date version,...

I'm not quite sure what it is you want to do.  Do you want to create a list of all of the decendants that carry the name 'Smith', for example?  If so, you can create a custom query from the Descendants standard query, and create a line, in Rows Exclude unless %INDI.NAME:SURNAME% matches ['Surname'] ...

Getting a 'note' into a query

Hello Richard,

Many thanks.  That did the trick, and I think I am beginning to understand how the hierachy of fields is organized.

Getting a 'note' into a query

Thanks.  The 'note' I want to insert into a query is at the bottom on the right.  I would also like to know how to work out which 'note' or other field is the right one to insert.

Getting a 'note' into a query

I am now using custom queries extensively to sort out what data I am missing, and what needs to be done, but I've been beaten by one item I want to get into a query.  In Individual Properties, on the 'Sources for', at the bottom there is a note field, which I want to get into a query.  The trouble i...

Format of dates in Excel from a report

Thanks very much for both of these replies.  I realise that I haven't discovered this feature of Excel before because I've only ever used pre-1900 years alone, as a number, not a full date!  In fact, as all I want to do is create a checklist, one column with the year as number (for sorting) and anot...

Format of dates in Excel from a report

Shortly after posting this, I realised that the pre-1900 dates are appearing in Excel as text, and not as dates, so I imagine this is a feature of Excel, and not FH.  However, if anyone knows how to get round this, I'd like to hear!  It will make sorting a bit of a problem!

Format of dates in Excel from a report

When I paste the Results set from a  query into an Excel sheet, although the dates in the FH query results set always appear in the form 6 Dec 1872, sometimes the date appears in Excel as 6 Dec 1872, but post-1900 dates, with exactly the same format (for example 6 Dec 1905) in the query results set,...

Organization of notes

I see that word processing features (bold, italic, etc.) for Notes is on the wish list, and I've just voted for it. My notes on individuals are beginning to get a bit disorganised, as I add notes about things I have found out or plan to do, and I need to re-organise them to bring all the information...

Deleting place from place list

As a newcomer I find I have several variants of a place in the place list, as a result of typing something different each time.  I can edit them, but not delete them.  Is it possible to delete a place?  If I can, what happens to a place in an individual record?

Thanks.  That's exactly what the situation was.  Not sure, however, how I managed to achieve this situation, as I thought I always clicked on the 'Delete citation' button to unlink from the source.  Have tested a dummy, and see that clicking on 'Delete citation' does indeed remove the citation as se...
