Re: Photo Editing Software

I've been using Photoshop Elements for many years and find it does everything I need to do. I recently took advantage of a special offer to upgrade to Photoshop Elements 2022 which allows me to colorise old photos.

Re: Looking for archival storage boxes

I bought a lot of Bigso acid-free photo boxes from the Holding Company to store family photos and I've been very happy with them: https://www.theholdingcompany.co.uk/brands/bigso/photo-box.html The Holding Company also sell larger document boxes. They are not acid free but they were fine for my purp...

Re: Stopping the display of text from source

I right clicked in the empty space to the right of my list of sources. That brought up a submenu showing new sources, columns and options. Clicking options brought up the Preferences window. I then went to sources and then clicked on generic source formats. I could have got there by going to Tools/P...

Re: Stopping the display of text from source

Many thanks. I got there in the end. The setting in the preferences also had to be changed to stop the text from source appearing. I found that I could access the submenu from the sources tab by right-clicking on the page. This is what the successful settings now look like.

Stopping the display of text from source

I'm trying to produce a narrative report. I use the generic source system and for many sources (eg, GRO indexes, FreeBMD) I include the text from source for my own benefit. However, I don't want this information to appear in my reports because it means that the source (eg, GRO indexes) is repeated m...

Hi Mike

I hadn't realised that. That's a very useful tip. Many thanks.

Re: Problems with text from source

Thanks Lorna. I've now managed to get the citation-specific text from source box in the citation pane so it's now just one additional click to get there. I tried putting the source box at the bottom but I like to be able to see the spouse and all the children in the property box so there's no room l...

Problems with text from source

I'm now using Family Historian 7 and am trying to grapple with the updated sources. I previously made extensive use of FreeBMD as a source and I used to type the text from the FreeBMD entry in the citation-specific "text from source" box which was always accessible from the main source pane. Text fr...

Re: Backup and Restore for V7

Thanks. I've seen that but I didn't understand a lot of it, especially the business about tabs. I've managed to restore my settings manually so that I can see all the baptisms, burials and marriages which were the main things I was missing. I will wait until tomorrow to try and understand what has h...

Re: Backup and Restore for V7

Many thanks. I think I've finally got it sorted. I was eventually able to install V6 (luckily we have an external hard drive). I was then able to install the downloaded V7. All my custom facts are there along with all my saved preferences but I'm still struggling to sort out the Property Box. Using ...

Re: Backup and Restore for V7

I am going round and round in circles. I tried installing from the CDs but the back up and restore plug in wouldn't work because I didn't have the updated version of FH6 and I couldn't find it on the website. I uninstalled FH6 and though I would try the download but I can't get a download without ha...

Re: Backup and Restore for V7

Mike

Yes I have customised the records window and columns. I'm not planning to use the old laptop as it's on its last legs. It looks like reinstalling V6 is the only solution. Thanks for the tip about the free download. That will certainly be easier than going through the multiple upgrade CDs.

Re: Backup and Restore for V7

Thanks everyone for the responses. Rather than going through the process of installing FH6 all over again I'm wondering if I can just copy over my custom files given that I don't have that many. The relevant files are all in the program data file (eg, facts, property box and diagrams). The other imp...

Re: Backup and Restore for V7

I've just downloaded Family Historian V7 and I'm trying to use the Backup and Restore plug in to restore my settings. I have FH V6 on my old laptop and I used the V6 Plugin to back up the settings. I downloaded the V7 Plugin on my new laptop. When I try and restore the settings I keep getting error ...

Joan

I'm glad you enjoyed my talk. I haven't actually taken the Pharos course myself but I know many people who have and it is highly recommended. I think you will enjoy it.

Re: One Name Studies

I use Family Historian for my one-name study as do a lot of other Guild members. I've never seen any need to use Custodian or Clooz. I do maintain spreadsheets for things like my BMD extractions (England and Wales 1837-2005). Wherever possible I now add family groups direct to Family Historian even ...

Custom Tree Splitter

Thanks for this tip. It looked daunting at first but I followed the instructions and it worked really well. I successfully managed to split off a tree, and the whole process only took about five minutes.

Maiden name in family events in narrative reports

Further to the discussion on the user group I propose that the following item be added to the wish list: 'Allow sentence templates to accept data expressions and functions' I understand that this feature would allow sentences to be altered in family events. Currently the woman's maiden name is given...
